“Small market but a fun stop in El Valle”
Reviewed January 24, 2013

Small handicrafts market with fresh fruit and vegetables and crafts for sale. Lots of beaded jewelry, some art, and the renowned wooden trays. A good relaxing spot to stop before or after lunch. Be sure to bargain. Right on the main strip of town - you can't miss it.

“Getting too touristy now”
Reviewed August 26, 2012

This used to be a true native market but it's become just another tourist attraction these days. There are still lovely natives crafts offered but few bargains anymore.

“An El Valle Must!”
Reviewed July 22, 2012

You can't go to El Valle and not go to the market. Its now open every day but Sunday still has the most people. It really is the quintessential thing to do here. You get to see the local culture, crafts and people.

“Great markets, but be prepared for winding mountain roads”
Reviewed May 26, 2012

We visited the Market at 'el Valle' [de Anton] May 2012 on a Saturday (5-26-12). Though not as busy as Sunday, it was still a worthwhile trip. Good fresh food (not sure how prices compare) and some interesting tourist-type wares, as well as many different plants and flowers.

I would caution those traveling with children (we had nine in a Toyota Hiace), or anyone who is susceptible to motion sickness, that the roads into town, though very well paved, are VERY curvy. The view is fantastic, but I am sure the rear of the vehicle was quite the ride. We had one 4-year old lose his oats on the way down, and a 5-year-old do the same on the way back--bring all those extra plastic bags you have from Super 99, Rey, and all the other shopping places!

Also, bring some drinks with you, either water or ginger ale in a bottle, that may help ease the motion effect a bit.

Finally, if your children are like our older ones, constantly reading or playing game-boy in the car, I would strongly discourage this habit for this trip. Firstly there is so much to see and the vistas as your round some of the bends are truly breath-taking. Secondly, reading or video games in the car is a sure-fire way to induce car-sickness, especially in this terrain.

“local market with friendly vendors”
Reviewed February 17, 2012

Much like the farmers market in my hometown. Farmers bring their crops in, plants for sale and lots of vendors selling homemake wares- panted platters, beeded necklaces, aplique items, panama hats. For me not much interesting to buy except a Kuna woman selling her homemade molas. Lots and lots and lots of them. All were beautifully done by her and slightly cheaper than you can buy elsewhere. I enjoyed discussing the designs and how she made (in Spanish only). $30, 25 and $15 by size.. Check out Flora Saltzman's shop in Panama City online to see examples of prices of new and used molas.
It is a nice drive up to the valley. Rim of volcano was shrouded in clouds and misting kept one cool. Lots of shops on the main street and restuarants to have a bit at.
