“a good stay in Santorini”
Reviewed October 3, 2012

This hotel has a good location. It's in Firostefani, 10 mins walk on a very beautiful lane on the caldera to Fira. The whole area is nice. The hotel is with good price. However, I find the breakfast quite simple and we had to eat inside instead of eating in a balcony like in a few hotels around. The receptionist was friendly and the woman who served breakfast gave us a cold bottle of water when we came back to take our luggage to go to Athens.

Just left there after three great days with my fiance. The rooms were spacious, clean and comfortable ( although some of the ceilings were lower then usual)

Worth mentioning is the cleanliness. Im a neat freak and found this room to be well above my standard.

Athenasia was a lovely and cheerful host who really went out of her way to help us, even before we arrived answering our emails promptly.

The view of the caldera is stunning especially from the top rooms balconies. Also of note is the breakfasts which are provided and were delicious.

If we ever make it back to Santorini or anyone asks for a reccomendation it will definately be agnadema from us.

We went as 50-year old Mum + Dad + 17 year old son in Aug 2012.

The majority of (non farm-land) Santorini is on the cusp of what remains of a volcano. So EVERYWHERE is a climb up or down. It’s full of little villas clinging to the mountainside and extra living space won through burrowing into the mountainside. There are two sides to the island, the outer which looks out across the Mediterranean and the (much more expensive) inner which looks over the caldera with its islands. Agnadema Apartments are on the inside.

My God, what a view. Our best to date was Bay of Naples at sunset. This beats it hands down.

Agnadema villas is 9 apartments, 2 with a separate bedroom + the rest studio style (most of which have “loft bedrooms” but still open to the living area). The 2 separate apartment rooms are large. It’s ideal for couples (there is no privacy; even the 2 apartments with a separate bedroom isn’t well insulated and access to the bathroom is through the bedroom anyway). The apartments are spotless – those with even the most extreme cleanliness OCD will be OK here! Rooms are cleaned every day and beds changed every 2-3 days. The pool is perfect (not heated but if you’re here in summer, that’s a relief). The staff are so very helpful (really sweet) with good English. In our two week stay, our neighbours were mainly Aus (actually quite of lot of Aussies all over the place) and English.

The apartments are in a village called Firostephani. It has a little square which is where the taxi/bus will drop you off. It’s then 80 serious steps down to the hotel (tip – call the hotel from the top and they will send someone up (at their expense) to collect your bags). There are 5 restaurants within 2 min walk (once you’ve survived the climb back up!). The rooms have good a/c (I suspect having 90% of it tunnelled into the cool mountainside helps!), the WiFi works (God knows how), although English TV is rubbish (grainy BBC World News channel only). Breakfast is served in the reception area which was fine (omelette, breads, cereals, fruit, cake, coffee, OJ etc). This is important as there’re no cooking facilities (just a fridge), so lunch is an additional meal out (we ran out of non-cooking cold lunch ideas after the first week). And if you’re over 5’10” high, watch the door heights – I’m 6’2”, so seriously brained myself twice (and the stone lintels have less give than my scalp – which appeared to surprise my wife).

The capital Fera (aka Thera) is either a 15 minute walk along a footpath (which feeds all the apartments along the mountain edge) or a local bus from the square (5 mins). There’re plenty of restaurants, shops, banks etc in Fera.

Transport: We were nicely accosted outside the airport on arrival and jumped into a fancy mini bus that dropped us off at our hotel. 20Euros which is also what the hotel set our expectations (20 min drive). Thereafter, taxis are around 7 Euros or the bus is 1.60 pp into Fera. However the buses are chaotic – totally ignore the time-table, they run approximately every 20 mins, but then they are often full (packed, heaving) and so don’t stop anyway. There is a taxi rank in Fera, but they decide where they want to go and will quiz the queue and design their route to their liking. Because Firostephani is only 5 mins away, it isn’t lucrative (e.g. Vs airport runs) and you can be left there for an hour. In the end we resorted to catching whichever came first (taxi or bus) into Fera and the bus back - as Fera is a terminus, you always get on. Bus stops for both directions are right outside the square.

