Bayview Beach Resort
Ranked #7 of 11 Hotels in Batu Ferringhi
Reviewed January 6, 2009

Me and my husband and his family went here for a short 2 days and 1 night trip to visit his sister in Penang. We chose this hotel because it is located along the main Batu Ferringhi stretch of beach, and although it's a bit higher up, it's in a good location. The room rates are also reasonable and not as expensive as the other nearby hotels (the Shangri La Rasa Sayang and Golden Sands Resort, for example). We didn't really know if the hotel was any good before we got there, as we never stayed at any of the Bayview hotels before and it's been such a long time since we've been to Penang. Well, we were in for a pleasant surprise.

From the outside, the hotel is non-assuming building of grey. When we got the lobby though, our whole perception changed. The lobby is very very spacious, with a view all the way to the roof of the hotel. The corridors and room doors can be viewed from the lobby and although it's hard to explain, it's kinda like the Noga Hilton in Cannes, France..which my husband has been to.

We booked 2 deluxe side-seaview rooms. Check-in was quick and the service from the staff was good. When we got there, our romms were already ready for us (no delayed check-ins here!). The rooms were nice and very clean, with full carpeting throughout (yay!), and although the decorations and furniture used were a bit old fashioned and showing signs of age, they were in excellent condition. There's a spacious balcony with a side-on view to the sea (hence the name) and a couple of chairs and a small table to enjoy the view. What struck me most was the nice touches here and there that we found in the room. For example, there's an electronic 'do not disturb' sign (the first time we've seen this anywhere), multiple languages for instructions and hotel brochures, the SONY TV and alarm clock (other hotels sometime uses el-cheapo TV's and appliances in their rooms), and there's also an iron and ironing board already supplied in the room. Overall, the room is really nice and exceeded our expectations. On the downside, there tends to be a lot of mosquitoes in our room, especially at night, making it hard to sleep. Add to this the fact that the room aircond was not especially cool, we initially set it on to HIGH but found that it was a bit warm. Funnily, when we changed it to MEDIUM setting, the room became cooler and we were able to sleep. In short, remember to bring along mosquito coils or electronic mosquito repellents if you plan on staying here!

The other thing that we really liked about the hotel is that there's a lot of facilities made available to guests. There's a mini library, a mini sports lounge where you can watch sports programs, a teen games room (an arcade), tennis and basketball courts, a nice but somewhat small swimming pool, a nightclub, a lounge replete with a piano, and even a hair saloon! I especially like the corner they have set up in the lobby for donations to several charitable foundations, such as the SPCA and also some local orphanages.

The Bayview hotel has several restaurants to cater to different tastes, there's even an upsclae european food restaurant called the Marco Polo. Since we didn't eat there, I'm not able to tell you how the food there was. However, we did get to eat at the hotel's cafe (I can't remember the name) for our buffet breakfast. Let me tell you, it was just out of this world! A huge, huge, HUGE variety of food was available, more than I've seen anywhere else! Since I'm a big fan of buffets, this is the best one I've been to yet! There was such a varied spread of food available that it was serious hard for us to choose! ANd this is not simply the usual 'buffet breakfast' fare which we're accustomed to seeing everywhere else...the food was varied yet fascinating! Just to give you an idea how varied it was...there was 5-6 types of fruit juices, 5-6 types of breads, 5 types of cereals, a handful of various Heinz fruit spreads, and even a coffee maker than can make lattes (there's 3-4 coffee stations scattered at strategic locations)...and this is apart from the other numerous types of food. In short, the buffet breakfast was totally worth it and we left feeling thoroughly full. In fact, I'd seriously consider returning here just for the food! Lol :p

As for the beach, well let me just say that this hotel and this place is not really for beach lovers. For one, the waters are very cloudy and somewhat dirty...unlike the pristine clear waters off Terengganu. Secondly, the beach is very narrow and cramped...so much so that the deck chairs people use to tan themselves are not actually situated on the beach itself! Instead, the hotel chose to place the deck chairs around the pool area. The sand on the beach is course. To add insult to injury, there's a sort of storm drain that runs into the sea very near to the hotel (they call this a geotube, but it looks like a drain to me). The water from the drain is dirty and stagnant. It's no wonder then that you can hardly find anything swimming in the sea. Another thing that turned us off was that the beach is crowded with people trying to persuade you to go on jetski rides, horse rides, ATV rides and other such watersport activities like parasailing. As a result, the beach was noisy with the sound of jetskis and boats...while horses are fine by me, even beautiful...ATV's scrambling on the beach are definitely NOT! Plus, at night, you can't even enjoy a quite stroll on the beach, as there's a VERY noisy nightclub located right on the beach just to the side of the hotel. Mind you, this was just at the beach fronting the Bayview hotel, it might be better at the beaches of the Rasa Sayang Resort, etc...I'm not sure.

To sum up, this place is perfect for a short getaway for people who are not really fond of the beach. For people like me and my hubby who loves the beach, they might come away disappointed. Other than that, the hotel was excellent and is in a good location (shops and restaurants nearby, close to town and there's a night market everynight just outside the hotel).

This hotel seems like it is in the middle of nowhere - there is nothing to do in the surrounding area at all. A taxi into the city centre is 30RM each way, which is expensive so do your best to bargain because you will get ripped off. The hotel itself doesn’t look great and there are construction works all over the place. The beach isn’t the nicest beach, and there are jellyfish in the sea so we didn’t dare venture in. On the positive side of things, the staff were all very friendly and the rooms weren't too bad. I went here with my friend but it’s much more orientated towards families. If you are looking to explore the island, then this hotel is not for you. I’d recommend G Hotel instead.

