“Nice location, but not 4 Star + Voulisma beach”
Reviewed June 25, 2013

We travelled here in early June, very easy to get to from the airport in our hire car
We booked a Junoir Suite with a sea view, we were given exactly that, but our room was above both the bar and the dining area very noisy, plan, turn the air con on to drown out the noise,
no control for the air con, so i asked at reception, i was told the air con was not included in the room rate? i asked if we could be moved, yes in the morning no problem.
We were moved to alpha 1, the furthest room uphill from the reception, much quieter
The breakfast was adequate, the evening meals we tried were very average , but we only picked half board as it was the same price as b+b.
Now the positive nice pool area, helpful staff, cool beers and perfect location for both of the villages (piskopiano+ koutouloufari )further down the hill.
You must eat in David Veggara nice food and very reasonable prices
All of the bars and restaurants in the villages were all much the same very nice and traditional
If you have a car and like a beach you must drive to Voulisma Beach it is around 50mins away
take the highway to Agios Nikolaos one straight road, just before you arrive at Agios Nikolaos
turn right at the main crossroad towards towards ierapetra, follow the road which meanders around the coast for around 15/20mins look out for the sign for the beach on the lefthand side
(note there are other beaches on the way but this beach is stunning) crystal clear water, pure white gently sloping sand and easy parking. There are beds and parasols for hire 7 euros for 2 beds+parasol, ther is no beach bar, so stop at the shop up the hill from the car park for beers, water etc
We ventured into Stalis beach one night and found the Rovers Return Bar, it was half the price of the bars in the villages, and was very good fun
The weather for the duration of our 1 week stay was perfect, not to hot and there was a nice breeze

I share completely the negative review on this hotel. We visit Driades next door last year and we spent a lovely time, but, unfortunately for us, we decided to opt for Amazones this year. I don´t understand how people spent a lovely time: as many said food was a disaster. We waited for more than an an hour to get to our room, just to find that it was not what we booked. We argued with the manager Caterina about the voucher details and she stated it was a mistake from the travel agency. Stella, the assistant manager, was completely unresponsive. Our room was indeed dirty and with some insects all over. We asked for disinfection and it came only after two days. Sheets were old and worn-out. Even chairs on the lobby shows cracks like they are old and not mantained. Maybe it was a nice hotel, but now, it´s just a 2 star accomodations.
Lunch is not prepared there, but it is take away. Another point that shows that management doesn´t care.
Breakfast is definitely from Lidl product as may reviews pointed out, as we met the manager Caterina shopping there fro corn flakes and vegetables.
The view is nice, but as one of the lady wrote, is not what they show on their website. So that´s really cheating on people.
Maybe the manager Caterina reserves some special treatment for returning customers, but we, as new customers, don´t recommend this place.
Many thanks to Dimitris and Nikos: the only good things from the place.
I expect a very strong reply to my review from Management as I have seen in other cases. Well, I am sorry for Mrs. Caterina, but the truth is the truth.
Markus

After a very busy and cold winter, a week away at half term was just what the doctor ordered. we just had to return to probably the most relaxing place on earth. Amazones has proved to be a fantastic find a couple of years ago and we just can't help coming back for more. Caterina and her staff manage to guide you into "relax mode" within 24hours. She will advise on places to go, nothing is "too much trouble". We will be returning at the beginning of school holidays for another break, can't wait!!! Strongly agree with Alicia C re comments about transport to and from airport. Plenty of taxi's at airport, fantastic value too.

Room Tip: Sea view all the way

We booked again this year after a special sister holiday last Year.
The hotel is spotless and the furniture Traditional classy Greek.
The staff were helpful and attentive.
We experienced two illnesses of guests during our stay from England and Germany (Both existing conditions).
The guests could not praise Caterina and her staff enough for their Quality of care and helpfulness.
Views are spectacular and local Villages Greek and traditional.
Can Highly recommend the Greek Evening in Old Hersonnisos on Monday Evenings.
The Live Music Night at Amazones was also another Highlight of the week.
Top Tip do not book transfer with your Holiday Provider they are the ones who abandon the Guests at the bottom of the steps or Road with poor directions on how to get there
It is better to get a Taxi from Heraklion Airport who take you straight to the hotel lift.
A place where you can totally chill or use as a base to see the wider sights of Crete.
As sisters working in Education and Health Service we loved it and came back totally refreshed.
This will be an annual trip to our heaven.
Love it!

Room Tip: All rooms are good and you are only a minute away from some of the best views at pool.

We booked and paid for a 'Full Sea View' room. We were directed to a garden view room an hour after arriving. I went to the reception to complain that the room offered was not what we had paid for, only to be told that there were no Sea View rooms available until the Sunday 16th, this was more than 1/2 way thru our 7 day holiday.
After a short while we were then offered a sea view room in the sister hotel suites called Kalimera run by Elina and her husband who were so much more accommodating. But, these suites are only rated a 3 stars and not the 4 star accommodation we had paid for either, however, we preferred these to the Amazones Suites so didn't bother to move back. Some of the facilities in the Amazones were not readily available in Kalimera but were provided when requested.
We noticed that several couples were moved from 1 hotel to the other, i'm note sure if they were asked or told to move, the moves appeared to be in both directions.
Like other reviewers we can confirm tat the evening food was always cold, no matter what time you turned up, and we tried several different times, the only hot meal we had was at the local taverna Kostas, but we spent an additional 30 euros for the priviledge for 2 courses and 2 beers.
Also like other reviewers we noticed that the only person doing all the work at Amazones was Dimitri, to whom nothing was too much trouble.
On the upside the view and the location was superb, The local villages were pictureaque with there quaint narrow and steep streets, you need some kind of transport to get around unless you plan to sit around the pool all day.
We were inspired by last years reviews to choose this holday in the 1st place and the opening sentence of this review put a dampener on the initial experience for us.

I have just been lucky enough to go to this hotel again, which is my 3rd time. It was like coming home, I was given a big hug from Katerina, who once again looked after me and my son.
The room was spacious, it had a bedroom and a lounge area with TV, air conditioning , fridge and was very clean and well kept.
The breakfast was once again a good variety of cereal, cheese, breads, jam, eggs, and cake, plus other choices on each day, much more than you expect in Greece !!
We relaxed around the large pool area which has fabulous views of the sea and town below.
The cocktails are great and the atmosphere in the hotel is one of relaxed chic.
I would highly recommend this hotel to all my friends, and in fact some of them are booked for later in the year .

We have just returned from a week at Amazones Village Suites. We stayed in a garden view suite which was good for the money however would really benefit from an update as some of the furniture and plenishings were past their best - namely the bedding and bedroom furniture. The pool area was lovely with stunning views out to the sea and close-by Hersonissos.
One of the downsides to this hotel was the food. We stayed half-board and although breakfast was enjoyable - albeit the same everyday- dinner was a huge disappointment. Every dish was cold and even going at half 7( when dinner is firstly available) did not seem to solve this problem. We were not the only guests to think this as many held the same views and some people even complained to Katarina (the manager). Luckily there are many lovely restaurants nearby so eating out was not a problem.
The hotel really benefits from the presence of Dimitri who it appears is left to do almost everything, and the barman (Nico however i may be mistaken) was also great fun and his cocktails were fabulous!
As other reviewers have pointed out Katarina really should improve her attitude if she wants people to return to the hotel.
Overall i did enjoy my stay however some improvements should be made for it to deserve the 4 star rating that it has.
