“Great Service, Beautiful Location, Huge Rooms”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 19, 2010

We were looking at a family friendly budget hotel with all the perks of a star rating. We did not go wrong. Book from priority club to get the deals. Choose the rooms on the tower wing and ask for a higher sea facing room. the rooms are huge and most with 2 double beds and room to spare. The furnishings were a bit dated but the equipment top notch. We had a wonderful time in and outside the hotel with most things within walking distance. Use the massage spas located right outside, fantastic value for money. eat at the food courts outside.
The beach wing is newly renovated and more expensive but the rooms do not have balconies and sad pool views, so we found the tower wing more bang for the buck. If youre travelling with families, try the kid suites, great value for money.
have a great time shopping at the night market and try the local shack foods on the beach

Well where should I begin. Firstly I should start by saying this is not a reflection on the staff, during our stay we were treated very well by all staff, even though we knew that they were talking about the three aussie women in room 122. Being a priority privelege member for some years I expected better i dont mind saying. The first room we were placed in was on the 20th floor, lovely outlook, so out we went onto the balcony to take a better look, in the corner was a pile of cigarette butts, if this was the only thing you could forgive this, however on returning back to the room one of us went to the bathroom and to our disgust it was not clean, then to our horror dogpoo walked into the carpet at the entrance of the room, (not on our shoes we checked)we picked up our belongings and went back down stairs to reception and requested another room but this time a clean one. Down to the 9th floor now and again to a room that was not clean, we rang down and got the toilet cleaned and asked for extra amenities as we had 3 staying in the room that was set up for 2, about 5 hours later and 3 phone calls down to housekeeping we got our rollaway bed so we could then go to bed, pulled down the covers to one of the beds and it had sand in it, the sheets were not crisp and clean like the other bed so it appears someone had been sleeping in it. I know by now reading this you are thinking we are wingers or mental ! But we are not, we actually took photos of all I have listed and more. In the morning after a closer inspection of our room and the disorganised mess in the restaurant where they serve breakfast if you could call it that, they had run out of most on offer for breakfast, it was only 9am and breakfast is served until 10.30am, so we decided we were not going to stay another night there we had another 7 nights left and couldnt bear the thought that this is as good as it gets. Downstairs we trot and ask what their policy is for cancelling as we had booked through an agent this time, the girl on the desk set about to find us a more suitable room-we never did find out their policy if they have one, anyway she showed us a couple on the beach wing side that had been refurbished, they were a marked improvement on what we had stayed in the previous night so we agreed since they were making an effort to rectify the problems we would give them a chance. We should have checked out then and there, the breakfast didnt improve the service whilst pleasant in the restaurant was not attentive we actually had to find someone for the bill and we had been in the restaurant for 2 hours and only offered one drink at the beginning of our meal, the food was nice at lunchtime and the cocktails reasonable. Then next door they had a nightclub open, 8am in the morning they were practicing and doing soundchecks, this wasnt the hotels fault but it wasnt pleasant the noise was loud we actually thought it was in the room next door not a property away, that started again about 7pm and lucky for all the guests at Holiday Inn a thunderstorm came in at about 11pm and because the stage area was outside the noise had to stop, who knows what time the night club goes to every night now.
We have stayed at the Park Royal, Bayview Beach and Golden Sands and would choose any of those over Holiday Inn, sad because in Australia we choose to stay at Holiday Inn over most other hotels. I read in another review of this hotel they were offered compensation for noise from a wedding lucky you, they didn't even offer us an apology, they just told us that the tower is due to be refurbished in the coming months and the pool area is going to be upgraded, that should help its not very appealling just a big rectangle viewed by all in the restaurant and lobby bar area, nowhere to lie around on a sunbed without being looked at by all restaurant guests. Do yourself a favour and dont stay at Holiday Inn, its not even a cheaper option with priority privelege.

