“Charming location with amazing food”
Reviewed February 1, 2014

long after the pavement ended down a bumpy and pitted dirt road on the very outskirts of Santa Teresa my wife and I discovered Restaurante Tapas at the El Rey Patricio hotel/cabanas. Vanessa, a Spanish expat is one of the owners and she waited on us with the kind of hospitality one would expect at a close friend's dinner party. She was charming and informative, she helped us decide on dishes perfect for us making lovely conversation amid a red and lavender sky as the sun dipped into the ocean before our eyes in a magical sunset.
The location is quaint and unassuming overlooking the ocean at the far end of Santa Teresa. The open air seating under a beautiful towering thatched roof is romantic and comfortable.
We began with sangria which was refreshing and delicious and took the edge off as the heat from the day began to wan.
Then the small plates began arriving and we were wooed by each and dish as if it just couldn't get any better but, it did. First was chicken croquettas which were golden brown on the outside and wonderfully light gooey, cheesy goodness inside, just scrumptious. Then iberico sausage over white beans with a delicious white sauce that was just enough to compliment and balance this hearty combination. And finally the chorizo stuffed tortilla was delicate and spicy while still having a creaminess that made for one of those dishes that I will never forget as it was simply perfection.
We could have stopped there as these dishes were filling but we had ordered the Sea Bass entree and it arrived to the table like clockwork as a generous portion of pan fried sea bass with a crispy skin and moist flaky meat. Also simply prepared to perfection. Our eyes rolled with every bite and although we were full, we ate every bit of this delicious fish.
This food was simple and inspired in a setting that feels like a dream
We have three nights left in Santa Teresa and I know one of them will find us dining back at Restaurante Tapas... maybe more.

“A bit of Spain in Costa Rica!”
Reviewed January 28, 2014

We absolutely enjoyed the food, ambiance and did I mention the food?! We had chicken croquettes and sausage with white beans for tapas and the mixed paella for dinner. It was all delicious! The paella is exactly as I remember it to be in Spain and the tapas selection was pretty good. The white beans that come with the sausage tapas were indescribably delectable! We will definitely go back!

“Extra ordinary location & best tapas & fish”
Reviewed January 25, 2014

The perfect place:
The special location 50m above the beach provides a certain calmness. Vanessa & Ramon, a friendly spanish couple that drives El Rey have the ability to create a warm & welcoming atmosphere. My girlfriend and stayed in the hotel as well an d we had the best time of our holiday. The food is delicious, special and always fresh. These guys love what they do and you realize it every day. Even Mel Gibson passes by from time to time to have a nice dinner with his friends at Vanessa & Ramon`s Restaurante..
