If you've been to Costa Rica, you know what to expect. If not, read on....The taxi ride from the airport (LIR) to the resort is 30 min, you can talk them down to 30 or 40 bucks. The resort is ISOLATED and VERY hilly. Get any drinks or snacks before you arrive; a van that runs approx every 10 min will help with the hills. There is no ATM machine and the nearest one is miles away. Plan well, only a small gift shop near the front desk. The resort is on a bay, calm murky water but a quick free day trip to a different beach, offers a chance for snorkeling. If you do run out of money, take the day trip to Coco beach; your going to spent 30 bucks either way, so why waist the time in a cab. Cell phone: we have Sprint.........No signal. I heard AT&T works but I don't know that for sure. Internet: the other review are accurate. TV 6 or 7 U.S. channels CNN FNC ESPN and some local Miami stations. Enjoy.....

Room Tip: Get any thing close to the pool....

After reading all of the negative postings we were also a little apprehensive about this hotel , although realistic as we have travelled to many other similar destinations. We enjoyed every minute of our holiday, spending some days at the hotel and some on excursions. The highlight of my day was to get up early to explore.Every day I discovered something different on the beach or in the sea,if you enjoy wildlife it is an amazing location.
We had no problem with the rooms but the bathrooms were desperately in need of modernisation. On one occassion we had dinner with the manager so had the opportunity to give him our comments.Based in block 5 it was just perfect for us, a bit of a steep walk but such wonderful views across the sea.Very quiet at night time too.
The food was as expected for a buffet, always a great selection and plenty for all even considering the hotel was totally packed for the Easter weekend break. We do not believe in giving large tips at the beginning of the holiday to get preferential treatment, as most of the Canadians appeared to do, so the table service was poor. However as you can help yourself to all drinks it really wasn't an issue for us.I will only reward after good service.
There were always plenty of sunbeds despite the Canadians getting up extremely early to put their towels on! I only managed to beat them once getting there at 5.30 am!
It was a truly amazing country and we will definately be returning.

You can't beat the weather to start with. We both enjoyed our trip and would go back if the price was reasonable. The bartenders went out of their way to accommodate Virginia and I and a special thanks to Jimmy who bent over backwards to make our stay enjoyable. He is part of the kitchen staff and if you're there ask to meet him. A couple things I might mention is there is a huge cement drainage ditch that surrounds all buildings and the edge should be painted with a bright orange line so people know it's there. We arrived at our unit at night and my wife took 15 steps out of unit and fell into the ditch scrapping both knees, shoulder and head quite badly. No pool for her for the first 3 days. Still has marks on her knees and shoulder. We also had lots of ants on our balcony and some in our room. We called and the maids came and sprayed. I figure that comes with the territory. The last three days just happened to be their national holiday so the hotel was booked with the Tico's ( locals ) There were lineups for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The general quality of food was changed dramatically for the worst. The pool was full and forget the swim up bar because you could hardly get near it. They even changed the towels to a lower grade and I mean lower for those 3 days. Had we known about this we would have booked away excurtions for those days. If you want drinks after 1:00 am you should make sure you buy whatever your fancy at the duty free on the way down or get to know Jimmy. We rented a car and found it easy to get around - just be cautious of driving at night (no lights, steep hills and turns and even cows out to graze along the side of the road!) Our tour guide Jean Paul with Nolitours was very little help for us even when my wife spoke to him about her fall and suggested he add mentioning the ditches in his welcome speech on the shuttle to the hotel. If he had, the fall would not have happened. We would still go back like I said earlier if the price was very reasonable.

Stayed here with a friend 5th-12th April and just loved the location of this hotel. The scenery was stunning and the abundant wildlife a joy especially whilst enjoying the charming natural beach. The location is remote but being isolated was part of the attraction and guaranteed wildlife.

However, we were really concerned at the ignorance of most visitors regarding wild animals. There are notices stating not to feed the animals which went unheeded. Do these people who profess to care for wild creatures have no sense? They feed the monkeys with bananas etc which are not part of their natural diet so can harm or even kill them over time. Also, monkey genes are so close to ours that by feeding them you can pass on human diseases which can be fatal. Come on people, is that photo really worth the life of that creature? If you really care and want these animals to survive watch from a distance and if you really can't resist handling and feeding then there is a lovely dog living on the beach who is in need of food and is very gentle and loving! (She will even escort you on a beach walk).

Check-in was done on the coach transfer - a brilliant time saving idea. Until acclimatised to the heat and humidity I would suggest using the frequent shuttle busses.

