Me and my wife stayed there in january for a couple of days. The owner asked us to write a review on this platform. I just don´t know why?
First of all, it´s a surf camp, not a hotel as written on their homepage. The 4 rooms they offer, are a kind of dorm rooms for 4 people and they are much too close to the unpaved and very dusty road (apx. 40 to 50 ft). Because of this it´s very noisy and extremely, unhealthy dusty all day and night long. The backyard of their rooms looks terrible.
Although it´s called a Beachfront Hotel, you can´t see or hear the ocean from the rooms. What you see is just the dusty road and the ugly backyard.
Next thing is, there is no privacy at all. Lying in your bed you have to look directly to one of the beds of your immediate neighbor room if doors are opened. We didn´t like this situation. The walkway to the beach, the bar and restaurant is passing by right in front of the rooms. From there you can look or even grab right through the window into the room. People are passing by all day and night long. It was terrible!
The mattresses seemed not to be changed since years. They smelled sourly. Disgustingl
One night there was a party at the beach bar and hundreds of people passed by till 6 am! Very loud techno music. Impossible to sleep. They broke in in one of the neighbor rooms and several things got stolen. Realy scary!
Our points of view regarding the "hotel" are for sure completely different to the austrian owner´s one. They are different in every sense we found out during our stay. From a certain time on also because of this everything got a kind of strange vibe for us. Worse luck.
But the beachfront garden is nice. Two surf spots are roughly 15 min walk away.
You can't swim at their beachfront. It´s too rocky and there are very strong currents. It´s fine at low tide.
All in all … not for everybody … nothing for us.

first off all that review feels like someone wants to damage our image. we never had a client with this name last year. then why doing a review one year later ???? also we had no break in last year in january !!! that's an absolout LIE !!!!! our rooms are also no dormstyle rooms. dust problem had everyone in st.teresa cause of that road but meanwhile they paved and there is no dust anymore !!!! with the backyard you probably mean my neighbores property where i have absolut NO influence to change anything. usually peopel look into the tropical green front yard !!! and not back into the neighbores yard !!! also you can hear the ocean from the property and you can see the ocean cause we are right infront.!!!! how you can't see it ???? and the swimming is the best in whole st.teresa on low tide infront of our place !!!
if you check my other reviews no one complains about that what this person invents. sorry but it seems more that you have been in someone elses property !!!!!!!!!!!

My husband and I stayed here for 4 nights and loved it! Peter and his family are so welcoming! We stayed in an upper level cabina. Hot water and cold air! We even had a holiday cat that visited us often! We tried surfing for the first time and Peter is a great coach! I highly recommend this wonderful place! His dogs, Ghandi and Luna were also so friendly! We will return!

We have been to Mal Pais/Santa Theresa 4 times last 6 years. This is by far one of the best places to visit and stay. Always loved the Brazilian food in Rancho Itauna and best services in town. Didn't stay there until our last trip in Dec 2012 (hard to get a reservation as it's always booked!), which we decided to have our destination wedding on the beach at Rancho Itauna. Peter, the host, was wonderful who was the DJ for the receiption, built and set the arbor on the beach, and referred us great chef (Glenn) and photographer (Diana) for the wedding ceremony and reception. We had the beach ourselves for the entire afternoon/night! I was nervous how it would turn out as I am organizing everything remotely; however, it turned out so perfect and definitley my dream wedding that I won't change a bit of it. The beach is so relaxing and facing the sunset. The food was excellent and the bartenders just won't stop serving us drinks. The bills are very reasonable (much cheaper in the state) and the rooms are comfortable. My guests all gave thumbs up and some of them went to surfing the next morning or just stayed on the beach for the rest of day. We all had a great time. Can't say enough about this place. Oh, forgot to mention that this is the place to go during New Year's Eve where it has the biggest bonfire in town as it's Peter's birthday. Always a big celebration. The entire town people will be there dancing, drinking, and celebrating. Thank you, Rancho Itauna, for a great memory. We for sure will be back soon!

What a nice way to end our trip in Costa Rica in that clean, big and comfortable cabina. And with our own kitchen, we were able to prepare great food and eat facing the beautiful beach.

Not too far from the surf spots, the waves were great (late August), and the temperature perfect. And after the surf, yoga time on that great platform facing the sea!

Great place for a couple, but for friends too for sure.
Enjoy your trip!

We could not have asked for a better location - Ranchos Itauna is THE bargain stay on the beach!

Our four nights in Peter's cabina were unforgettable! The room was clean and secure with thoughtfully equipped kitchenette to make our stay even more at home. It also has air-conditioning and a nice mattress which was great for me since my back was hurting, but I slept so soundly and woke up refreshed, ready to take my coffee to the beach. Every morning we woke up in paradise with birds singing overhead and the soothing waves from the ocean off in the distance. The high-speed IT access in our room worked great which made it easy for us to stay in touch with home. There is also parking on the property which is secured by the giant gate at night. I also liked the rancho for yoga or evening meditation, or the hammocks on the beach for just reading and lounging during the day. We had a car, but everything was literally an easy five minute walk from the property, including groceries. Peter and family are lovely and great hosts with helpful staff always there in case you need anything...but really, with the setting at Itauna, the amazing sunsets on the beach and easy access to everything we needed, we were quite content and could have easily stayed for another week! A definite for anyone looking for a perfect stay on the beach in Santa Teresa!

Ranchos Itauna WITHOUT DOUBT is the best deal on the beach. The property is beautiful, nice shady beachfront, awesome sunsets, a little "private" bay with low-tide rock pools, near the main surf points....excellent food, excellent attention. Peter and Fatima the owners will certainly look after you. The Cabinas are clean, well equipped and spacious...great stay for families and individuals alike. Forget the rest and head straight here.

Room Tip: all the cabins can sleep up to 4/5 people. Some even equipped for self-catering.
