“Serenity in Hopkins”
Reviewed November 18, 2011

Jungle Jeannies has everything I ask for when I travel to the tropics. It's on a very nice, clean beach with calm water. It's close to town but not in it. (It's actually right next to the exclusive Hamanasi Resort). Each cabana has enough vegetation around it for privacy. The cabanas are hardwood with thatched leakproof roofs. Inside, they have every basic amenity - bathroom with warm shower, overhead lights and ceiling fans and lots of outlets with dependable electricity, refrigerator, desk and table, very comfortable beds, a spacious porch, and access to WiFi. The resort has a main dining area where they offer breakfast, dinner, and drinks. They also have a palapa in the jungle where they have yoga classes three times a week and sometimes entertainment in the form of local storytelling or Mayan marimba music.
Jeannie also has four German Shephards. They are her pets and are very obedient, playful, quiet, and not at all intimidating.
Jungle Jeannies is really the nicest and most affordable tropical resort I've ever stayed in.

While staying in Hopkins, we asked our hotel owner (Tipple Tree Beya, very nice and affordable small 4-rooms hotel, deserving a separate review), who should she recommend for snorkeling trip, and she directed us to the small family business nearby - Watering Hole. The price for 4 people tour was $200 USD, including water and lunch. Left at 9 a.m., and returned 3 p.m. The sea was rough in the morning, and the guide came to our cabin with apologies and warnings, that the trip might not be very pleasant. We decided to go for it, and in fact that was not so bad, may be because of the Dramamin dose taken before the departure. We were visiting three spots, and it was nice. Definitely, corals were not as good as in Egypt or Israel, but much better than in Hawaii or Costa Rica.
It is highly recommended!

My husband and I stayed at JJ's for two nights. We had a lovely time. The cabana was minimalistic - just the very bare necessities but was perfect for us. The amazing breeze and the sound of the rolling waves was hypnotic and made for amazing sleeping and relaxing. Being dog lovers, we greatly enjoyed visiting wth the three beautiful dogs in residence - including surfing with them. I WAS saddened and surprised by the amount of plastic and other floatsom that has to be cleaned off the beach every morning - but we are all responsible for that. The beach and the water were lovely.
If you're looking for posh and exclusive, by all means go down the beach to the exclusive resorts - but for my money and traveling style, JJ's was a lovely, relaxing place to spend a few days.

Room Tip: Go for the Tree House - great breeze!

We stayed at JJ for two nights. While the location is terrific, the cabanas leave alot to be desired. I can understand 'rustic' but we found the place to be dirty and a little unsanitary. The shower curtain was moldy and door broken, which was concerning. The beach is littered with garbage and dog poop. Hopkins itself is charming and the Garifuna people are lovely. I would recommend driving a few more miles south, spending a little more money and having a comfortable stay.

Jungle Jeanies is blessed with a great location, and nice ambiance. The outward appearance of the lodge and rooms are high, nice wood finishings, nice local carvings, nice eating area... but there are some drawbacks. The mattresses were the worst we've ever slept on, the rooms very hot and stuffy, with no airflow, and little fan support. There were LOTS and LOTS of sand fleas at night, which were VERY tiresome. Trying to eat dinner and getting bitten alive was frustrating. The hosts were very nice, and very helpful and very accomodating and work hard to arrange good trips of good value with local guides. Our stay was VERY hot and very muggy! The beach however, was very nice! There was no shortage of garbage, however, and piles of seaweed washed up along shore. little effort has been made along the huge stretch of beach to create and nice atmosphere for a stroll. Food on site was good... reasonably priced. Some mention the dogs. Yes the dogs exist. They can bark at times and wake you up... but weren't a huge problem for me!

Room Tip: Check out the rooms and the beds first.

We stayed at Jungle Jeanie’s in March. The main attractions are the beachside location and very friendly owners, staff and resident hounds. It is a also good base for touring in the area. Even for visitors primarily interested in the Cockscomb Sanctuary, Jeanie’s is a much nicer place to stay than the accommodations available at Maya Centre. The higher-priced cabana we stayed in for two nights was fine. The lower-priced cabanas need some maintenance. The breakfasts are excellent value – one plate was easily sufficient for two of us. We ate dinner there one night and found it also good value. For a more upscale dining experience, try Chef Bob’s in Hopkins or Beaches & Dreams in Sittee River – although dinner at these restaurants is more expensive, we found the value was good at both places. For those interested in bird watching on the Sittee River, find Horace (ask anyone in Sittee River where to find Horace and his boat). He will take you out for a couple of hours or so for US$40-50.

We actually chose not to stay here upon arrival...it did not appear particularly clean (broken furniture and caged dogs under cabin) and our cabin was back behind others which made it dark and without much view. In addition, the cabin to sleep 5 was quite tight for 2 adults and 3 teenagers. the reviews we read made it seem better than it looked and guests should just be clear what they are getting--it is not for everyone.
