“Can I just Live Here?”
Reviewed February 18, 2014

We had such an amazing time at El Rey Patricio. The hotel is a little outside of town, which is the way a like it! It gives you a feeling of seclusion and a more genuine, personable, and unique experience. The beach is about 50 feet from the hotel which was nice for a nighttime stargazing session on the beach. We had one of the romantic rooms which was perfect. It was a little small, but had an open air concept with an entire wall that could open up with folding doors to a little deck with a shower, hammock, and ocean views. Everyday we ate a complimentary breakfast that was provided for us and Vanessa and Ramon were eager to answer my many questions on what to do in the area and even reserved a tour for us to Isla Tortuga. The hotel was clean, the service was perfect and personable, and every one of our needs was accommodated. The hotel is very small, and the staff consists of four people so by the end of our trip we felt like we were part of the family.

Besides that, in descending order here are my Top 3 favorite aspects of Hotel Rey Patricio

3) Playa Hermosa - The Hotel is located right next to Playa Hermosa, which is in my opinion the best beach in Mal Pais. It's big, the waves are the perfect size, the sand is soft, and because its not in the center of Santa Teresa it's not that crowded. The beach is so big that even if it was crowded it wouldn't feel like it. And best of all it is aptly named . . .It is Hermosa! Do yourself a favor and spend most of your beach time at Hermosa instead of the other beaches. Maybe break your day up with lunch at Roca Mar or a sunset viewing at Banana Beach which are both more centrally located. Also the famous playa hermosa tide pools are right in front of the hotel. Vanessa and Ramon are happy to lend you a snorkeling mask to explore this vast array of tide pools.

2) Tapas Restaurant - The food at El Rey Patricio is amazing. Ramon is one of the owners and the chef. He has no kitchen staff and does it all alone and the product is gourmet yet affordable! We ate here 2 out of our 3 nights and I honestly wish we could have had another night there just to sample some more of the menu. The croquettes were better than any I had while in Spain, the chorizo amazing, and the Sangria perfect among many others. Without a doubt the BEST food we ate in Costa Rica.

1) Vanessa y Ramon - Any experience is so much better when you feel a personal connection with the people involved with it. It didn't seem like Vanessa and Ramon put any effort into accommodating all of our needs, getting to know us, and making our trip an amazing experience because that is just them being themselves. Everything about them and the experience they curate is 100% genuine and natural. They are also downright inspiring. Do yourself a favor and ask them how they made it from Spain to Santa Teresa and it will inspire you want to drop everything, runaway with your love, and live your life happy, healthy and surrounded by beauty.

Do yourself a favor and stay at El Rey Patricio

I'm so glad my girlfriend found this place on our trip to Costa Rica. We went for my cousins wedding, but showed up days before and I'm so glad we did. Vanessa and Ramon are two of the nicest people I have met and they made our stay truely memorable. The views from our room and dining area were the best I saw on the trip. Tucked up on the hill you had beautiful trees around you and the surf was loud enough to gently put you to sleep. And the food! Oh my the food was the best part of it all! Not pricey and perfectly portioned, its as if they knew it was just for you. I loved my time there and am definitely going back to visit them. Well worth every penny. Why stay anywhere else?

We were in Santa Teresa and had an amazing stay at this lovely hotel. The owners are incredibly friendly and helpful, the place super romantic and the room, despite small size, very clean. We loved it! Only tip - probably for couples who have been going out for a while - there is no privacy! :)

Absolutely gorgeous tapas a la Spanish chef, beautiful sunsets from the restaurant and from the hotel room, clean hotel, helpful and friendly service, near to Playa Hermosa with good surfing waves. I fell in love with this place. It's relaxing and not too close to the centre of Santa Teresa (5 km). Closest store is only 2 km away.

The perfect place to relax.
The tropical location 50m above the beach provides a certain calmness to come down & relax. El Rey is located a little bit outside Santa Teresa & away from the busy downtown life. The nature and the garden is well fostered. A lot of nice birds and some squirrels are daily visitors. Vanessa & Ramon, a friendly spanish couple that drives El Rey, have the ability to create a warm & welcoming atmosphere, which makes you feel like home. These guys love what they do and you realize it every day. My girlfriend and stayed in the hotel 1 week and we had the best time of our holiday. Rooms are clean and well equipped with warm shower, a good bed, hammock & ocean view. Ramon is very good cook, the food is delicious, special and always fresh. Even Mel Gibson passes by from time to time to have a nice dinner with his friends at Vanessa & Ramon`s Restaurante. From a surfing prospective, El Rey is is the perfect destination, as you have a lot of breaks, like Playa Hermosa near by. Vanessa & Ramon are always helpful and give a lot of tips, where to go and when.
When you around, stay in Hotel el Rey, you will love it.
We will come back!

Room Tip: Every room is perfect.

We stayed at this place for 5 nights. Great view from the restaurant, great service in the morning both with the food, and with booking activities. And the dinner, especially the mahi mahi is great. Too bad that the aircon did not work, and that we found some big cocroches there. Since this place is located as remote as it is, we chose to dinner there a couple of times. Even though the owners were great and serviceminded during the daytime, we felt that they prioritized external dinner guests at night time. One night we had to wait 15 minutes even before a menu was presented to us. Then we were told that it would take a while because a party of 10 people suddenly showed up, waiting to be served. Made us feel like secondary costumers, that is not very professesional. They should hire some more help at nights like that. If they could do what we have complained about here better, the place would be great.

Querida Hege,

My wife, our 11 month old and I stayed here and rented the family bungalow for 8 days in December. Was truly a special place. Location was great...directly across from nice little beach and tidepools that we enjoyed exploring. Surfed playa Hermosa (a 10 minute walk) everyday and rented a board from the hotel. Beautiful sunsets at dinner, excellent food (chef/propreitor Ramon even cooked up the Mahi mahi I caught deep sea fishing for two of our dinners) breakfasts were included and had unlimited coffee! Close enough to the hustle and bustle of town (a few kilometers to Santa Teresa) but nice privacy and atmosphere so as to make it perfect for our family. Finally, the owners Ramon y Vanessa are some of the nicest people (and hosts) we've met. They really welcomed us and made the stay perfect. We will return in future years!

Room Tip: The family bungalow was simple but great. Fell asleep listening to the waves every night!