We stayed 2 times in this hotel, one in the tower another in the beach side and we can say in both cases the rooms and bathrooms are good and the hotel in general seems ok.. The service is good also but the breakfast with lots of things was not so good for our taste. The hotel is located at Batu Ferringhi and not at Georgetwon what for us was not a vantage. If you want to travel in Penang to go to Langkawi it is not the best place but can be an option.

Our stay far exceeded expectations. We had booked the cheapest rate (on the Holiday Inn website) for a tower room with hill view and on arrival we were upgraded to a sea view room (I had joined the priority club when booking as recommended by others on TA). From our large room on the 20th floor the view was spectacular over the beach and hills.

We didn’t have breakfast included in our rate and found nearby restaurants (such as Jewel of the North) offered a selection of breakfast options (including toast, eggs and even baked beans for the Brits!) for a very small price.

The pool area was better than expected – large pool and always plenty of sunloungers. We used the pool bar once during happy hour but as two small local beers still cost us nearly 30MYR we didn’t do that again! We did eat at the bar once but again it was the dearest meal we had all holiday.

As others have noted, the beach area is busy with watersports but it didn’t really affect our stay as we tended to stay on the loungers on the grass overlooking the sea. We were disappointed by the lack of entertainment in the hotel – the activities programme included water volleyball etc but nothing happened on the 5 days we were there. That said the pool did have a volleyball net to play your own game and there was table tennis and a well equipped gym to keep us occupied.

On an evening the market was great (literally on your doorstep) and we intended to try the local restaurants but instead ended up each night at the Long Beach hawker market (two minute walk past the ship). If you run out of cash at the market there is a bank/ATM at the shops near the traffic lights (near KFC). After Long Beach and shopping we spent most evenings in Sunset Bistro which was pretty full at around 11pm (beer about 9MYR / cocktails 20MYR).

We used the hotel shuttle to go into Georgetown and caught a taxi back – think it cost about 30 MYR.

Apart from the cost of drinks / food and the lack of entertainment I thought the hotel was great for location and quality of rooms – especially given the low rates available on the website. I would therefore recommend it as a value for money base in Batu Ferrenghi.

There is very quiet and convenience. The room rate is not so expensive. I think good choice to stay there.

Great ride from Georgetown to Batu Ferringgi, clifftops one side, ocean on the other. Hotel has 2 sections, Beach Tower and Ferringgi tower- connected by an overhead walkway. Rooms in Ferringgi Tower a bit cheaper- we were on 6th floor and had an ocean view anyway. Big room, well lit, great bathroom with tub and separate shower area ( with one of those shower heads where you can choose different flows).
My friend went on the 'Viper' twice- a ride on a blown up tube pulled by a speedboat- she loved it ( RM30 for a 10 min ride). I took the parasailing taster flight ( RM55 for 5 mins)- both advertised from the hotel. The pool is clean and big, lots of lounges around the pool but also many on the grassy area facing the beach, shaded by lots of trees, lovely place to lounge for the day.
The hotel has many acitivities but they don't always run them( as dependant on enough guests signing up to run it )which is a shame). Breakfast is not incl in room deal, and cost RM 42 each, so we opted out and instead at at local places for about RM5.
We booked via booking.com and got a great room rate deal.
There's lots of stalls in the night market lining the street just outside the hotel. Great internet place ( RM 2 for 1 hour) in the shopping centre near the street lights, walk out of hotel, head back towards Georgetown, at the first set of lights, about 200m up, turn right, the mall is on the right. Also has a KFC on the left for those who need their fast food fix.

We stayed here for 2 nights in January on a short break and were given a sea view room on the 9th floor tower with a balcony.

The room was very spacious with 2 double beds and bathroom with bath and separate shower. The lift lobby area had a lemongrass incence burner which made it feel like a spa and was a nice touch.

We were sufficiently high up to not hear the hustle of the night market that sets up every night but were right on our doorstep.

Drinks in the bar pool were quite expensive RM20+ considering we just had local beers but the pool was lovely and plenty of sun loungers to share around in the 32c sunshine!
