I liked everything about this hotel.

We stayed in balcony rooms with a side view of the ocean. The rooms were extremely clean and comfortable with a safe in each room and lockable wardrobe. Every night huge cookies were left by room service. A newspaper was provided every day.

Breakfast was included in our package deal and was very good. There was lots of variety and choice. I also loved the fresh juice. You chose what fruits you wanted and they made the juice in front of you.

The staff at the kids club are very friendly, encouraging and patient and keep younger children busy with activities.

The hotel had arranged activities every day to keep you busy. Loved the snake show.

The pools were fantastic. Even a water slide for the kids.

I also liked the lobby area, where there are couches where you can laze and read a book while being served whatever you want to drink. Then at night there is music.

The location was excellent. I really enjoyed the street markets out the front every night. Very inexpensive. I just wish that I'd had more money to spend!

It rained several times during the days we were there but they are set up for it and it remained warm. There is an umbrella in the room.

There is also a tour desk in the hotel. The staff are very helpful and arrange everything. The prices are quite high for tours but you expect this. We found it alot cheaper to hire a taxi driver to take us around. I'd highly recommend the snorkeling at Lankawi.

We heard others complaining about the Muslim call to prayer which rang out during the day and night (a mosque is nearby) but I quite enjoyed it as it added to the atmosphere.

My only negative would be that the restaurants and food in the hotel were very expensive in comparison to the local restaurants. We ate at the seaside cafes (behind the hotel) for lunch and the Longbeach cafe down the road for Dinner.

A very relaxing hotel at a reasonable cost. Good facilities and very neat, clean and comfortable. Any one would enjoy staying here, whether single, couple (even honeymooners) or family.

We were more than impressed with the Park Royal hotel, Penang. Great location (beachfront and night markets behind hotel). The staff were very friendly. Rooms were stunning and very clean. We even got little 'gifts' left in our room each night eg. cookies, sweets, etc.
Would recommend to everyone!!

After an horrible experience at another Penang hotel (see my other reviews), we were relieved to find the Parkroyal available for a great price on HotelClub. We paid about $140AUD a night for a deluxe room on the third floor.

We arrived much earlier than was stated on the website, about half an hour after making the booking through HotelClub, and after hearing our story of the night before the lovely reception staff sped up our check in so we could settle in without delay. About ten minutes after we arrived in our room, one of the room service staff knocked on our door with a bunch of beautiful flowers to congratulate us on our honeymoon - exceptional for an hotel which we'd booked at short notice through a secondary website!

The room itself was clean, comfortable and had all the touches you'd expect from the Parkroyal chain, including a king sized bed and bathtub. The hotel had many restaurants, a pool and is right on the beach (although Batu Ferringhi isn't that great for swimming). There was also a gym, beauty salon and typically overpriced in-hotel convenience store (just pop across the road to the two convenience stores there for what you want at about a quarter of the cost). The hotel is on the main strip towards the west end of town, close to the pasar malam (night markets) and a short walk from some great hawker centres. We did most of our eating off-site (we didn't come to Penang to eat hotel food) but did make an exception to eat wagyu steak in one of the restaurants one night - we pretty much had the place to ourselves, and it was a nice treat. Breakfast was included in our room rate and the buffet provided downstairs was quite good (not so much upstairs).

We hired bikes from the hotel and rode to the butterfly farm and spice garden - we wouldn't recommend the hotel hire as their bikes are very old and they don't include helmets or locks (which we didn't find out until after they'd pulled the bikes out and we'd signed the theft and damage waiver!). Also, for what it cost us to hire bikes for four hours, we could've hired a car for the whole day. There's plenty of other bike hire places along the main Batu Ferringhi strip so shop around if you're interested.

Overall we wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Parkroyal if you can find a discount rate which is more appropriate for the four-star hotel than the rates they charge direct. Although BF is a tourist trap these days, it's still a nicer place to stay than Georgetown or Tanjung Bungah, and the night markets and hawker centres are great for cheap shopping and eating.

This hotel was initially recommended to us by a Malaysian friend. The first year we stayed, it wasn't in any of the brochures back home, so all we had was the recommendation and the hotel website (and tripadvisor of course!) We absolutely loved it. The 3 times we've been here we have been upgraded, once to a junior suite which had it's own terrace. Breakfast is lovely, lots of choice and abundance of food. Staff are friendly and helpful. Lobby Lounge is such a nice relaxing bar.
The next 2 years we stayed here, the hotel had been featured in holiday brochures back in England and was slightly more expensive, but worth every penny.
Next time I go back to Penang, I'll be staying here again.

I'm a travel agent & decided to experience Penang for the first time. I stayed at this hotel for 6n to wind down after a hectic year & it was a good price for a hotel of its star rating & having never been to Penang I found it a great location. Right out the front of the hotel along the streets every evening the markets were on & things were considerably cheaper than the markets & market malls in Kuala Lumpur. EG: cd's & dvd's RM4 (fixed price - all stalls the same price, sometimes got deal buy 10 & 1 free). T-Shirts of all brands were very cheap about RM10-15 & were very good quality. I bought a few things and washed them beforehand to see if they would be ok & I'm very happy with them. Also heaps of sunglasses, wallets, watches, souviners & some bags (although found the range of handbags not so great). There are lots of places to eat nearby whether its market style food which is cheap but hygiene isn't a high priority so wasn't too adventurous. Good cheap restuarants offering chinese and western foods and a KFC available down the other end of the street (a bit of a walk, at the end of the markets so when you get to the end you can get KFC and a cab or walk back). Taxis' or Teski's are cheap as but be warned they are crazy crazy drivers - just don't look out the window as they drive or its makes you sick with nerves!!

