After visiting some of the restaurants on the main street of Platanias, we decided to use the power of Tripadvisor to find out what are the best rated spots in town. On top of the list was Kyano Beach Restaurant. When we found out it was located just next to our hotel Minoa Palace, we wanted to give it a shot and walked in for dinner. And boy, what a treat it was!
The location of the restaurant is nicely on the beach and you can choose between eating indoors or outdoors on the beach with a perfect sunset view. If you are walking on the main street, you are easily lured into one of these restaurants by their eager staff. Kyano, on the other hand, is quite well hidden, there is only a small sign on the street showing that there actually is a restaurant in the end of a quiet street. But do not be alarmed by this alley in the quiet part of the town, there is a real gem just waiting to be found.
Our waiter, Yiannis, was very welcoming, friendly and attentive. He also recommended a good red wine to go with our choice of foods. The mixed plate of Greek foods is an excellent choice to have as an appetizer, as you can try a little bit of everything. For us, the definite number one on this plate were the Zucchini Balls. I have to admit that I'm no vegetarian and have never liked zucchini, but these zucchini balls were amazing! For the main course I took the dish of the day, which on that particular day was lamb and potatoes. Again, no disappointment here. For the dessert we wanted to try baklava and ordered one portion with ice cream and another without. Yiannis warned us that baklava will be a very sweet dessert and recommended to order just one plate first and then add another if we still feel like it. Now how often are the waiters willing to stop customers from ordering food? Very nice touch not trying to maximize the profits, but actually being honest. And yes, one plate was enough for us. :)
During our holiday we also visited two other restaurants from the tripadvisor's top5 of Platanias, but in our minds, Kyano stood up as the absolute favourite. After the initial try, we did go to Kyano twice again, once for lunch and for our farewell dinner on the last night of our holiday. Every time we had to start with a plate of the excellent zucchini balls and when we asked the friendly manager what they are made of, he gave us a quick explanation of the ingredients and went as far as to go to the kitchen to get the recipe! We are definitely going to try them at home.
And my gf Laura wants to add that the cherry cheesecake (homemade by them on the same day) must not be missed, it was one of the best cheesecakes she's ever had.
