Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo
Ranked #2 of 13 Hotels in Gulf of Papagayo
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed August 6, 2013

This was my fifth visit to a Four Seasons resort, but my first to this location. The room was beautiful and very clean, with all the expected comforts. There are several restaurant options, and the food is good but not as terrific as some of their other locations. They also have a beachside dinner, but beware of the many raccoon-like creatures which will try and grab food. The resort is unique since it is on a peninsula and thus has the benefit of two different beaches. The beach service was very good. Although I did not have children with me, the hotel seemed very child friendly with a nice kids club and activities. The golf course was great, but a little pricey and surprisingly closed on both Sunday and Mondays. Overall, I liked it and would return in the future (only a 4.5hr direct flight from Chicago).

Dear CJ, I am glad you want to come back, and bring your children this time, I promise they will have a blast with all the great activities we have for them all year long! The closure of the golf course on those days is only temporary due to the Green Season. It will be open 7 days a week as of November. I hope you start making plans! The Four Seasons Costa Rica is one of my favorite hotels in the world. The setting is breathtaking, relaxing and unique. Since the hotel is on a peninsula there are beaches on both sides of the property which offer a different feel without leaving the property. There are multiple pools to serve the same purpose, each of which is fantastic. The food at the hotel is four stars, but like all Four Seasons usually comes in at 5 star prices. There are a number of restaurants so the variety helps with a longer stay. We stayed in a 3 bedroom villa with a top of the line kitchen, large living room, dining room, office area, laundry facilities, and 3 full baths, together with a large screened porch overlooking the water. There are plenty of activities available to guests without additional cost (paddle boarding, kayaks, snorkeling, paddle boats, and games) and off campus activities that are organized by the hotel (horseback riding, zip lining, rock climbing and hiking) all of which were great fun. The lobby areas and hotel grounds are meticulously maintained and beautiful. There are a number of running, walking and hiking trails that offer great views. The only bad part about this Four Seasons is paying the bill :) and leaving. Take this trip and you will not regret it.

It is what you expect from the Four Seasons from start to finish.
We were greeted warmly and told we could check in the next day so that we could start enjoying our holiday immediately.  Very nice!
We had a Cielo Room with a view of Snake Bay.  It was spacious with a large screened in terrace.
We ate at all the restaurants in the resort.  All Very Good or Excellent.
Our favourite time of day was Happy Hour watching the sunset enjoying Pineapple Mojitos!
Chef's Table Dinner - One of the best dining experiences we ever had.  Chef Felipe Alvear welcomed us into the kitchen where we had a private table for two with a view of the entire kitchen.  He surprised us with 4 courses and complementing wines.  Pastry Chef Yudith made our dessert in front of us; truly SPECTACULAR.
Fantastic Golf!  This is an Arnold Palmer course and it is BEAUTIFUL!  You do not fully appreciate the beauty of this resort unless you go on the golf course; you can do so on weekdays on the "Great Giants Tour"
Special mention to Jesse, the golf pro, George Enrique & Maxwell our poolside servers.  They were amazing!!!

I traveled here with a party of 8-2grandparents ,2 parents & 4 grandchildren ages 12, 9, 7& 4.We stayed in a lovely 3 bedroom residence with all the amenities of home.
The resort is beautiful, the service unbeatable, the food delicious & very family friendly. Since the resort is off the beaten path, it is almost impossible to venture out for meals without a car. Therefore we had our pickup service stop at a grocery to buy breakfast food & snacks. As mentioned in previous reviews the food is very pricey- everything is ala carte.
Some highlights for me:
Marea(the restaurant at the beach club) was fabulous.
The service at the pool was very attentive. Little extras like free samples of smoothies, free sunglass cleaning, & a guy dressed like he was shipwrecked serving cold coconut juice in coconuts.
The whole family enjoyed the free golf course tour.
Since a service charge is added to your bill you don`t feel obligated to tip for every service like the golf cart drivers who transport you to & from your room.
DiMare & Congo were good dining experiences. The only disappointment was Papagayo for dinner & breakfast. The Tico Bar was good for dinner also. (As a personal preference I prefer to dine inside in air conditioning on hot, humid days/nights away from flies & mosquitoes).
All & all I would highly recommend this resort.