Just a warning for those a little unsteady on their feet, the streets & very uneven & you need to watch where you walk as there are obstacles everywhere. No where in Penang is wheelchair friendly.

The hotel was very nice, not a blade of grass out of place, friendly staff & plenty of them. The room was a nice size for a stay of this length, aircon, cable tv & all the standard bells & whistles. I was a little disappointed with the view though. We booked a superior side seaview room & did have a view of the water just but looked down over the roof of a building & shacky buildings but the worst thing was that there was a mosque close by and at all hours of the day and night (starts about 4.30am!!!) we were woken & blasted with singing over speakers & it was pretty loud. If you go just request a room on the other side from the mosque (the side nearer to Georgetown - I think its the East).

Apart from that I wouldn't hesitate to reccommend the place. Room service prices were ok and selection good and food very nice. Breakfasts there was a good variety eg: fresh fruits, yoghurts, toast, jams etc, asian dishes eg: noodles, curries &
local noodle dish. If you are expecting bacon & eggs and more western food you will be disappointed - no bacon as I know it, turkey bacon & someother stuff they called bacon & sausages that were very strange. Selection didn't change during our whole stay so after 6 days we were sick of the sight of the food! They had a great juice bar where you could get endless supply at breaky of freshly squeezed juice - yum!

Pool was nice, lots of chairs and towels available for use. Cafe & table service but prices of cold drinks were very dear eg: RM18 for a coke, other food standard hotel prices & tasty. There are a couple of stores across the road that we regularly bought cans & snacks from & cans of coke were RM1.50 so heaps cheaper. Food generally was very very cheap especially McDonalds (none near hotel) a chicken burger meal with fries and coke was RM7!!

Did some day tours and they were ok - about 4/10 but we're spoilt coming from Australia and used to beautiful things. There is a hepful tour desk at reception & the conceirge were great - they debriefed us when they got us a taxi & told us what we should pay for the return & gave us tips on many things which proved really helpful & money savers.

The beach was ok but paled into insignificance compared to our local beaches. The sand was really gravelly, the water murky & the view out to sea was misty looking. I didn't even know there were islands/land out from us until the day we left was clear & they were right there!! But despite this it was a nice clean beach & shouldn't deter anyone. Lots of activities to do eg: horse riding, parasailings, jet skiis, banana boats. Jet skiis were RM100 for 30mins, horse riding RM30 for a ride. Didn't think prices were too bad but just not keen on going in the water & safety standards are not as in Australia so thought better of it (not adventurous am I). The beach wasn't packed, most people were at the pool.

Shopping in Batu Feringihi was really only the markets. Get a taxi to Gurney Plaza about RM15 each way or Paringan Mall about RM20. Both open about 10am/11am and close late evening. Paringan is great, you can batar at alot of the shops and there are heaps of great things, lots of shoes, stores as we know them & a department store called Metrojaya which was great. Also a great eye wear shop called A-Look. They have glasses at RM168 per paid, buy 3 get 1 free, they do eye tests & can get your glasses in 1 hour. I got 3 pair glasses, 1 pair sunglasses, had a eye test, got perscription lens in all incl the sunglasses & also another pair I already had I got new lenses in & the total came to RM860 = about A$300 which is fantastic!!!

Some prices the ladies might want to know are: handbags/leather style from Metrojaya I bought 11 and the dearest was RM90 = A$30ish. Mabelyine makeup eg: lipsticks RM24, eyeshadow about same & less 15% on top of that too. Shoes - the range is endless all styles to suit everyone all shoes were generally around RM30 +/-. We picked up many pairs well under RM30 so great!!!

I would definitely go back to Penang. The cultural side is a bit of a shock as I'm not used to seeing people living in the conditions they do there, its an eye opener but part of the travelling experience. I feel very sad that people live in conditions such as I have seen there but know this is common throughout asia. If you can look past that the people are friendly & I felt safe in all places. Just a word of warning when choosing a hotel. The Guerney Road area hotels are lovely but the beach/water area there was very damaged by the Tsunami & is no longer water but a stinking mud flat - not nice to look at so choose to stay up at Batu Feringhi.

Thanks Lisa.

My husband and I have just spent four nights at the Parkroyal with our six year old son and were very disappointed. We also spent 4 nights at the magnificent Hilton in KL and the Westin in Langkawi. Both of the other hotels are far superior in quality, yet they represented far better value. For example - a cup of coffee at the Westin was around $3 AUS and at the Parkroyal it was $8. A beer from the mini bar at the Westin was around $4 AUS and it was more like $12 at the Parkroyal. The staff were madly running around trying to offer special deals on buffet dinners etc, but still, the guests were leaving in droves to eat at the cheaper restaurants nearby to the hotel. We ate a great meal nearby for around$10 AUS for the three of us.
When we arrived, we found the room that was supposed to be big enough for the three of us, would definitely NOT fit a rollway bed in it. We were offered an upgrade to a family room for an extra $70 AUS a night. This brough the cost up to almost the same as the Westin - and the Westin INCLUDED breakfast whereas the Parkroyal DID NOT. We really felt ripped off. The hotel is pretty old and smelly with average bathrooms and old TVs. All of this would have been acceptable if everything wasn't so damned expensive!!