We always come back to this hotel whenever we visit Penang. It has almost become a yearly event.

The suite is very spaceous. Can easily accomodate 5 adults 2 children with a roll-away bed.

The 2 younger kids enjoyed the pool, my mum & I enjoyed the spa while my husband & the eldest 16-yr old enjoyed the beach. The breakfast was great with its variety too.

The recent surpise we had was that the fittings in the bathroom were upgraded - Grohe shower + new hairdryer.

Although the room was fully carpetted, we did not sneeze or itch when we entered the room or throughout the stay. To me, it is a sign that the room was properly cleaned, a very important factor since we are allergic to dust.

As long as the kids are still charmed by the food, room & pool, we will stay here again at our next visit.

The hotel is located at the end of Batu Ferrighhi beach. There is nothing much in the surrounding area, shops are not open most of the time and with the heat and the surrounding construction, it is not appealing to even step out of the hotel.

The beach is not very clean too, not the best. If you are thinking of exploring Penang and not just lounge around in the hotel and its beach, don't stay here. Transport to city area takes abt 20 min and costs around 30RM one way which is way too high, taxis don't operate on meters, so bargain hard.

The place has seen better days. Things are falling apart, old furniture, lights that won't work etc. Only saving grace is its rooms are large and the bed is huge, the size of 2 super single beds.

Food is quite good, huge selection.

Given a choice, won't stay here again. Very much prefer G hotel or Evergreen Hotel.

Have just returned from Penang after a very relaxed 2 weeks. We have stayed at Bayview before in 2005 and the resort has improved since then.
The weather was kind to us - not too hot with a pleasant cool breeze each day. Only one downpour in the evening which lasted a short hour and didnt spoil our plans.
The resort pool was great and easily accessable for us with graduated steps with a hand rail as well as a step down into the spa area. We spent several days enjoying the spa . It was theraputic and invigorating.
The resort grounds are well maintained and green. Staff are in attendance every day busily manicuring hedges, trimming lawns watering and weeding. Everyone in the area will greet you with a friendly smile and "goodmorning".
The highlight of our stay was finding a wonderful guy called Ricky. A proffessional Reflexologist of 13 years. A man with gifted hands and a wonderful knowledge in reflexology. What ever you do, while staying at the resort, do yourself a favour and indulge in a session or two. You will be amazed with his knowledge and insight and will work on all the aches and pains you didnt realise that you had. He is magic !
Our room was more than adequate. A side seaview which was larger than the average, and we were able to watch the sun setting each evening on the balcony with an afternoon refreshment or two.
The breakfast was good, offering a wide variety of foods - fresh fruits, bakery section and breads for toasting through to a large range of cooked dishes - western and asian. An egg station cooking a variety of "whatever style" .
Every staff member were polite and friendly from the moment of our arrival and greeting in the lobby, to room maids, pool attendants and groundsmen.
We loved being able to stretch the legs each evening and walk to the local Hawker food area - Long beach . We could dine on a meal fit for Kings at such a minimal cost. Laksa $1.50, huge spring rolls prepared and cooked in front of you $1. and any Asian/Indian meal for about $2 - $7. What great memories and meals we have from here !
The walk back to the resort helped digest our over indulgence !
If you enjoy a short walk then the Bayview is for you. We love the place and will be back again next year.

Well, we loved the laid back atmosphere and green surroundings after coming from the contrast of Singapore. The pool was lovely as well as the spacious grass areas overlooking the beach and surrounding hills. We loved ordering the satay and wedges for lunch outside on the lawn. Cocktails were great too! Dissapointing that the beach was public with many people stationed there trying to sell watersports or horse rides - so we didn't use it - plus the warnings of jellyfish put us off! The kids club was great and had lots of choices, with lovely and helpful staff. Breakfast was nice. We had a family room overlooking the jungled hills with 2 balconies which was lovely with heaps of room for the kids to run around. The piano bar in the lounge at night was great although it didn't kick off till 8.30 which was a shame (with kids bedtime and all). Enjoyed strolling down the street past the markets and trying different restaurants each night. Only downside to the hotel was that it is a preferred muslim hotel, so you feel a bit selfconscious wearing singlets or bikinis with the majority of people covered up. I also found being female meant I got ignored quite a bit with service at the hotel and around town. We were able to get a late check out for free after talking with the front desk manager which was a bonus.

Arrived midnight at this hotel, no help with luggage-although there were porters on duty-just given room key and told to go to the 9th floor, had to find own way. Room was not clean, smelt of damp, carpet was stained and was bed linen which was also moth eaten, towels were frayed at edge. Shower head flew of when shower was turned on and toilet leaked water everytime it was flushed. Room service was good although the trays were not picked up forover twenty- four hours-they sat outside the room. Gardens were well maintained, pool staff were excellent as were the resturant staff. However birds were flying around resturant areas and landing on tables. Food was okay. Pool area at times became very over crowded, this was due to the facilities being used by people from the surrounding community. There was a private pool which cost RM 100 each person per hour. We requested a late checkout as we had a night flight, we were told that we could pay another RM 30 per hour but we could only have the room for an extra hour.
