This is one iconic casual luxury hotel on the beach in Penang. If you are an oldtimer, you'd notice how well they have managed to preserve the homeliness and tranquility character around the hotel whilst introducing a whole new atmosphere and the feeling of being pampered just by the structure of the hotel and its surroundings itself. In the room - absolutely comfortable bed and unique layout plus a bath on the balcony. Never get tired of the place...

My daughter and I had a two-night stay at the Lone Pine, at short notice, and we couldn't have had a more enjoyable time! Clearly the hotel has been renovated since some previous reviews talk about its tattiness but it is now clean, fresh and modern. Our room had a fantastic view towards the sea (almost all the rooms do) and the spacious balcony had a exterior, deep bath - what a brilliant idea, watching the setting sun from your bath, holding a glass of crisp white wine, with the swish of the waves below you! The internal bathroom itself was roomy and cleverly designed and the bedroom was a beautiful mixture of chic and mininalist - though we could have done with an extra chair or two, if I'm being picky. The staff and the atmosphere of the place was a charming combination of informality and courtesy: the staff had clearly been instructed to make sure the priority was always the guests' enjoyment of their stay. The restaurant food was varied and the menu permitted me to eat easily with my tricky food allergies. Absolutely the best hotel I have stayed in and I would recommend it highly.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view.

The hotel is fairly good given the price / location. Rooms are decent, wifi is weak and spotty, bathrooms are clean and acceptable. Beds are ok, breakfast excellent. Pool is small but the beach is nice (same beach as the Shangri La resorts) although full of hawkers peddling jetski rides and other watersports. Within a 5 min walk were some great late night mamak cafes and the night market / food court is nearby as well.

We stayed for a week and loved it!. The only reason it is four stars instead of five because the view we had from our room was overlooking the Bungalow restaurant. We did not ask to be moved, as we were happy to be tucked up in the far corner of the hotel. The complementary soft drinks and water were great, and the thongs (flip flops) a practical alternative to slippers. The thing we took away with us was the friendliness of the staff. We were always greeted with a smile and a greeting. Credit should also go to the GM who made a point of wandering around the pool and restaurant to stop and say hello. We would definitely go back.

Room Tip: Room 323 overlooks the kitchen and bungalow restaurant, so the view is not so good. Avoid if possib...

We spent 5 nights at Lone Pine Hotels with our two young sons (8 and 10). We love the hotel grounds with its unique large lawn under the shades of mature pine trees. We always prefer smaller boutique hotels with a bit of history. Lone Pine Hotel met our needs perfectly. We took the suggestion on the hotel website and booked a deluxe room for our family. We had room 815 which has an open unobstructed see view framed by the pine trees.
The rooms doesn't have many closet, but it is very specious and have plenty of space for us to spread our luggage. The tables and couch on the balcony is a brilliant extension of living space. My husband and I were able to read quietly on the balcony while kids watch TV in the room with the balcony door closed. It offered the privacy usually only provided by suites. Our kids love the hammocks, while we love to read on the deck chairs dotted on the lawn. It is a quieter alternative to sitting by the pool when we don't want to go swimming.
The downside of the hotel is that it is right by the public beach and the local night market. There is also a dirty waterway next to it. So from time to time, you can smell the stale water smell from the waterway and petrol from the jet engine of the speedboat in the morning. It is also fairly noisy because of the speedboats. The weekend is worse than during the weekdays. Overall, we still love this charming little hotel.

Room Tip: The best rooms are deluxe room 811-815. They are the second floor rooms in the older lower rise bui...

Very stylish concrete structure and decor (think Mad Men in the tropics) mixed with the quaint original buildings from the 1940's, this was the first hotel in Batu Ferringhi. Now owned by E&O hotels who know a thing about running a heritage hotel. Best thing about concrete is that you can't hear a sound from adjoining rooms!
Food is good but not cheap when compared to the numerous options available just outside the hotel.
Staff are genuinely helpful and will go out of their way to make your stay a pleasure.
The guests are an eclectic mix from all over the world. There were families with children of various ages, couples (gay and straight), multi-generational family groups and groups of friends.
Wifi is free but patchy but staff bent over backwards to try to solve the issue including bringing a router to our room.
If I ever come back to Penang I will definitely stay here. Strongly recommended.
