Casa Zen Guest House & Yoga Center
Reviewed February 9, 2013

So I arrive at the beautiful beach of Santa Teresa in early July. After walking the single road from Malpais I stumble upon Casa Zen. Tucked away in luscious gardens, this affordable yet neat little hostel really lives up to its name. With plenty of 'hanging-out' areas set with pillows and hammocks, it is easy to unwind and chill out. This is furthered by a friendly and open atmosphere at the hostel, which is mustered in no small part by the awesome guys that run the place.

The hostel is within spitting distance of the beach, and two great surf spots (playa Carmen and playa Santa Teresa) spoil the more active traveller. It is also possible to rent Quads from various places in the town

There is a supermarket about 50 metres away further down the road, and good provision to cook for yourself at the hostel with two working kitchens. There are also plenty of restaurants within walking distance (if you're lucky you may catch some fresh home-made empanadas from next door!). Complimentary breakfast is also served at the hostel each day.

The hostel hosts daily yoga sessions- the gorgeous surroundings makes the experience more spiritual....despite the fact that I hadn't sweat so much in my entire life.

As the name suggests, I was only planning on staying in Santa Teresa for a few days. I didn't leave till Mid August. It was undoubtedly the best time I had during my 3 month trip to Central America.

Ara, Kelly, other Kelly and Minor (not forgetting Ron-B) you guys made my stay amazing

Best of Luck

Dr. James :)

Room Tip: If you've got the cash, there's a kick but suite on the first floor ;)

Casa Zen was the perfect vacation. Wonderfully helpful staff, full kitchen, multiple yoga and fitness classes each day, a food store, surf shop and cafes 100 paces in one direction and the beach 109 in the other, hammocks and cozy nooks about at Casa zen. But the true value is in the people- the wonderful staff and also the other guests. If you are looking for a party hostel, please keep looking. You will find a mix if respectful and mature travelers here of all ages. . Family friendly but perfect for singles and couples. My typical day was a sunrise surf followed by free breakfast of tropical fruit and toast, then yoga, then hammock time, back to the beach for a long walk, another yoga fitness class, lunch, chill time, and sunset surfing followed by potluck dinners with the other hip and lovely travelers. Occasionally we'd organize field trips to other local beaches and attractions.

You will not find a more vigorous and challenging yoga than with Adrian, or a more motivating cardio workout than with Gemma. Do take a surf lesson or two with Martin (Gemma's partner) and you will have arrived in your heavenly vacation.

Try and book as many days or weeks as possible. It fills quickly but it was worth room hopping to stay more time. Had originally planned three days here then to continue to Manuel Antonio and Corcovado. Be forewarned if you are set in ither destinations do them first, ad once you arrive you will not want to leave.

All that said. There are some considerations for luxury seekers: water is room temp (you will not want hot as it is quite hot here) and baths and showers are shared.

When in doubt, book here longer. It was exactly what I needed.

Also - they rent bikes and surf boards for fair prices and will help you take care of any arrangements you need help with.

Also - meticulously clean and conscious owners.

Rooms were very good - could be better only with more storage/ shelves for belongings and reading lights.

Casa Zen is clean and has a helpful staff. If you want a good night's sleep, come here. The other patrons are generally focused on doing yoga and other healthy pursuits so you probably won't have people getting hammered drunk in your hostel at all hours of the night. The showers and bathrooms are shared, but are clean, Easy access to a great beach and yoga classes ($9 per class) twice a day. A great spot to mellow out.

My husband and I had the pleasure of spending a week at the Casa Zen guest house & yoga center in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica last month, which, coincidentally enough, is owned by a Lawrence-native. They offer daily yoga classes (morning, afternoon & evening) along with 4-day and 7-day yoga retreats. Instructors travel from all over to teach there and I felt I learned something new each class.

Not only is Casa Zen itself absolutely marvelous, but it's location is hidden, remote and charming - far off the beaten path - adjacent to pristine, white sand beaches with some of the best (and least crowded) surf in the world. Plus, the prices are quite reasonable. We rented the apartment for the week, but the smaller guest rooms are quite nice as well. The atmosphere is unparalleled and we enjoyed visiting with the other guests.

I can't really say enough about this place. If you ever have the opportunity to go, do so without hesitation.

Room Tip: Top floor front corner room (one full bed and bunk beds) has the best airflow which is worth a lot i...

My stay at Casa Zen was exactly what I was looking for - chilled out and convenient. The beach 1 minute walk away is beautiful and there are good restaurants and a super market very close. They have opened up the old restaurant kitchen now or guest's use - so the facilities are now excellent! Bathrooms and all other areas were kept clean. Staff were mostly extremely friendly and helpful - I think some times there is a slight cultural difference that means some staff could come across as slightly stabdoffish. Definitely book ahead and make sure you have everything organised by 8pm because that is when everything closes up and the staff go home - only an issue if you need something, I didn't have any issues with this.

Casa Zen is a wonderful place to stay! The building is nice and got an asian touch, situated in a small garden. The owner Kelly, is a great person, who really cares for her guests and is always helpful, as is the whole staff at Casa Zen. The rooms are simple, but homey and the beds are comfortable. There are no private bathrooms, but the communal showers and toilets are always spotless and there are a lot of them, so you don't have to wait in line.. ;) Casa Zen is close to the beach (1 minute), but if you want to surf, the better spots are 10-15 minutes walking distance. If you don't feel like surfing, you can just relax in one of the hammocks on the wonderful Yoga-Deck! You can do daily Yoga classes there as well, which are really nice, too!
Though the restaurant of Casa Zen closed recently, you don't have to worry about getting enough to eat. There are a number of great places around ("Casa del Mar" has great barbecue, "Rancho Burger" serves delicious fish and other dishes) and you can use the former restaurant kitchen as a communal kitchen now, so that's really well equipped.
We stayed at Casa Zen for a whole week (extended twice, because it was just so nice!) and would definitely recommend the place to anyone, who looks for a friendly, nice and clean place in Santa Teresa!

Nice place near the beach, but constricting rules. They have yoga classes daily, WIFI, and free breakfast of fruits and toast. A community kitchen and fridge. Bring your own lock for the safe. Pretty basic rooms just beds and a fan, but peaceful. 3 showers (no hot water) and a few more bathrooms. Hammocks in the garden area, but they were wet, and a reading area with a pretty big book collective. $25 a night for two twin beds. Not bad. Staff/Owners could be more friendly.