The first room we were given was in block 15 near the pool. It was dark and overlooked the riffle range so was a bit disappointing. At the bellboys suggestion I called reception & asked if they had any other rooms available with a view. I was instantly reallocated a room in block 5 half way up the hill and this met our expectations. The safe we hired however was hanging off its hinges but one phone call and it was promptly mended. They recommend leaving the aircon on 24/7. It is effective and also keeps mosquitoes at bay. The beds were very comfortable.

The staff were lovely and worked very hard. They were somewhat short on numbers in the bars and buffet especially when the locals flooded in at the weekend. The staff were quite stressed during this time because many locals were rude and seemed unaware of queues demanding drinks instantly from the poor bar staff who had to respond to who shouted the loudest!!

Standards of cleanliness were good and our room was kept fresh. We left our maid a daily tip and treat (make up, perfume, jewellery etc) which seemed appreciated. Fresh coffee was left daily.

Certain areas are in need of a facelift, particularly the pool which is a little battle scarred but it's not a major deal. Staff hygiene standards were also high with visible hand washing at bars etc. Food was good and pleniful with beautiful fresh fruit and salads. I had read on Trip Advisor that not much fish was available but I think we enjoyed fresh fish every day bar 1. We, and no one we met, had any tummy troubles. We ate at the Italian A La Carte twice and enjoyed it, a nice change from the buffet.
Drinks were good but the quality of the wine did go down at the weekend.

The beach club was worth the faffing around with boats - a super beach, uncrowded and again lots of wildlife to entertain you. The snack bar there is very limited so if you don't like junk food (hot dogs etc) you will need to fuel up at breakfast time.

We knew through research that trips would be expensive so were prepared and thoroughly enjoyed those we did. We booked with hotelbeds & the Canopy tour of the cloud forest is a long day out but with informative guide and lots to see should not be missed. The half day river trip also revealed an array of wildlife and we topped our stay with zip lining at a local centre where the final lines (11 in all) crossed the river full of crocodiles - exhilarating!

There is one small shop on site, yes a bit pricey but convenient if not planning to go to shopping areas. There is a small duty free at the airport - limited choice but real bargains to be had on a few drinks.

I would definitely return to Costa Rica and I would not hesitate in choosing this hotel again. Sadly, it appears Thomson/First choice have dropped Costa Rica from their future destinations!

Tips : Bring a thermal mug (the bar staff are quite happy to fill them)
Bring plenty of high factor sunscreen
Binoculars are a must
Only bother to bring US$

I went April 18th-25th and left pretty disappointed. Our room was pretty standard although the grout in the bathroom was dirty. The group I travelled had three rooms and the issue with the bathroom was the same for all of them. Maid service was sub-standard with minimal cleaning. The bar fridge was re-stocked once during our entire seven day stay. Other members of our party phoned twice as their fridge had not been re-stocked and were told it would be taken are of. It was not. The Nolitours representative Jean-Claude was of very little use and provided little information other than to warn us not to book tours with anyone but Nolitours. We booked four tours, none of them with Nolitours and they were enjoyable. We booked a visit to Arenal volcano through TAM (see Edgar in the lobby) and two meals were provided at very nice restaurants and a dip in hot springs at a beautiful spa.
There is a pool bar and one central bar. We didn't use the pool bar but the central bar proved to be quite frustrating as the staff were either too busy to meet demand or in some cases disinterested in serving clients. That being said there were some excellent staff who went out of their way to provide courteous service.
The beach was a black sand beach and not overly clean. There was no bar, or thatched huts. White faced monkeys were fairly friendly and came to the beach on a regular basis. It was a real treat watching them interact with eachother and they would come within metres of people on the beach. If you are going for a vacation to spend lots of time at the beach this is not the spot for you. The pool was fairly large and although I didn't use too much, people seemed to be fully enjoying it.

Food choices were a bit limited but what they did have was fairly tasty. I only went to one a la carte (Italian) and unfortunately my fish was largely undercooked. I wasn't too bothered however as i had filled-up on a very nice salad bar. The service at the a la carte was very good.
Be prepared to do a lot of up-hill walking just because of the lay-out of the hotel. We were fortunate in that our building was at the lower end of the hotel close to the pool and beach. The major problem with that however was that music was played very loudly until 11:00 pm each night. It was not possible for me to fall asleep until the noise stopped. I appreciate the efforts at entertaining guests but the noise level was over the top, and should have probably ended by 10:00 anyway.

This vacation was a wonderful one but not because of the hotel rather Costa Rica itself is beautiful. The tours we booked (ATV and zip-lining, snorkelling, Coco beach and visit to Arenal volcano) are what made the vacation for me. This hotel does not come close to deserving a rating of 4. We obtained a really good price however by waiting to book about two weeks prior so it lessened the disappointment.

