“The view is phenomenal!”
Reviewed June 11, 2011

We booked the romantic suite with a balcony, and ended up staying the in the "Mykonos" room on the top floor. The view from this room is simply AMAZING. The pictures attached are from there and speak for themselves. The bed was extremely comfortable, the room plenty big, and the balcony fantastic with a sunset view (no need to go to Oia). The room was so nice, we actually decided NOT to do the red sand beach or the volcano cruise simply because with a room this nice, why bother going all the way across the island to relax? A bottle of wine, some tirokafteri and crackers, and a couple olives and there is little reason to leave.

Dennis in the office was great and offered up some recommendations for places to eat that were pretty good. The hotel itself is located a modest walk away from Fira (10-15 minutes by foot, which can feel a little longer when the sun is on you) and there are a couple good restaurants and corner stores within 5 minutes from the hotel. There's also a bus stop about 5-7 minutes from the hotel which will take you out to Oia or back to the main station in Fira. The 20 euro hotel transfer from the port is an ok deal. By transit, it will cost you about 5 euro per person and you'll have to lug stuff. It's easily doable, 20 is a reasonable enough price for multiple people.

My only word of warning is that this is not a good place for people who are mobility impaired: The hotel is down about 30 feet of steps and then it's more steps to go back up. If you're in a wheelchair or have difficulty with stairs, you might, unfortunately, have to consider somewhere else.

We are just back from a long weekend in spectacular Santorini and, without doubt, our stay at Blue Dolphins was one of the high points of the holiday. It is located at Firostefani, just a few minutes’ walk from the lively centre of Fira. Every part of the hotel is spotlessly clean, its rooms are light and spacious and its breakfast terrace (where one could be tempted to spend the whole day!) has the most amazing view of the caldera. Some of the rooms have private balconies - the view from the one above the breakfast terrace is even better than that from the terrace. Just a few steps lower, the apartment for four used to be a traditional cave house; though it does not offer a view of the caldera, it does have its own private courtyard, which could be a bonus for a family with children.

The hotel is easily accessed by car, something that is not always the case with hotels on the caldera, and we were always able to park just outside the hotel entrance. Its slightly ‘off-centre’ location means that Blue Dolphins offers peace and quiet, though a number of eating and drinking spots are just a short walk away.

The breakfast buffet, which includes excellent coffee, cereals, different kinds of bread, freshly squeezed orange juice, eggs, cheese and ham and – not to be missed! – the owner’s mother’s homemade jams, is constantly refreshed through the 2½ hour breakfast time.

But even more important than all of the above is the truly friendly and hospitable attitude of everyone working at Blue Dolphins. While clearly highly professional, they make you feel as though you are staying at a friend’s house and nothing we asked for was too much trouble. We were offered a map of the island and a printed list of suggested restaurants, bars, beaches, places of interest, etc. Moreover, Alexis (the owner) took the time to find out what sort of holiday we were after and highlighted the ones that were most appropriate for us - he was always spot on! Dionysis and the two ladies looking after the rooms and the breakfast buffet could not have been more charming and accommodating, all of them with a ready smile. Why couldn’t more hotels be like that?

We stayed at Blue Dolphins for 3 days during May 2011. We really had the feeling that the owners had spent a good amount of time and effort to understand what a traveller really needs and provide you with it. The rooms were clean and tidy and full with all equipment someone needs in vacations, the owners and stuff were very polite and helpfull, always ready to give advice and ideas to have a good time, breakfast was excellent and the location and the view just breathtaking! Plus it is not expensive. I will recomend it to all of my friends!

if you want a place to go where you instantly forget where you came from and where you'll go back to, somewhere that is unlike anywhere else, and where the view is so breath taking that you feel floating in it, this is the place to be!!!
I am not talking about just a romantic place but somewhere that even my 8 and 10 years old children felt blissful. Not even Disneyland had this affect on them.
We stayed at a villa where grownups and kids can have privacy, which means that we were able to combine family and couple's vacation.
Absolutely worth the money!

We stayed at three different properties during the lead up and a few days after our wedding last September. We chose the honeymoon suite for the night before and after the big day.

