Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed April 12, 2012

Stayed with 13 and 16 year old, in a 2 bedroom suite, which was large and spacious. The whole family had a great time.

PROS:
Staff genuinely friendly.
Restaurant great atmosphere, on beach with open doors and breeze. Good food and reasonable prices.
Nice pools, with warm water, swim up bar, hot tub.
Virtually all rooms right on the sand.
Tours/excursions well run, only include hotel guests.
Friendly small town nearby (Hopkins) with golf carts availble to rent for $25 US for 2 hours.
Ocean very warm (April)--felt like 90 degrees temp. Was walk-in warm, like bath water.
Great snorkelling/diving (though requires boat ride; no snorkelling off the resort beach). Water warm and very clear.
Mayan ruin tours available (you can climb on the pyramids still) and an awesome "ATM" cave tour with Mayan ruins in the caves.
A few elegant restaurants are neaby on the beach. We didn't go into the town of Hopkins to eat (too lazy!)

CONS:
Sand flies annoying but don't cause nearly as much itching as mosquitoes. I'm still not sure if DEET repelled them or not. Most people just shrugged them off as an annoyance; not a vacation-ruiner.
Room decor a bit dated--this is not "marble and granite" luxury but is still very nice. TV in our room was laughingly tiny; no phones. No room service.
WiFi only in lobby/restaurant, not rooms.
Food prices reasonable but tour prices seemed a bit on the high side (though well run and limited to hotel guests only).

OVERALL a great place to stay.

Room Tip: Some of the cabanas are set back behind the restaurant--would avoid those rooms as not as nice as be...

Jaguar Reef was an excellent choice for our family, fifteen-year-old son and parents. Most significant was that other travelers seemed at ease in talking with our family and other families, an atmosphere created by an engaging and friendly staff. Tours are a good value and the guides were all talkative and well-informed. We heard from several more experienced travelers that the reefs are "the best". We were simply awe-struck.

Room Tip: The walk-out cabanas are convenient to the main building and beach.

We recently spent our honeymoon at Jaquar reef/Almond breeze resort. I can honestly say everything person that worked at the resort was extremely nice and accomidating. the rooms were cleaned everyday. We got the all inclussive package which included drinks and it was worth every cent. We took a short walk into town one night and had some great local food. this place is a must... just know the place closes its doors around 930 so if your looking for an all night partying place this isnt the one.

We spent 2 weeks at Jaguar Reef and loved it each day. We took advantage of the "adventure package" and had an amazing day trip almost everyday including tubing, snorkling, repelling, sailing, cultural sites, and fishing. The rooms were a great size and due to the off season vacancies they upgraded our room at no charge. The food and bar where wonderful. I had a spa treatment that I wasn't crazy about but other than that it was a perfect 2 weeks and we would love to go back.

We said there with our 4 kids (ages 7 to 16) and loved it. You have space and area to yourself. You have a selection of activities you can go or just do nothing at the beach and pools.

The food was great with great service. No standing in line for some tasteless buffet.

The beach area and pool area is very nice with plenty of chairs, hammock and sun chairs.

We really enjoyed renting a golf cart and driving into Hopkins. Great friendly people and you need to check out the bakery in town.

Our only recommendation and it is not specific to this resort, but is to use some bug spray. If the breeze goes down, the little sand flies can bite you without you knowing it.

