“The best and relaxing resort”
Reviewed May 25, 2011

Hopkins Bay resort is the best resort ever and so relaxing i didn't want to leave. Whenever i think of Hopkins and were to stay i think of Hopkins Bay Resort. My son loves the place and the staff there are so loving and kind. The Public relation attitude of the manager is so great that's what keeps me going back there i believe that more resorts should make you feel like your not far away from home and it all starts with the friendliness of their staff and i have to give Hopkins Bay resort #1 in that doing so. Oh my gosh the villas are amazing and so well kept. All i think about when i am there is to enjoy the pool, sleep and drink a nice cold beer or tropical drink. All i can say its the best and keep it up staff with your warm welcome attitude and atmosphere you offer to your clients.

What a fantastic resort! We stumbled across Hopkins Bay Resort on the internet, and boy are we glad we did. The Villa's and grounds are beautiful, and the staff (especially Shawn) were lovely. The restaurant, which is managed by Aaron Holland, not only fed us well but also set up a fantastic day of fishing and snorkeling for us. The entire staff at the Orange Grove was kind enough to prepare our catch, and presented us with an awesome dinner. And not to be forgotten is Desiree at the spa, she gave me the most wonderful massage. This resort is top notch!

We had the best experience at Hopkins Bay Villas and in Hopkins, Belize itself. Danie and Mary are the most gracious hosts; made us feel so at home, welcome and safe. Our villa was beautiful, clean, while simple and comfortable. I would recommend the villas, as well as the town of Hopkins, friendly people and scrumptious food! The sounds of the sea wake you every morning, the staff on site are so friendly and helpful. I would go back in a heartbeat; hope to someday! It was described as a hidden gem by Mary; that describes it best.

Room Tip: email Danie and Mary, or call. Two of the nicest!

Where should I begin... Our stay at the Hopkins Bay Resort was absolutely fantastic!! This was the first time my husband and I had the opportunity to take a vacation without our two year old and Belize/Hopkins was the perfect getaway. We chose to stay at Hopkins Bay based on the reviews we read on TripAdvisor and I'm soooo glad we did. Mary and Dani were the perfect Hosts!! They advised us on travel before our trip and made sure our visit to Belize was more than we could have hoped for--from picking us up at the airport to arranging for some of the most amazing excursions we have ever experienced to recommending CHEF ROBs restaurant (a must if you are in the Hopkins area.) They made us feel as though we had long time friends in a far away land... The Villas at Hopkins Bay Resort have AMAZING views of the ocean, spacious tropical bedrooms and some of the most beautiful wood floors I've ever seen. The Resort staff was super friendly and the restaurant was very good. If you are looking to experience the people and beautiful landscape of Belize-- Hopkins Bay Resort is a great place to go.

We loved Hopkins Bay Villas and will definitely be back! The grounds were beautifully maintained. The villas are top notch - gorgeous granite counter tops in the kitchen (which is fully stocked - coffee maker, toaster, silverware, etc.). Each bedroom is spacious and attached to a private, gorgeous bathroom. The air conditioners work very well - one in each of the 3 bedrooms and one in the main room (kitchen/family room). We opened the doors and allowed the ocean breeze to flow in and it was plenty cool on the main floor. The ocean views are fabulous - everybedroom has one. There are 2 pools on the grounds. The villas are stocked with bath towels and beach towels, which is great. A short drive down the road is the Haminasi Resort. They offer a much less private setting, so I would prefer Hopkins Bay any day over Haminasi. But, it was great that Haminasi is so close because we were able to drive from Hopkins Bay to Haminasi for diving, deep sea fishing, and other excusions. We were told that Haminasi would've driven to Hopkins Bay to pick us up for excursions, but we never did that.
Finally, the village of Hopkins, where Hopkins Bay is located, is full of charming locals. The feel there is very safe - not like Jamaica and other places we have traveled. We walked on foot through Hopkins during the day and at night and never felt unsafe.

I am writing both to review Hopkins Bay Resort and Villas (HBRV) and to make a suggestion to the folks who are considering a trip to this area.

Review - we cannot say enough good things about HBRV. To echo some of the earlier reviewers - lovely setting, beautiful grounds, super pools.

