Upon arrival we were immediately made welcome, all luggage taken care of and a cup of tea and drinks for the children were awaiting us, shortly followed by a much needed glass of wine after a long day of traveling, they also ensured that the children's food was being prepared as we arrived.
Lisa, the chalet manager, gave us a brief chat, she was aware that we had a long day and conscious not to overload us with information, she even moved our ski hire fitting to the following morning as she sensed we were all a bit tired! Immediately our evening was made relaxing by all the chalet staff and we instinctively knew this holiday was going to be amazing.
The chalet itself is stunning, kept to very high standard and absolutely immaculate, I am a clean freak and I was very impressed, the chalet was cleaned on a daily basis, the staff took an upmost pride in keeping the chalet clean and tidy.
The food was outstanding, Jon the chef prepared one hot breakfast dish along with the continental choice every morning, there was a delicious cake waiting for us everyday, a different one each day and then the children would be fed earlier than the adults which really worked well. The children were completely spoilt by Jon's food, they all ate very well, they would love to sit on the high stools looking into the kitchen and he would happily chat with them as he prepared the food and the children loved to watch him cook. Jon even chatted to the children and asked them about their favourite meals whether this was a main, desert or breakfast item and he incorporated one each of their favourites within the week, very attentive indeed. The adults food was amazing, the pre dinner canapés and fizz were a delight and each course as stunning as the next. I often picked Jon's brains about his dished and ingredients!
Coming out of the chalet and getting to the slopes was a breeze thanks to our dedicated driver Gael, he was on hand to help us novice skiers, whether it be recommending certain runs or helping the children in and out of their ski boots and skis. After a tiring day skiing Gael would arrive punctually helping us get our skis in, loading the children into the car and unloading the other side, he would help us off with our boots and load them onto the boot warmer for the next day, a very attentive service, on one occasion my youngest fell asleep on the way home and Gael carried him in for us as we would have struggled with our ski boots on. This made our holiday run exceptionally smoothly and Gael was a complete star.
Lisa and Tracey really looked after our every need, whether it be pouring you that much needed glass of wine after a day on the slopes, sorting out a bigger pair of ski boots or making sure the sauna was warm on our return to the chalet, they wanted to ensure we enjoyed every moment of our stay and were on hand to do this.
They were also on hand to provide useful information regarding our day skiing, for instance with regard to clothing, its always nice to have another opinion on whether you are wearing too many or too little layers, they also kept us motivated on a few days when we felt our lessons hadn't gone well and we felt a bit deflated. It was lovely at the end of the day to have a chat with everyone and share our experience and also take on board any recommendations they could offer.
To summarise, the service and attention from all staff, Lisa, Tracey, Jon and Gael with beyond our expectations and most greatly received, they helped to make a truly exceptional holiday experience.
We have just returned from an amazing week at La Grange Au Merle, where we enjoyed one of the best family skiing holidays we've ever enjoyed.
We travelled with two other families, so we were a party of 13 (6 adults, 7kids), not an easy number to accommodate, but the chalet did it perfectly.
Firstly a word about the pre holiday service. Clare from Clarian Chalets, who run and own the chalet, was superb in her organisation and communication. Ski lessons for 7 kids (& 1 adult), lift passes, transfers were all organised perfectly. She was really prompt, clear and friendly in all her communication with us. And showed great patience when we were slow to respond to her questions. John the chef (more on him later) also got in touch the week before we arrived and asked about meal times for kids and dietary preferences. We were incredibly well organised and prepared before we'd even left home.
The transfer from the airport was painless (1hr 45) and we were all excited to see our home for the next week. We were bowled over. The Chalet is stunning. It's spacious, comfortable, warm, welcoming and has views to die for. All the bedrooms are really well appointed and even though we were in the mezzanine bedroom (smallest) we still felt we had plenty of room. I did bang my head a couple of times.....but at 5ft 8in - i took that as a complement.
The bar was well stocked (and used). The food was outstanding (and plentiful). The hot tub was well used and the sauna at the end of the day was most welcome. The kids snug was a god send, and the boot room was warm and spacious.
What really made the holiday for us was the quality of the staff. the Chalet Manager - Lisa - was warm friendly, well organised & super helpful. The chef - John - was not only an amazing cook, he was also warm friendly and great with the kids. The chalet host - Tracy - was also great, chatty, good fun, nothing was too much trouble and the chalet was always spotless from top to bottom (We think she never got out skiing at all). And finally special thanks to Gael our driver. He was simply brilliant. The kids loved him, as did the adults as nothing was ever too much trouble. He was friendly, interesting and great to chat to....we might look him up when he's sailing in the summer!
Just to show there is some balance to this review.....the inly downside was the ski hire company.....I would never ever use SkiHire2U.....their equipment was awful, poor choice, old kit and set up with wrong din settings, and at a premium price point.
But this review isn't about them. I can't recommend La Grange , Clarian Chalets or Lisa, John, Tracy & Gael enough. They have truly made our holiday for us. thank you.
Perfect luxury chalet for a week away from the world! Utterly spoilt with fabulous chef, chalet staff, own driver and a sauna every night! Rooms delightful and every need catered for, from home made bath salts, fluffy robes, slippers and afternoon cake! Ski hire and passes delivered to the door made the whole week hassle free. The skiing was fabulous and the chalet was such a lovely place to come home to every night. Chatel is a delightful town and the chef's night off forced us to try its delights. Six adults, nine children, no fights and lots of laughs! The only downside was the required diet once home from all the delicious food.
Had a great family gathering (7 Adults + 8 Children) staying here for a weeks Skiing
As a very large spacious chalet, it did not feel crowded, combining the luxury of a boutique hotel (with its own DriverHostess& Chef) with the relaxing feeling of a 2nd home. The log fire and the hot tub were great, with an amazing snug bedroom hidden away up in the roof!
We were a very mixed group of beginners right through to off-piste Skiers⛷and Snowboarders, and Chatel had a huge variety of slopes to keep us all entertained. The mountain restaurants were fab, full of character and lovely food.
As a keen hillwalker, it would be interesting to visit in the Summer to see/feel the contrast in the village & mountains.
The indoor/outdoor swimming pool ♂️in Chatel is great - lovely and warm, the kids had great fun jumping out the pool to create a snow-angel before jumping back in to get warm❄️
Would definitely love to come back to this amazing place
I chose this chalet to celebrate my husband's birthday and to spend the week with our family. It surpassed all of our expectations. The food was fantastic, thank you James, the staff were so attentive and nothing was too much trouble. They were so patient with our 2 year old granddaughter and she loved every minute. We felt like royalty being chauffeured to and from the slopes at our request. On returning to the chalet after a day skiing we were spoilt for choice deciding whether to eat the freshly baked cakes, take a dip in the hot tub or relax in the sauna. If you are looking for a little bit of luxury in Chatel look no further. We will definitely visit again.
fabulous chalet in a fabulous location . Nothing was too much trouble for the hosts who made us feel very very welcome indeed. Would recommend without a shadow of a doubt , in fact looking to book next year:)
We booked La Grange as a place for extended family to meet for a summer holiday. The chalet has been beautifully renovated and is really well appointed. There are 5 good size double bedrooms plus a kids bunk room - beds comfy and nice linen. We were self catering and Clare put us in touch with a local lady who made some very nice and good value meals that we could heat up and eat in. The chalet is probably a 15 min walk into town so we often drove up as had small kids in tow. Would happily recommend.
