“Loved LONE PINE”
Reviewed November 14, 2008

I I just loved my stay at lone pine. We booked a triple room through Asia rooms and we were quite amazed to c the room size. Its rally a big room. With a nice balcony. The location is also very nice. But I dont like the beach. Its really a dirty one. But overall our stay at lone pine is memorable. We will definatly came back to batu ferringi and lone pine.

We made our hotel reservation in www.asiarooms.com, the room had to be paid at the moment of making the reservation. We received a confirmation voucher via email and printed it as usual. We took the confirmation voucher and at the moment of checking in, the hotel said they didn't have a reservation from us. Just after this, the receptionist tells to us that she's sorry, she doesn't have our reservation so she couldn't check us in and if we wanted a room we needed to pay again. We asked them to contact asiarooms to ask for the confirmation of our payment and booking. After several attempts of asking them to solve the problem as we had the voucher, we had paid for the room in advance and we were not responsible of their internal processes, the 3 receptionists started raising their voice, denying the check in and even one lied in our face of what we were saying. We asked to talk to the Hotel Manager who generally are more proactive on resolving these cases but they denied to get us in contact with her saying that it was a holiday and she will be back on monday. (In which hotel a General Manager will take a holiday when it's a Public Holiday???? only in the Lone Pine Hotel).
Well, to make the story short, this bad experience with the hotel staff took us 2 hours to be sorted out and it was arranged by the travel agency that deals between asiarooms and Lone Pine Hotel and not by the hotel staff.
How we were treated in this hotel was completely unacceptable.
I work in the travel industry as well and we earn our salaries providing service to our guests, without them we will be unemployed. This was for sure the worst hotel experience I have ever had demonstrating to me that Lone Pine Hotel do not care about guest at all.
We chose this hotel among others by looking at their website, the look of the hotel and maintenance of it has nothing to do with the images you see in the web page. I am uploading some images of the hotel for your reference.

This has been one of my favourite places and we have been regular guests. Anyone who grew up in Asia in the 60's and 70's should feel right at home. Sadly, the hotel is due for a major make-over / refurbishment and possibly also a horrendous multi-storey extension out back which is likely to end it's low rise retro charm. In the meantime the management seem to have suspended even fairly basic maintenance. The bathrooms are mildewy and damp. The furniture is increasingly beaten up and simply unacceptably dirty. A temporary marquee at the restaurant has become a permanent and grotty fixture. There is a third rate disco band playing too late and too loud. The hotel and the whole Batu Feringhi strip has taken a determined dive down-market and is now a sort of tropical but dirtier Lanzagrotte. . On the other hand, the rooms remain a generous size, are not too dirty, the gardens are a peaceful oasis and the staff remain friendly and helpful - but we won't be back and will probaly prefer to remember it as it was.

  • Liked — genrous rooms, lovely gardens, peaceful oasis, friendly staff
  • Disliked — dirty, poor maintenance, cheap band, down market feel for mid market price

My partner and I were looking for somewhere comfortable and friendly rather than big and modern. We stayed there for 5 days using it as a starting point for 3 weeks in Malaysia.
The Lone Pine staff are very friendly and helpful. The facilities were good and alot of the guests return year after year.... always a good sign. The beach was clean and not too busy. Most tourists prefer the pool for some rason.
The breakfasts were BIG with so much choice..... no need for lunch. The poolside restaurant served good value snacks/light meals during the day. The hotel had a real cross section of nationalities. On the last day there was a wedding that went on until the early hours. That was the only negative thing.

The resort of Batu Ferringhi is ok, nothing special. Full of shops and marketstalls selling counterfeit t-shirts and bags. It was difficult to find a restaurant that served Laksa but overall the local restaurants were good.

  • Liked — Friendly staff and homely atmosphere.
  • Disliked — Nothing

My friend and I stayed here for 6 nights in early August. I had read some poor reviews recently but I really enjoyed my stay here. The hotel is a little run down, in particular the bathroom but apart from that it is comfortable in a great location. The staff are lovely and the room was spacious. We were in a Superior room with pool/sea view and a nice sized balcony. We had a hotel transfer and the car was very new, clean and comfortable. Internet access is available for RM 10 and this gives you a log in and you have an hour to use so it is great if you just need it for 5 minutes here and there. Where the internet is located there is also a cabinet full of books so I was happy to be able to swap the one I read for another book. Water activities are located directly outside the hotel on the beach. I could also hear the sound of the waves from our room which was very relaxing during the night. I would definitely recommended this hotel as it is a great value for money.

  • Liked — Location, staff, size of room, pool, pretty much everything.
  • Disliked — Bathroom needed a of TLC

Myself and my husband and our two children ages 10 and 12 booked this hotel for five nights but ended up checking out after two nights!

We were a little apprehensive booking this accommodation as the Trip Advisor reviews were very mixed but we love an old fashioned type of hotel and it sounded really charming so we decided to give it a go. Lonely Planet rate this as a top end hotel but I would put it nearer a two star.

We had requested the hotel pick us up at the airport and the first surprise we got on the way to the hotel was that there was an infestation of some kind of insect all over the floor at the back right hand side and these little insects unfortunately kept on crawling up my ten year old sons legs! We did not let this upset us but the driver did appear quite unconcerned. The hotel itself is quite charming but very frayed around the edges with little or no money put into it in the last few years. The location on the beachfront is really pretty and the pine trees make it very picturesque. It is also a lovely quiet hotel and seems tucked away from the more lively strip just outside the hotel. I would imagine this was a really nice hotel in its day but unfortunately that time is long gone - with a good injection of money this hotel could quite easily be restored to a really charming hotel again. The towels were thread bare and lots had holes in them. I noticed droppings - ghekkos or mice?? - in the bathroom on more than one occasion but perhaps these cant be prevented given the age of the hotel. We thought the breakfast very poor with all the fixtures and fittings very shabby and were never comfortable staying there for long.

We have never checked out of a hotel early before but decided this was not for us and moved to another hotel on day three. Let me just say that all the staff were really nice but its a pity that a hotel with such charm and potential has not been cared for and maintained in the manner it should be in the last number of years.

  • Liked — Its charm
  • Disliked — The fact that it was run down

I had researched the Lone Pine before we booked, and although it was described as a bit 'shabby' we thought the situation would override this. We specifically asked for an upper room with sea view, we got a ground floor with no view other than a grey brick wall each side at least 6' high and a large wooden door at the end of a scrubby 'courtyard' (so called) honestly our dog had a better view from the kennel she was staying in, why they have built these walls in between the 'gardens' I have no idea. the rooms are very 'tired' but I think we could have put up with that had we been given the room we had specifically asked for, anyway, we went to reception and explained, and they had no other room they could offer us on a permanent basis, so, we would have been moving around every three or four days - we had booked for three WEEKS - so, this was not acceptable, we spent one night there, and due to the efforts of our rep. we transferred to the Bay View Resort the next day, What a difference, how on earth it is the same star rating We have no idea, we were given an excellent room, with side sea view over 'the bay'. We cannot speak too highly of the Bay, it was excellent. The lone Pine? well, someone needs to sort some things out, it could be a pleasant little hotel to stay if the owners would invest a bit of money there.