We had such an enjoyable time at the Four Seasons. There were so many things to do on the property itself that we only left once for an excursion and decided to spend the rest of our time at the resort. We stayed in a canopy suite which was worth it. The bathrooms are very big and you can open your doors at night and wake up listening to the ocean waves crashing and the tropical birds chirping. I would recommend that everyone take advantage of the free activities - this includes the bay tour (where we had the opportunity to see dolphins swim with us), tour of the giants (golf course tour), mixology class (make real fresh fruit mojitos and drink them) and much much more. At the pool and the beach you are served complimentary smoothie shots and coconut water. The staff is very pleasant and friendly. The only restaurant that I did not care for was Di Mare - Italian fare that was average in my opinion. My favorite was Caracol (the steak house) - one of my best meals ever! Traveled with my husband and two boys (ages 10 and 7). We were sad to leave.

Dear Simi, I love the fact that you had the opportunity to try our activities. Our staff is always looking for ways to entertain our guest and make the best out of our resources and beautiful property; and knowing that guests enjoy them is the best reward we can ask for. Thank you also for your kind words about Caracol. I’m sorry your experience at Di Mare was not as exceptional as we would have hoped. We hope to see you again in Costa Rica! Regards, Pascal Forotti, General Manager.

My husband and I visited the resort for 8 days in July. We have stayed at a few other Four Seasons resorts and found this property to be just as we expected with very similar included amenities and consistent food and beverage pricing. After our arrival into Liberia we were picked up by Mainor at Tours your Way, I would highly recommend his service for transportation and any tours you may want to do while in Costa Rica! A very nice 30 minute ride and we were on the very beautiful and very lush Four Seasons grounds.

Property/Rooms:

Stunning resort, very well laid out, everything very central while still offering a lot of places to get away into semi-seclusion. The restaurants were all centrally located with the lobby, gym, and pools very close by. We stayed in building 2 and thought it was great, the location was perfect, the rooms very spacious, beds very comfortable, and the rooms were relatively quiet. We had complimentary bottled water in the room replaced everyday.

Beaches/Amenities:

The beaches were very different but offered great amenities, we took advantage of the Kayaks and a kayak tour to Monkey Head Island offered by the resort. The guys helping with the water activities were really wonderful to all of the guests. We also enjoyed the sunset activities on the beach where they have live music and drinks available at a slight discount.

Restaurants/Bars:

We found the food at every single restaurant to be delicious, we are also "foodies" so we tend to like more upscale pairings and interesting items. If more simple things are your taste just let the restaurant know because they really can make you anything. We also found the prices to be very reasonable. For Example, Tico's - we loved it here great outdoor bar with delicious drinks and sushi, oh my god the sushi. Prices for cocktails were about $14/16 and wine $12 - 16. Sushi rolls around $18 - $20. They also had lighter appetizer items. We spent a few nights enjoying the view and the space. Another positive is that you can order off of the Ticos, Papaguyo, or Di Mare menu dinner OR lunch anytime you want as long as the restaurants are open. We also enjoyed Marea and Caracoal very much. We never tried Di Mare or Congo's for dinner (we did do Congo's for lunch and thought it was excellent). Lunch by the pool was always very promptly delivered and extremely good.

Spa:

We both had really great massages here so of course I'm going to recommend going in for a treat!!! The facilities were also great with plunge pools and a sauna you can use at any time.

Overall we really enjoyed our time here and felt that even without leaving the resort for 8 days we had plenty to do. We took part in some of the hikes, kayak tours, and the trail of giants tour which was great - be sure to ask for the weeks activity program when you get there and book everything early! We also had great weather with only 1 full day of gloomy rain the entire week, with a brief rain on 1/2 of the day we arrived. We spent a lot of time at the quiet pool and loved that the stations each provided flavored water, sunscreen, bug spray, and cool face mist.

The staff was amazing, unobtrusive but always watching to see if the guests needed anything, and were very attentive. I got the feeling that the culture moves much slower and leisurely than some of us, but it was a welcome change of pace!!

Room Tip: 2303 was great!

We visited for 10 days in June. This is supposed to be the rainy season, but it only rained 2 days during our visit.

Lodging -
We were in a two bedroom with a plunge pool. The room/house was absolutely amazing. The plunge pool was much larger than I expected! Great patio spaces! We had a full kitchen which was nice to bring some light food items from local grocery store.

Food-
Great breakfast buffet at main restaurant. You do have to dodge the occasional bird with it being open air. Caracol is always good. Had good steaks there for dinner one night. We also did the catch of the day one night for dinner. We picked some red snapper that they prepared for us at Papagayo that evening. I had my fish blackened and it was excellent.

Overall- Just an incredible resort! This was our third visit and it just continues to get better each year. We will definitely be back again soon!
