“Couldn't have asked for anything better for our honeymoon”
Reviewed March 4, 2010

I did a lot of research when picking a place for my honeymoon and couldn't have been happier with my choice. I emailed Stephanie before getting there and she was very responsive and offered to arrange a taxi from the airport in Tambor for us. I'd highly recommend flying into Tambor instead of driving from San Jose. It's a lot easier and probably cheaper than driving. Plus if you need to get around once there, ATVs are available to rent.

The first thing we realized when we got there was that we were in a beautiful section of the world that wasn't highly developed. The beaches were great. They aren't shipped in sand, beaches, they were beautiful natural beaches. The roads were dirt for half the trip getting from the airport to the hotel, which made things slightly rough, but it wasn't bad.

The hotel is great. It's well designed. The infinity pool is sweet and they used local rocks to create the shower.

We had the two bedroom on the right side of the pool. It has a private balcony that was great for having breakfast on in the mornings. They provide their guests with dishes and silverware and cooking utensils.

The surfing lesson with Jim was a lot of fun. I wish I had done it earlier in our stay so that I could continue to practice. Stephanie was great at recommending places to go and setting up our horseback ride, ATV rental, and couple's massage.

Overall, a wonderful stay.

My family stayed at Casa Marbella after reviewing a few sites - notably Trip Advisor - and we loved it. This is a get away from the typical resort town - very laid back with surfers in mind. That said, nearby eateries are very good and range from low cost to expensive. This is a great place to hang out for a week. The hosts are attentive and will help you arrange any activity - whether horseback, surfing (Jim is a great instructor for kids and new surfers), snorkeling or ziplining. This is a small boutique hotel with a great pool and lovely porches.

Our experience with Casa MarBella was outstanding from start to finish. We rented the three bedroom condo and a two bedroom suite, which served us well as home base for our weeklong six person surfing excursion. The rooms are large and comfortable and we found them to be clean and well maintained. The bathrooms are large and the showers have great water pressure and plenty of hot water. The housekeeper did a nice job straightening up the rooms each day and she replaced the towels and linens several times during our seven night stay. The views from the hotel are beautiful, especially from the infinity pool, and the pool deck is the perfect place to relax and socialize after hours in the surf. Also, we found Stephanie and Jim to be customer service oriented innkeepers. Stephanie arranged our taxi service to/from Tambor airport, assisted in changing one of our Sansa flights, made several reservations for us at the extraordinary restaurant just up the hill from the hotel, and arranged for on-site massages on the pergola. Jim gave three of us a two hour surfing lesson at a very reasonable rate, provided very helpful guidance about surfing at Playa Carmen, arranged for delivery of ATVs to the hotel, and provided excellent restaurant recommendations. Other than residing on a very steep hill, the hotel could not be better located. In addition to being a short distance from the beach, it sits above the center of town where there are several surf shops, restaurants, grocery stores and an ATM. We were pleasantly surprised by how good the food was in Santa Teresa – even the local sports bar, Good Vibrations, had good food, cold beer and the NFL playoff games. As with any surfing community, the atmosphere was laid back and very casual. Many of the hotels appear to cater to the backpacker crowd; thus, Casa MarBella seems to be one of the few adult options in Santa Teresa. We highly recommend it.

The hotel was quite picturesque. Beautiful structure from the outside and the pool is really nice. There is plenty of space on the sundeck with lounge chairs and a few in the shade which is nice for reading a book and saving yourself from a sunburn. Jim and Stephanie are super nice and helpful. I was slightly dissapointed in the rooms though. I think it was pretty clean, but just felt a little dirty in certain areas. Some small stains on the walls and the sheets and comforter. Plus the gas tank as part of the kitchenette was leaking and causing a terrible smell. We just disconnected it and then the smell was gone. Overall, I think for the price it was a good deal. Plus the best restaurant in town is right next door. Be sure to be prepared for a little hike up the hill every time you go anywhere. But it's good exercise and makes the view worth it.

To finally arrive at Casa Marbella after a long flight was heaven in itself but we had yet to know how great it really was. We spent two weeks in the hotel and used it as our base of operation for ziplining, sailing, snorkeling, fishing, 4-wheeling, and just playing on the beach! Many thanks to Jim & Stephanie for helping us every step of the way to having the vacation of our lives! Everything from having our ATV delivered to helping us find the best dining Santa Teresa has to offer (which is a lot!) was all graciously provided. The rooms are clean and cozy, the decks offer breathtaking views of the Pacific from above the jungle canopy, and we can't forget the awesome infinity pool! Melissa and I fell in love with Costa Rica from Jim and Stephanie's hotel with the romantic view and fabulous sunsets. It will always be a special place for us, especially because I proposed one quiet evening in that pool and watched my girl accept with tears in her eyes. We will be happily married the next time we visit Casa Marbella, and that will be our honeymoon in one year!

Casa MarBella is, hands down, the best place I have ever stayed on vacation. It is not one of those generic sprawling, "five-star-luxury" complexes where you become lost and anonymous along with all the other "guests"; It is a magical, intimate place that exudes charm and grace and a real sense of connection. It is run by a real family (Stephanie, Jim and their daughter Lia) that lives on the premises and makes you feel as if you are part of the family. People talk with each other, become friends--connect. Hazy, the housekeeper, is an absolute gem--always willing to help in any way that she can, always a smile on her face, a genuinely sweet human being. The grounds, the views, the physical appointments are all incredible, but the thing that makes this place is the intangible heart and magic and sense of connection that fills every corner of Casa MarBella. I will be back. And soon I hope.

We loved our time at Casa MarBella! When we arrived and saw was a fantastic view the hotel had and how comfortable to room were and how relaxing and enjoyable the town of Malpais is, we were sorry we didn't have more time to stay! The pool is fantastic and just the thing to beat the heat while still soaking in the sun while admiring the Pacific. Our room was comfortable and had a fun innovative decorative style which added to it. The town of Malpais is a fantastic low-key surfer town. While we don't surf and usually don't really fit in with the "surfer crowd", we were so relaxed that we really enjoyed ourselves in this small, off the beaten path locale. Only caveat to Casa MarBella - in order to have such wonderful views and thus such a great small hotel, they are located up on a hill that requires you have 4-wheel drive or at least a pretty heavy car to get you up the steep gravel/sand road. If we were to return (as we hope to!), we would come by bus from the ferry and just rent an ATV when going anywhere outside town. That being said, parking our car on the road was safe and we weren't very stressed about it considering our surroundings. Highly Recommend Casa MarBella