If you've looked at other honeymoon suites with a caldera view, you'll know how insane they are. We were not in a position to pay upwards of 400 a night! The Blue Dolphins was lovely, small patio overlooking the caldera (or just look out from bed when lazy!) and a lovely jacuzzi.

The champagne as a congratulations was a nice touch.

My sister and boyfriend stayed in the same hotel after we'd left booked in a standard double and were upgraded to the honeymoon suite, very nice!

We didn't have too much to do with the staff (busy in last minute wedding preparations and family events) but were friendly and kind.

We will be back for the fabulous view with few steps and reasonable prices in such a gorgeous island!

Room Tip: Honeymoon suites were lovely!

We stayed at Blue Dolphins during first days of May 2011. This place was great and their hospitality unforgettable. The view is amazing, one of the best you could get just about anywhere.

We booked a room after reading some recent reviews on TripAdvisor which proved to be pretty accurate and helpful. Alexis, the owner, was extremely helpful and pleasant. He offered us quite a few perks (more to follow).

The hotel is situated in a slope of the caldera itself. We were given the room 104 “Paros” with a balcony. The view is simply amazing. To be sure, it is not 180 degrees, but rather 90 degrees (it may seem too detailed, but on Santorini you are always paying for the view). But don't be greedy! This view on Fira, the island's capital, the caldera and the volcano is better than what you get with a full panoramic view in Fira itself. You have a great scenery of natural beauty and a detailed view on the traditional village from above, clinging precariously to the caldera. This is the hotel view of one's life. Think about The Lord of the Rings, Part III. This is somewhat better – and real.

Now, if you stay in a room with a shared balcony, don't worry, the view will be the same magnificent. And finally you have the same view from the breakfast area. There should be some suites with a full panoramic view at Blue Dolphins (at a different price). Wedding ceremonies are held in their breakfast area with people coming from as far as China! By the way, the breakfast is very, very good, with jam made by Alexis' mother.

The room (the size of two rooms of a standard hotel here, with a vast bathroom) is recently renovated, convenient and impeccably clean – two very friendly cleaning ladies see to this. The beds are new, the sleep quality excellent. There is a free mini bar and a safe (not that any security issue exists, of course). The air condition is new and good, which is very important not only during summer, but also off season when you may need some light heating.

The location was pretty nice for me. There is a paved path to Fira from just above the hotel (50 steps, but remember, you wanted to be on the edge of the caldera). This is a extremely scenic route which takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes. On your way back you can use a bus or a taxi, the latter being just a little pricier for two persons, at 4 euros. There is no beach in proximity, but for that you should go to Perissa or Kamari – no dramatic views, but plenty of beaches (although for a beach vacation Santorini isn't a prime choice).

The hotel does not have a pool, but for me that would be a waste of water, since the island has great problems with drought and does not have its own water.

The staff in the hotel is always ready to help, we were very pleased by their response. There were only two minor difficulties. First, the bathroom door didn't locked properly and second, the wi-fi network was unworkable anywhere except certain areas close to the door. But this could be fixed with just a little more powerful router. And remember, a free wi-fi network is still a rarity for Greek hotels.

Now about perks given to us by the owner. Because we were traveling with a small child, he gave us a free room upgrade, a free additional bed for our daughter (other hotels here typically charge you for that, and the charge is quite significant) and a choice between a free transfer to/from the port and a free car for two days (available when staying for several nights). We also got an extension of our stay there because our ship was leaving late in the afternoon and an additional discount because of the preferred payment method. In all, all these amounted to a significant sum. But please note that some of this could be made possible by the fact that we were traveling slightly off season, so check with Alexis first.

Going here off season could be a great choice because of lower prices and lack of crowds in Fira, but at Blue Dolphins you have your privacy anyway - no discotheques or night clubs in proximity. But note that Santorini could be a harsh place and the weather is unpredictable. You can find yourself in the middle of a cloud, and the winds sometimes blow forcefully. During the season, however, it is extremely hot, and the volcanic sand on the few beaches is blistering. So for me the best time to visit in in April or May or in October for sightseeing, not for the beach.

In sum, I strongly recommend this hotel for everyone. It was a nice stay, many thanks to Alexis and to TripAdvisor reviewers.
