Stayed at the Sophia Beach for a week in mid-October 2009. Was a little worried as to how the weather would be at this time of year, however, the temperature was mostly sunny in the high 20's and we only had one of rain during our stay.
Could not fault the accomodation, rooms were fairly basic but very clean, the maid visits everyday except Sunday. The pool area overlooks the beach, this is shared with the complex next door. We didn't experience any problems finding free sunbeds around the pool due to the time of year.
The staff were very friendly and helpful. The owners also had a gorgeous Cocker Spaniel Pup, who I wanted to bring home. All of our fellow guests were also very friendly and we met some really nice people.
We ate at Sophia's 3 times during our stay, although the menu was a bit limited, the quality and value of the food served was excellent, I thoroughly recommend the Greek Meze for 2, which was fantastic value at 12 euros.
The price of a meal in the resort was fairly reasonable on average we were spending 25-30 euro's, including drinks. I would recommend the Gondola, for Italian food, which is part of the Majestic Hotel. We also tried a couple of Greek Taverna's in the resort, one by the name of Oscars which was quite nice and another called the Village, where the food was also lovely. I can honestly say that we didn't have any bad experience's when eating out in Platanias.
The price of drinks in the resorts bars are more expensive than most other Greek Island's that I have previously visited, around 3 euro 70 for a large Mythos Beer and 3 euro's for a glass of white wine. A good bar to try if you like sport is the Planet Bar, which is situated next to the Chinese on the main street. The staff there are very friendly and they show the majority of Premiership Football matches.
During our stay we also took the bus to Chania for the day. The bus runs frequently from Platanias (approx every half hour) and it costs aroud 3 euro per person. I would recommend a visit the the Venetian Harbour, which is very picturesque. Whilst in Chania, we ate at one of the restaurants by the Harbour, the food was quite expensive and the quality was extremely poor.
Overall we had a superb time in Platanias and I would not hesistate to return again at this time of year.
