“Never Stay Here: Stay Away”
Reviewed October 15, 2008

This Villa was an absolute nightmare. We booked it over the phone from Crete and only going by the photos looked relatively decent. The owner was sketchy right from the port, picking us up in an unmarked van with no signs on the side or anything at all. Being two 21 year old female travellers, things like that set off bells in your head. To top it off, he was pressing us at (1am when we arrived) about the length of our stay and why we were only staying one night. Upon arriving at the hostel, he walked us up to our room, came into the room and shut the door. WEIRD. Told us that we were required to be at the reception at 10am to tell him our travel plans. The next morning, he knocked at our door at 920am and while we were getting ready to leave (packing our bags and stuff). When we told him we would be a few minutes he waited at our door for us. When we told him we were leaving he asked where we thought we were going and we said that we were going to find accomodation closer to fira. He told us it was impossible and that if we were smart we would just stay with him because he wasnt sure if he was gonna have any room by the afternoon (we were sure we were the only ones staying in the villa). So he gave us our passport we gave him our money and headed down to the bus stop to go to fira. While waiting at the bus stop, he pulled up in his sketchy green van accusing us of stealing his douvet blanket. We are travelling with backpacks that arent even big enough to put a sleeping bag in and plus we have sleeping bags attached to our bags. After I told him we didnt have his blanket, he demanded that we come back to the hotel and find it. We obv refused and he drove off. He came back 3 more times telling us that we owed him money and that we stole from him and when we refused (still sitting at the same bus stop) he sat in his car and stared at me for 5 minutes. Saying nothing, just glaring at me. I not so nicely told him off and he left. Worst experience of my life with a hotel. If you are even considering this place, dont. Its secluded, theres nothing around, he barely speaks english, the rooms are small and the surrounding area is bleek. Stay at Villa Manos in Fira.

this is by far the worst place I have stayed in after being in europe for 2 months. we booked online because of the pictures and the conviencence of the owner picking us up at the ferry port but it was a bad choice on my part. Michael (the owner) came and picked us up in time and everything seems like it was going to be well, he showed us to our room which was nothing more than mediocre and he left the room telling us to be down in reception at 10am. myself and one other girl were getting our bags ready at 920am and he was already banging at the door for us to leave and stayed outside the door until we were ready to leave. we payed and told him after one night of staying at his villa we would find other accomadations and he seemed to be offended. We walked down to the bus stop and 10 minutes later he came driving to us accusing us of stealing blankets off the bed. (had an visible sleeping bags attached to our BACKPACKS) we told him he was wrong and he would not leave telling us we had to go back to the villa with him after i told him he ccould look in my backpack if he wanted.

horrible place to stay!

We decided to book this hostel because of the wonderful reviews it had received on other sites. Everyone raved about the owner and how nice he was. Unfortunately, we decided to stay there at the worst possible time. We were there for four nights, and the owner was out of town the entire time. He left his mother in charge, but she was incompetent, didn't speak any english, and couldn't even understand that we wanted to check out early.
The place was cute and a good location, but there were several other hostels viewable from our balcony that we would suggest over Villa Marvalia, including Villa Dimitris. Many others also have pools, which would have been a plus.

After arriving on the ferry from Athens, we had been promised a ride to the hostel, instead we were left to deal with a group of screaming taxi drivers all offering to take us there for a fee or telling us that our hostel was not there. After about 30 minutes, a man with a sign for another hostel came up to us and told us he would take us to Marvalia. The entire situation was very sketchy, but eventually we agreed. In the van with us was another couple from the States and one from Asia. We watched as our driver practically robbed the Asian couple, tossed their bags out of the van, and left them on the side of the street 10 km from their hotel , telling them to take a bus to the capital city (Fira).

After we were dropped off, we were left to deal with the owner's mother, who spoke no English and just showed us to our room, although it was not the room we requested (she did not understand this, so we couldn't change). To make matters worse, our toilet did not flush, and again we were unable to explain this to her. After a few nights we tried to leave, because the lack of plumbing had really taken its toll on us, and she did not understand, and wouldn't give us back our passports. We had to use bars as bathrooms for five days.

A few other problems included: stained sheets (what, no bleach?), broken ceiling fan, NOT a bed and breakfast (as advertised), and a power outage on the last day (which forced me to brush my teeth in a grocery store bathroom).

All and all, the island of Santorini is beautiful and most people there are incredibly nice. Unfortunately for us, all the fates collided and left us in an uncomfortable situation. While that probably wouldn't happen to most, its good to know that if it does, the people the owner leaves in charge are incompetent. should probably stay somewhere else, there are TONS of hostels on the Perrisa beach side to pick from.