We are to Belize for a 2 1/2 week vacation this March. Our stay was in many places but we planned to spend 6 days in Hopkins at Jaguar Reef Lodge. The accommodations were terrific. I have no complaints there. The room was beautiful. However, most of the staff had attitudes. First, we asked about a tour to go cave tubing. It was not on their list. We were told that they might be able to put it together for us but needed 4 people. We asked for three days and they told us no one else expressed interest so they could not put it together for us. So, we decided to do another tour to see the ruins. We go to sign up for this tour to see that they had arranged for the tour to take us cave tubing with no one else. They hadn't even bothered to come tell us. We asked for a wake up knock on the door for our tour was early the next morning, for they have no phones...that never happened. We wanted to sleep in one morning...got woken up by housekeeping at 7:45 am...was very grumpy to me when they told me to put the do not disturb sign out...I did...at 9:15 they knock again...I tell them we are still not ready that was why the do not disturb sign was still on the door. I got some laundry done. It was put out early the morning we went on our tour. Later that night, it still was not ready...we finally had to go get it ourselves the next day since Ross wanted his swimming shorts. The clothes were all inside out inside the bag. They had a beach BBQ day. It mentioned playing volleyball. I asked in the morning when the game was happening...I was told that they did not know...I asked at lunch,,,stilll no idea...I asked in the afternoon...I suggested a sign up sheet with a time...they looked at me like I had three heads.. When we ate in the restaurant, the menus had no prices. That is fine until they want me to sign to charge it to my room without a price...I asked for it to be completed and got attitude for that. There was some heavy trade winds happening at the time that was bringing in a lot of sea weed on the beach. I know there is nothing they can do about that but they could make some attempt to clean it up. The beach was terrible. The sea weed was thick on shore, and what was worse was it was mixed with tons of garbage...come on...this is suppose to be a high end hotel...please make some attempt to clean this up for the guests...no one was doing a thing about that. I went back to the room one afternoon. Housekeeping had out door wide out...while they were sweeping the walk far away from our door...someone could have walked in and taken something...but what did happen was a big bug had flown in and was present when we were going to sleep. We stayed at a few other places in Belize that were not as expensive as this place. I preferred the other places for the staff at the other places made us feel welcome and appreciated instead of a bother like we felt at Jaguar...I would not go back there. We will visit Hopkins again for it is close to the development where we bought land. However, I will look to stay somewhere else!!

VBQuality, Managing Director ViVA BELiZE Hotel Group at Jaguar Reef Lodge & Spa, responded to this reviewResponded July 19, 2016

Dear Tripadvisor Members

This review was posted April1,2012 - more than 4 years ago.
The Jaguar Reef Lodge was integrated into the ViVA BELiZE Hotel Group and Adventure Company on July 1st. 2012 and our Hotel Group has taken over financial control / ownership of the Lodge in 2013.

We have informed Tripadvisor many times now that this review is not only very old- but got irrelevant due to the fact that the Lodge is under new Management/Ownership since 4 years now already. We can't make any statement to the content of the review- this review was posted far before our time and we will continue requesting Tripadvisor to remove those old reviews that describe Travelers' experiences made at our Lodge far before our time. We refuse to change the name of the Lodge just to get Tripadvisor to comply with our request. We feel that the name of the Lodge is highly connected to the people of Hopkins- and the Villagers are proud of their very first Hotel - The Jaguar Reef Lodge.

We have invested into the complete renovation of the Jaguar Reef Lodge over the last years as well as into the continuous training of our staff. The product can't be compared to what it was back in the years before July 2012. We don't say that we are walking over water- not at all- but we are trying very hard to meet and exceed all our guests expectations- every day of the year! We are a Group of Tourism Pioneers- in love with Belize and the Belizean people since over 20 years- proud to present that beautiful country to you- Traveler's from around the World.

The ViVA BELiZE Hotel Group and Adventure Company has an Excellent reputation and our Resorts & Lodges won numerous Tripadvisor Awards on a National as well as on a International level over the last years. Under the ViVA BELiZE Management the Jaguar Reef Lodge was "Traveler's Choice Award Winner 2013"- for Small Resorts in Belize- and in 2015 the Lodge received the " Hall of Fame Certificate of Excellence 2011-2015". This special designation is awarded to businesses that have earned a "Certificate of Excellence" for five consecutive years. Also in 2016 Jaguar Reef Lodge again earned the Certificate of Excellence by Tripadvisor. We are not about winning Awards- but about making our guests happy.

Please be so kind to read the new Tripadvisor Travelers' reviews about the quality of our product (s). We would love to welcome you at the Jaguar Reef Lodge in Hopkins soon.

Friendly service. Lots to do or nothing if you choose. Beautiful accomodations with plenty of space for a family of five. Our children are all over 18 and this was a spot we could relax and play together. Cost of horseback riding, snorkeling etc. can be included in your price before you go.
