The Golden Frog Inn
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed June 1, 2013

My wife and I recently stayed at The Golden Frog Inn and it was absolutely perfect for us.

Everything about the place was comfortable and relaxed. We are the type of people that go with the flow, always looking for those special gems in life. Becky and Larry have built a wonderful life for themselves up on that hill, and Adrian is a pleasure to be around.

We initially came for 1 night but ended up staying 3. The happy hour is a wonderful way to get to know everyone and is also a nice routine in the day.

If you are reading this review I am assuming you already know about El Valley. If you are thinking you need to make the treck to Boquete or Bocas Del Toro to experience something special in Panama, know that El Valley is truly special. You won't be disappointed.

The only thing I will say is that we rented a car which gave us freedom to explore. The Golden Frog is a long walk to town so having a car will make your trip that much more enjoyable. But, I think that's safe to say no matter where you go : )

Last note. We will come back.

ps, Do the night hike!!!

pps, Visit Massiel for food. You won't be disappointed.

It rained the whole 3 days we were in El Valle and boy are we glad we picked this place! Not a bad place to be hold up! We did ask for the smallest room, and it was small, but w the grounds being so expansive there was plenty of places to stretch out and read and enjoy relaxing. Happy Hour is a wonderful addition to sip wine and talk w Larry and Becky. It was quite enjoyable and added to the experience.

Our family had a wonderful stay at the Golden Frog Inn. I can only echo the many nice comments about Becky, Larry, and Adrian. They were gracious hosts and treated us like family. The landscaping and birdwatching (right from our patio!) were fantastic. We cancelled our trip to the beach and stayed an extra day! There are not enough good things to say about the Golden Frog Inn!

My husband and I stayed for one night in April...would have loved to stay longer. Beautiful views, clean room at a reasonable price (Room 5 for $60), and the owners Becky and Larry, plus the manager Adrian were very helpful and friendly. They have a happy hour with drinks and snacks and a kitchen area equipped with coffee and fresh fruit for breakfast.Becky had good recommendations for area restaurants, and Adrian was able to advise on local activities.Very relaxing and quiet.

W.r.t. to all the positive reviews, for us they were all true!

We loved our stay at the Golden Frog Inn.
We had room #1 for 3 nights. It is very spacious, looks out on the pool, has a well equipped kitchen and a large private terrace. Becky, Larry and Adrian were very welcoming and we felt at home immediately at arrival. The happy hours were a nice way to meet the other guests.
The environment is wonderful for hiking (India Dormida and Cerro Gaital) as well as for birdwatching. The cooler climate in El Valle was a real relieve after the heat from the low-lands.
The rooms are VERY nice, super-clean and well maintained. In fact this applies to the entire complex. Swimming-pool, gardens, etc, all is extremely well maintained.
We were here in April on weekdays and found El Valle a very quiet and relaxed village.

No, fortunately not!! But plenty of clean water, lot's of space to swim within a very well kept garden - just inviting!

Accommodation very good, spacious room (s) individual and comfortable beds, flat screen tv if
you are inclined, nice little kitchens to do your own catering if wished; otherwise no restaurant or dining room,BUT a Happy Hour each day at 6 ! Cafe, tea provided, oil & vinegar too - no food!!

Away from the madding crowd, this little family run hotel is set in a peaceful and pretty part of an equally quiet volcanic crater, plenty of flowers, but as mentioned, no frogs!! Especially the exclusive little golden one which EL VALLE is famous for! If you would like a memorable stay, then book here!

Room Tip: There is a choice depending on how many in your party, additional rooms for children or the odd frie...

The hotel does have a great mountain view but that's it. Just spent the worst 4 days of my life. Will never return. Staff is nice only upon arrival. Was not told a car is absolute for the area. After expressing to staff the difficulty finding a bus taxi or tour guide was told by the front desk person Adrian that we should have known better and that it would be unlikely that a tour guide or taxi would even show up if requested. Staff had little to no knowledge of the area. Was unable to find any transportation to hiking areas. When things went wrong such as the bed being covered with ants and taking the wrong bus we were blamed. Linens smell of mildew. Furniture in and out of room is extremely uncomfortable. Rooms are dark and dingy with poor lighting and horrendous cutlery. I would advise avoiding Panama as it is unfriendly and could care less about tourism. Being fluent in Spanish is also a requirement.

Room Tip: Choose another hotel.

I’m sorry this family found Panama so difficult. They called to request arrival a day earlier because they were unhappy with the hotel they were in (with has an excellent reputation). We accommodated them.

We arranged pick up transportation from the other hotel. This included a stop for lunch and shopping.

They requested a night jungle hike with a local guide which we arranged for them. I loaned one lady my clothes for this as she had nothing appropriate to wear. When I was asked it was OK to go on the hike intoxicated, I advised against it.

They requested dinner reservations at a local 5 star restaurant. There was confusion with transportation (they had no money). We drove them there and picked them up after dinner. We also drove them to a cash machine.

They requested massages in their room, we arranged this. They requested another the following day. We arranged this. They left without notice or canceling this appointment.

They told us that they had read in a tour book NOT to rent a car in Panama because it was impossible to get out of the city. Panama is full of travelers with rental cars.

The travelers above statement; “ Being fluent in Spanish is also a requirement.” simply is not true.

They shared with us that they cancelled and changed their reservations with 2 highly respected hotels in Panama because they were not happy there. They complained that they were charged. They also changed plans with us at the last minute We did not charge them.

This family also wrote a review on The Panama Canal, which they were not at all happy with. The Panama Canal, has 1,265 excellent reviews. They gave it a “terrible” review.

Again, I'm sorry they were not happy here. We soon realized upon their arrival here that they were not enjoying their journey and we all tried as best we could to change that. We, as so many others love Panama, the people and the country.