Everything is a question of expectations and I have to say that Allegro Papagayo was exactly what we were looking for. In the middle of a natural park, away from noise and beautiful nature. It was amazing....the resort itself is nice, food is really good and varied. Accomodations is nice, air con efficient. Yes, you might find few red ants here and there but you are in the middle of the jungle. the swimmimg pool very nice and well maintained. The staffs are really good and deserve lots of praise......
the most amazing is the nature. Cappucci monkey come to the hotel beach nearly every day and it is a pleasure to feed by hand. they are lovely and curisous. Some of them even grab your finger like babies. the birds are beautiful, colourful. The raccon family is living around, you will normally see them at night by the swimming pool. They ate bananas from our hand, amazing....turtles are coming to the beach to put down their eggs, unfortunately, it was not the right season....
If you want to be close to the nature, this a perfect place.
The hotel beach is volcanic black sand, unusual and beautiful. you can also take the free boat to go the white sand beach, beautiful, wild..... If you go to the jungle, just take your insect repellant as there are a lot of black little flies that bites like crazy....
The resort is very well place to go and discover beautiful beaches. You could visit 10 of them during the same day. We rented a car and went around a little bit.... Playa Co0nchal is amazing, but there are so many of them.....
If youn expect to go to town wevery night, this is not the right hotel. If you want to be close to nature, then this where you need to go....
It was my best holidays ever. We even visited Nicaragua, incredible country and amazing people. We went to Palo Verde, dry forest. You can see crocodiles and birds, a really nice trip. Sandra the Thompson rep is fantastic, really. Nothing is too much trouble and she is always helpful and smiley.
the animation team is really good, always something going on. their sdancing shows at nnight are really cool...
The sun is very powerful and we took our first sun burn at 7AM on the first day. Just put oncream and expect to be hot form early morning...
We normally never go twice at the same place but for the first time, we would both be happy to go back.
The organisation with Thompson First Choice was First Class...
I could go on forever.
Thanks to everybody there
also please amke sure you feed the dog on the beach. she is an angel, so gentle.....
So pack your bag and go, very good value for money and memorable holidays.
Jerome

We just returned from a week stay at this resort. WE LOVED IT!! Yes, it does need some updating. Yes, the AC leaked a bit. Yes, we had a little problem with our safe. BUT overall, this resort was an amazing place for our vacation. The workers and travelers we met during our trip and the spectacular views WAAAYYY overcompensated for the slight issues we had. Also, the food was very good--no complaints in that department!

Edgar at TAM (they have an office just off the lobby) helped us set up a trip to the Arenal Volcano (HIGHLY recommend this trip. However, if you get carsick, consider taking medication. It's about a 3.5 hr trip each way and a lot of it is winding through the mountain roads.) We also had the pleasure of taking a shuttle ride with Jose from TAM-what a treat!! He had so many stories and things to tell us--made our drive go that much faster!

It costs about $70 to take a taxi to Coco Beach, so if you can find somebody to share the fare with, it helps, but if not, I would still recommend doing it. Such a cute little town with an amazing location on the beach.

Take advantage of the short boat ride to the beach club at this resort (included). It is beautiful! The water temperature over there had to be almost 90 degrees! And the water was so clear and pretty! If you have your own snorkel gear, I would bring it. That's one thing I wish we would have brought along.

The entertainment staff does a great job involving everybody in the daily activities they put on there: pool volleyball, salsa lessons, water aerobics, zumba, beach volleyball, etc. There is always something going on! One night they had an awesome beach party!! Dancing and drinks on the beach--soooo fun! Don't miss the shows they put on at night--they do such a great job. Not to mention, they work all day entertaining everybody--and then to dance and perform at night-wow!

We also were so thrilled to see the white-faced monkeys on the beach in the mornings (and sometimes in the afternoons too!!). They were sooo cute. DO NOT FEED THEM though...although tempting, human bacteria is apparently very harmful to them. (Learned that on our guided rainforest walk from our guide, Alberto) Also, the big iguanas lounging around the resort were cool to see.

Have Javier at Pablo's Bar make your drinks...he is so wonderful and makes a good drink. We ended up tipping him $20 on our last night for his superior service, and he was so grateful-he almost had tears in his eyes. Bring LOTS of $1 bills to tip these hard working people though--they really appreciate it!

If you are expecting to stay at a resort where you are waited on hand and foot, and pampered beyond belief, this is not the resort for you. If you are going with an optimistic attitude and want to meet nice people and have a great time, this is the place. We traveled as a couple, but saw many families that seemed to be enjoying it just as much.

We will visit this place again in the future. Would recommend it to anybody! Enjoy your vacation!
