“delicious, elegant, if pricey fare”
Reviewed April 14, 2014

this restaurant is located in the super hip new el mangrove hotel, and like the rest of the resort, it has a modern, relaed yet very stylish vibe. the menu is ambitious and sophisticated and the food is delicious--the short ribs were the best i've ever had, and all the dishes we tried, from the pasta with duck ragout to the sirloin to the fresh mozzarella and proscuitto salad, were first rate in terms of execution and presentation. the ourdoor seating area is a bit more tropical and relaxed than the sterile looking glass box that represents the "inside" part of the restaurant though if you fear mosquitos you may want to book indoors. the service is warm and welcoming and they really seem to care about the experience you are having. it is by no means a cheap meal, more like NYC prices, but everything is done beautifully so if you have done your research and know what kind of pricing to expect, you will likely be very happy.

“Excellent food, beautiful setting”

We had a great meal here. There is a formal, white tablecloth indoor restaurant which looked lovely but was not in keeping with our idea of a vacation meal. We had the same food outdoors, overlooking the pool and ocean.

“Chic atmosphere, excellent food and service”
Reviewed February 27, 2014

Hubby and I had dinner at Makako last night and were delighted with this new find. The restaurant would easily be a contender in a large U.S. metropolitan area on ambience alone. Tables were beautifully appointed, and the lighting by the adjacent pool was almost ethereal with foot-tall egg-shaped orbs on the ground which emitted a soft glow and warmth to the scene. The long narrow pool, flanked by lovely wooden lounge chairs and soft white cabanas added even more to the ambience. Service was attentive without hovering. We had garden salads, sea bass, mahi mahi, creamed spinach and two glasses of wine. The fish was moist and flaky - probably prepared better than any fish we have had in a long time. Sides are ordered separately from entrees. Wine was not listed on the bar menu - had we known that two glasses would be almost $22, we probably would not have ordered wine. Bread served in a basket consisted of tiny rolls that looked almost like flower blossoms - butter was served in a tiny white ceramic "box" - very appealing visually as well as being delicious. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and look forward to a return visit. We enjoyed visiting with server Liz, who made us feel very welcomed.
