This is a charming, comfortable and rather old-fashioned hotel close to the ports and the tunnel. Montreuil itself is an attractive, historic small town with well-preserved fortifications. The style of the hotel is country manor rather than grand chateau. Rooms on the first floor of the main building are of a good size. Bathrooms are somewhat dated but adequate. Dinner was largely traditional and of a good standard although somewhat expensive at 75 euros while breakfast was well above average. Service was efficient and positive in tone.

Room Tip: I stayed in room 4 which had a balcony where one could sit out - not much use in March but I suspect it would be very pleasant on a summer's evening.

We have stayed at the Chateau a couple of times in the lovely courtyard rooms. Always expert service and superb food and wines - a special birthday celebration lunch with family was completely perfect. An occasion we shall remember always with enormous pleasure.

Room Tip: Courtyard rooms are very pretty

Being in Madam's bad books because I forgot Valentine's Day, I succeeded magnificently in retrieving the situation by late booking a night and gourmet meal here. I had stayed in Montreuil many times over the years, but never pushed the boat out for the Chateau - I should have done.

We were very well welcomed and told that they were upgrading us from the "cheap" (everything is relative) garden room that we had booked on a special out of season offer for Euros 150 to the magnificent room 5 in the main house for the same price. The pastel blue and white decor in the florid but at the same time strangely restrained french style bedroom opened onto a large ensuite bathroom of glass and chrome that took the breath away with its design and thought. Beyond that was a small room with bidet and loo.. According to the website, this room is normally priced @ Euros 235.

We had the a la carte menu at dinner which was E75 each, and quite superb both in design and execution, plus in the service and quality of the ingredients. There are wines for every pocket and taste, and even though on a Sunday night there were only three couples in the dining room, it never felt cold or soul-less.

Continental breakfast was fine, and there is cooked breakfast available. My wife said the coffee was the best she had ever tasted and she's aged 69 (and we have travelled an awful lot, worldwide)!

Two tiny distaff sides : it was so warm in our room that on a frosty night we had to slightly open one of the windows - apparently the temperatures are controlled automatically and centrally. And if you are paying so much for your room and dinner, do you really want to be asked for another E12 for hotel garage parking? It seemed a little petty, and certainly at this time of year there were plenty of spaces in the little square outside, and no restrictions. However, in keeping wth the lovely manner in which we were treated throughout our stay, even though I had pre-booked the garage, I was permitted not to take it up.

The walled gardens, even in the sharp frost of the next morning were magnificent, the pool looks inviting for the summer, and the adjacent ramparts at Montreuil are always an interesting walk to clear the lungs and head. And only an hour from Calais as well.

Room Tip: Room 5 was magnificent, top of the stairs and immediately on your left. that means its over the small lounge that was used when we were there for after-dinner coffe and liqueurs - I don;'t know whether it would suffer noise in high season.

We stayed here following a disastrous night at another Relais. What a contrast. We had Room 1, a beautiful 4-poster with huge bathroom overlooking the entrance. Excellent food, wine, welcome and service. The walk round the ramparts is on the doorstep with the most breathtaking views. The wifi works. It is the perfect distance from the Chunnel. So good we are already booked into the Garden annexe for my birthday in March with some friends!

We live in London and we decided to stop in Chateau Montreuil on our way from London to Paris by car. We love Relais & Chateau experiences (usually, with some exceptions) and we found this property gor-ge-ous!! It is a little chateau on the top of the (beautiful) village of Montreuil, very charming, cozy and elegant.

The property has a beautiful garden where guests can enjoy a number of services in sunny days. Inside the property - in the common areas - is elegant and similar to a private country house. The breakfast room offers a beautiful garden view and the quality of ingredients is truly exceptional (and we understand largely hand-made).

We slept in a suite in a dependance (1 minute from the main building) which was on two floors: beautiful, with two bathrooms, a great wonderful sleeping area on top and a living room downstairs. It was winter time and the room had a great heating system on. Charming furniture, very good taste, exceptional style. We loved it. Definitely recommended.

Room Tip: We slept in a Suite in the dependance, chalet-style. Great.