A bit more detail on some points -

1. The villas are really, really first-class .....better than almost anything you will find in the USA at any price range. Great four-poster beds with a big Hunter ceiling fan above each one, not that you need it with the AC. Beautiful floors/countertops and top-class bathrooms with nice toiletries and lots of hot water. Kitchen with big fridge, stove, dishwasher, microwave plus washer and dryer. Nice to be able to make your own coffee, wash some clothes and keep some snacks in the fridge. Custom woodwork and solid walls (not sheetrock) so quiet and private. Lovely big porches upstairs and downstairs with a spectacular view. On our final day we saw manatees grazing about 100 yds offshore.

Get on the their website and do the virtual tour - that is EXACTLY what the villas look like inside. Belize was our 32nd country and we have never seen nicer accomodations anywhere near this price range. We did not stay at any of the other Hopkins resorts but visited a couple of them. Several looked nice but none of them appeared to approach the HBRV villas for size and quality.

2. The onsite managers (Mary and her husband Danie) were wonderful both before and during our visit. They will give you as much (or as little) help and advice as you need for restaurants, excursions, sightseeing etc. We checked out a couple of tour organizers at the other resorts, figured out what we wanted to do then came to talk with Mary and Danie. Rather than taking a big boat or van with a bunch of other visitors, they booked private boats for the 3 of us with a couple of great local guides they know (Terry for a wildlife-viewing trip up Monkey River and "Boo" for an offshore fishing and snorkeling trip to Bread and Butter Caye. ) Both Terry and "Boo" were excellent - informative, good-humored and obviously fond of their area and their work. The cost for the private tours arranged by HBRV was less than it would have been for a group tour booked via the tour organizers and we had the satisfaction of knowing that we were directly supporting talented local businesspeople (which is what Mary and Danie intend). At Mary and Danie's suggestion we visited the lush Mayflower park and waterfalls on our own in our rented vehicle (something which saved us a $200 tour).

We were a bit nervous about booking thanks (or no thanks!) to the previous reviewer who referenced the split between Belizean Dreams and HBRV (formerly sister resorts, now independent). We had ABSOLUTELY no problems with that, since Mary and Danie can now concentrate solely on HBRV and on HBRV visitors. HBRV is definitely different from the all-inclusive resorts south of Hopkins, but Mary and Danie certainly provided all the help and advice we needed along with a spacious and upscale villa.

3. We didn't have any problem with the lack of an onsite restaurant at HBRV - we WANTED to get out, try different restaurants/food and see Hopkins village at night. We had a couple of great dinners at Chef Rob's and at Innie's, but we saw very few folks from the other resorts there. Perhaps they were tied by a package to their resort restaurants - I am glad we were not. HBRV does provide (on request) a lovely full breakfast, delivered to your villa.

Suggestion -

Consider renting a car in Belize and exploring on your own a bit! Both in San Ignacio and in Hopkins, we saw a lot of people who were tied to their all-inclusive resorts (and tied to resort-organized activities) because they had no transport. The main roads are fine and navigation is dead easy. The drive from Belize City to Belmopan isn't hugely interesting, but from Belmopan to San Ignacio is great. And from Belmopan to Hopkins is gorgeous - some of the prettiest countryside you will ever see. Belize City airport to Hopkins is only about 2 1/2 hours by car - perfectly safe, very little traffic and a great way to get a feel for the country.

Depending on the number of visitors and the duration of the stay, having a vehicle can almost pay for itself . With a rental vehicle you don't need to pay for van or plane transfers from the airport to your destination - and once you get there you don't have to rely on your resort to provide ALL the transportation via expensive van tours. It also makes you the master of your own destiny both in terms of destinations and timing - we saw far more of Belize with our little 4 x 4 than we would have if we had been trapped without transport in an all-inclusive resort. As noted above, if you have a vehicle then you are free to try local restaurants rather than having to eat where you are staying (all the resorts in Hopkins are at least a mile from the restaurants in the village).

Hopkins Bay Resort is the most beautiful and relaxing place to stay. The entire staff was friendly and helpful. I felt very safe at the resort as well as in Hopkins Village.
