“Good location and very service minded staff”
Reviewed May 14, 2014

we (wife and me) stayed at the hotel from April 24 to May 1 in room 107. Room 107 is a 2 rooms apartment situated at ground floor close to the pool and bar area, which probably in the high season is too close to the pool and bar unless you love high Greek music and "noising" kids from early morning to late evening. However we enjoined room 107 and despite is was at ground floor there was plenty of sunshine all day and not to forget the room was only 2 minutes walk from the sandy private (hotel) beach. WiFi available for 25 euro for a week, but the signal was very bad in the room, but reasonable outside at the balcony.
As the hotel are located in the center of Platanias with a huge number of restaurants and bars, we had no meals at the hotel. However various meals and drink packages are available from all inclusive to individual meals and drinks packages and in fact to reasonable prices.
I had to add that for families with kids are all inclusive a great benefit.
The hotel are based on families with children in all age, which means you don't have to use an alarm clock in the morning as most families are up around 7, which quite natural create some noise from the surrounding rooms/areas, not a big issue and you have then the benefit that after 10 in the evening are most light turned off in rooms.
The hotel staff was service minded, especially in the reception, but Caldera Bay is a charter tourist hotel, where most people stay for a week, prepaid in there home country and not a hotel where individuals make reservations or drop in from the street and that's make a difference in the service level.
Self catering is a possibility as there is many supermarkets close to the hotel, but as the kitchen
facilities in rooms are very spartan don't expect to be able to create and serve even simply meals except maybe a fried or boiled egg.

Room Tip: The hotel is huge which means there is also a huge difference of the location of the rooms. Some roo...

Nothing special aboat this hotel. Glad we didn't order all inclusive, because then breakfast was boring. The flat had a livingroom which was very dark all day, only the bedroom har a view :-\ . We har booked a seaview, but We overlooked a dusty parkinglot. The seaview was tiny and far away. The free sunbeds was occupied early, and this area was very noisy and crowded.

We stayed at the Atlantica Caldera Bay Hotel from 18th of May to 25th of May 2013. We stayed at the room number 224. Here's the good and the bad we found during our stay.

+Location is perfect right on a sandy beach, but still in the centre of Platanias, at the end of a quiet back street. The bus stop is also very near to the hotel.
+The apartment was large (especially for two people) with three balconies and one double and two single beds. It had a living room and a bed room.
+The air conditioner was very effective. There were two units, one in the bedroom and one in the living room.
+There were free sunbeds at the beach.
+The hotel had a minimarket and a restaurant, so it would have been very easy to just stay at the hotel for the whole holiday. Perfect for families with children, I guess.
+The hotel buffet breakfast was very nice with large variety of food from scrambled eggs to vegetables and a table of fruits.
+The rooms were cleaned every day (except for Sunday) and sheets changed every other day.
+The staff was nice, in every occation at least polite and mostly friendly.

-The bed was way too soft to sleep well in. Our backs hurt really bad for the first too nights, after which I think I got used to the softness but my boyfriend didn't. They said the matresses had just been changed to new ones, but it felt like there was no springing.
-The airconditioning was quite loud. As I wore earplugs, it didn't bother me but my boyfriend found himself turning it off on many nights.
-The elevator (used only by staff as far as I noticed) started to work around 7.30 am each morning and the sound was so loud you could clearly hear it in the hotel room.
-You could hear the sound of people talking as they walked by our hotel room. Again, didn't bother me with earplugs on.
-We took the all inclusive for one day (with 50% off the normal price) and found that the lunch and dinner weren't nearly as good as the breakfast. I would not take the all inclusive when booking a room, at least not with the full price of 38€/day. Though the good thing was, all cocktails and milkshakes from the pool bar were included in the price :)

Room Tip: Ask for a room near the ocean, if beach is the place where you'll be spending most of your holid...

We stayed here for a week with 3 kids and a friend family with 2 kids. The rooms are pretty Spartan, but hey, we only slept there.

The pool area is small, yet again enough, as we spent most of the time at the beach, which is right next to hotel. Not very secure the hotel area, as there are tens of entry points and no guards, no problems though. The location is excellent in the very centre of platanias.

Breakfast quite fine, althoug the baby chairs are from seventies, terrible big plastic monsters in a bad shape.

We had a second floor room, and the water pressure in shower was quite weak.

The wifi is unreliable and slow, so if you plan to work, don't.

The matress was terribly soft, almost unsleepable, I guess the springs were all dead.

Room Tip: our room was 641, overlooking to the pool

Myself, wife and 14 year old daughter stayed at the Atlantica a few weeks ok in the midst of a 40C heat wave. We had reserved one of the larger family rooms. The hotel is located in the center of Platanias which is very convenient. About 20 meters off the main street. Our room was large, huge porch (I think we got lucky here), big living room, ok bed room. The main problem was that the air conditioning could not keep up with demand. Somehow, the bedroom would get reasonably cool over a long time, but the living room/second bedroom did not. So we moved my daughters bed into our bedroom and all slept like a litter of kittens. The bathroom had some electrical problem and did not have lights. I talked to some of the other guests who had some similar problems. You get the point. Maybe I am partially to blame but because I did not complain, but I had the distinct feeling that it would not have helped.
The beach was ok, but a bit overcrowded. the pool area had an excellent small shop selling low price drinks, which was a big money saver. Dont get me wrong, its really not bad to stay here if you are not super demanding with your room. When we were there it was almost purely scandanavians staying.
A comment about eating. We did not take any kind of all inclusive breakfast of dinner or anything else and I am happy for that decision. There are many good restaraunts in Platanias and a bus ride away in Chania. In Plataias it is really worth taking a taxi up the hill to Cosmo or one of the other restaurants on the top of the hill. Cosmo is really first rate, and next door Vigli looks real good. Lower down the hill, walking distance to town, is Panorama, not quite as good but worth checking out. Eat about sunset-time to enjoy a truly spectacular view, and saunter back down to town stopping for an occasional Raki or wine at the various family owned inns. Excellent! There is a reasonable snackbar for breakfast called "Refresh" next to the hotel. Breakfast for 3 is about 18 € and quality is reasonable. Dinner prices for our group ranged from 60-100€, for starters, drinks, main foods and occasional desserts. The best Pito Gyro place in Platanias next to the main square/taxi station on the main drag. I dont remember name but you will see it for sure. Excellent lunch for 3 about 10€. Heading west on the main drag away from Chania direction about 1 km from Atlantica is a fish foot massage place, 5€ per 15 minutes, half the going rate and fine quality. Have a great time!

Room Tip: Take the large family room, the ordinary rooms look very small.

We stayed there in 2005. It was en lovely place, but the appartements must have been constructed by someone who is at a party. The kitchen has bin made by someone who is drunk or not in his/her proper condition or carpenter was not quite sober.

Just came back from Platanias, staying a week with the family at the hotel. Service was friendly and the room we got was OK, but not great. I got the feeling that some facelift should be done to the hotel rooms soon, as it was worn-out, at least ours. (shower handle broken, dirty glasses left at the sink to name a few things). Small things maybe, but for a 4 star hotel you might expect a little more. Overall the hotel is nicely situated, close to shops and restaurants, close to the sea, and the pool areas are perfect for small children. The staff was very friendly, always smiling and playing with our little daughter.
We had all inclusive, and ate at the Yalino restaurant. The food was excellent, but often bit too cold, even when we arrived just when lunch/dinner hours was starting.