Santorini: is uber-expensive. A meal out for 3 (half bottle of wine + 1 beer, 2 starters, 3 main) is £75-90 Euros. It’s a major destination for the cruise ships (which only sustains the costs) and of course, every time one arrives and spews its 1,500 inmates on-shore, they then run as a tsunami through the narrow streets with their tour leaders barging their way through, ruining it for everyone else.

Food is very Greek and very good. In short, it’s an upmarket island, so make sure you have the budget.

Tourist sights are a little limited. TripAdvisor lists 7 “must see”. When these include beaches, views and walks, you get the sense there’s not much to see. However there were 2 trips we felt worth considering:
1. Boat trip to the neighbouring island (volcano core), then to another for hot springs and to third to visit a village, then back home. Around 40Euro each. We skipped this given it looked like more uphill walking(!!).
2. Akrotiri excavations. Similar to Herculaneum + Pompeii. No bodies (they all fled in time) but well advanced (3 story houses etc). The whole site only reopened in July this year (umm… scaffolding fell down and killed a tourist a couple of years ago). But wow – proper job done. Whole thing is under-cover so cool. You walk around on gangways looking down and into some beautifully restored houses. Definitely worth visit (we got a 33Euro trip per person through the hotel. Two tips: Visit with guide as the descriptions of what you’re looking at on site are poor. And go see the artefacts in the museum in Fera first (gives a perspective).

Oh – and there are NO mosquitos, not a bite - given my wife’s pheromones are normally the equivalent of the finest Caviar for mossys, this was a serious blessing.

Overall: Beautiful place, charming, cared for and clean. But expensive, steps everywhere and not that much to see/visit. If you’re a no-kids-with-you couple, happy to sunbathe + eat and a good budget, this is definitely for you. If you’re middle-aged like us that love to explore and a bored teenager in tow, then probably not.

We stayed here with our large family of seven in July 2012 and really enjoyed it. The large rooms are so unusual and cool, and are kept meticulously clean. The girls on the front desk are really helpful and the view is stunning. A great position, just be prepared for the steps down (and up) to the hotel. But that's part of the charm of Santorini!

My girlfriend and I stayed at Agnadema Apartments for two nights. The room was clean, comfortable and a great size. Our room opened out to the pool area and the the front door looked out to the Caldera. Buffet breakfast was included. Staff were friendly and helpful. Be prepared to haul your luggage down from the road and back up again. It's quite a steep set of stairs, but we managed fine. The hotel itself is in Firostefani which is about a 10 minute walk to Thira. THis was good as it was much quieter than in Thira. Overall a lovely stay in a beautiful location.

As it was our first visit to Greece, we were quite apprehensive as there were too many stories in the news about the Greek debt crisis and we were worried about the safety aspects. However all these fears were washed away the minute we step foot at Agnadema Apts at Santorini.

This is the most picturesque place we have been to and I must say I really like our family room facing the caldera. You don't have to go to Oia for expensive sunset dinners but you can stay in the comfort of this apartment to watch the sun go down before heading out for dinner. The sunset was amazing as we sat outside our apartment.

We also received friendly service with a decent spread of food for breakfast. Though the steps at this apartment can be a hindrance to some, however, it was not really that bad. My mum who was aged 75 had no problem climbing the steps. However, I would recommend to pay the porter that came around to carry your luggage up the stairs when you depart. It cost around 5 Euros per piece of luggage and I think it was money worth spending to save your back!

Overall, I hope more people will visit Greece and not be put off by the "horror" stories in the news. Life still goes on as usual in Greece and I think they need all the help from tourists to boost their economy. One local told us that their tourist numbers have dropped 40% and it is such a shame especially the so called "perceived" danger is really non-existent. Greece is a really nice place with helpful people (especially so at the islands) and great food.

Yes as everyone will say the view form this place is amazing its true!!!It was very easy to spend 4 days here by the pool gazing out to sea and there was no need to go anywhere else to watch the sunset. There are many negative reviews about the stairs but it wasn't nearly as bad as i was expecting - no more than 3 minutes up the hill to restaurants, convenience stores and the bus stop. I would very much recommend to stay in Firostefani as it is only a short walk to Fira and is much quieter, less tourists and has everything you need.Breakfast was good and plentiful and the staff were extremely friendly and helpful
