Holiday Inn Resort Penang
Ranked #3 of 10 Hotels in Batu Ferringhi
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed February 1, 2010

Just had 8 days in this hotel as our relaxing week after seeing the citys of south east asia.

The site is split into two halves, the beachside building where the main restaurant and bar is along with the games room and kiddie play room, and the main Ferringhi Tower, which is across the main road but connected to the beachside by a walkway from the first floor. Access back into this tower from the walkway is by room key reader on the wall by the door, so security is very good. The tower side has it's own reception on ground floor and the Gym is located there, again accessed by your room key.

The staff are very friendly and helpful, nothing is too much trouble for them.

We had a sea view room on the 23rd floor of the tower, excellent views across to mainland Malaya and onto the beach and streets below. The room had a huge bathroom with walk in shower, bath, basin etc. There were two double beds in the room, a tv with good selection of channels, hairdryer, tea and coffee facilities, ironing board and iron, and, being a muslim country, a prayer mat with an arrow on the ceiling pointing to mecca, a facility i didn't require, but some may.

You get free wi-fi, which works with the iPhone and doesn't clock up your data usage. You also get the cable to plug into a laptop.

The food is good and very varied, the drinks are reasonably priced, although a walk out will find you cheaper one's.

The pool area is well appointed with showers, towels, water sports etc. The beach is on the doorstep with Jet Skiing, Paracending, Bananas, fishing trips, horse riding, quad bikes and massage facilities, all payable at a reasonable price. You can swim in the sea but beware the jelly fish!!!!!

Sunbeds are very comfortable, you can get some very good shade from the trees in the grounds too as it can get a bit warm.

The whole resort is very clean and tidy.

I will probably re-write this review at somepoint when i'm not so jet-lagged, only got back from there today, but i can say that the points i've made won't change, the place is excellent and i can't wait to go back there again.

Try a fishing trip from the beach and ask to go with Captain Dino. What a guy. And ladies it's not just fishing, he takes you to monkey beach as well for a swim and a BBQ if you want one, it's worth the 250 ringit to see the beach with its abandoned houses and the monkeys. There's also a walk you can do to a light house that takes two hours throught the Rain Forest, so don't forget your DEET, and water.

Enjoy.

Good hotel and good service -- but if you travel with small kids the beach is really dangerous. Here's the main problem: Holiday Inn for some reason ($$!) rents out space along side their hotel to "an independent" water sports operator (jet skis, parasail, etc.). In the morning, the operator marks off the public beach with sandbags and uses it as their launch / landing pad for the parasails. Meanwhile paying guests (& the public) get chased away and must either move further down the beach or be content with swimming pool. If you love laying on lounges all day, the parasail activity provides entertainment -- however if you are like many people and go to the beach to GO TO THE BEACH, then you will be very disappointed.

My kids wanted to play in the sand, build sand castles, etc. - but they were in constant risk of decapitation from the parasail rope! No kidding. After a lot of tears, they spent most of the stay at the Kidz Club.

Well-located with clean spacious rooms, although the facilities look slightly run-down, especially after you turn on the TV - poor reception etc. We encountered a sudden power outage for our room, and it took quite sometime - more than 20 minutes - for the staff to restore the electricity supply to our room.

Overall, pleasant with friendly staff services.

This is a typical, generic, resort hotel with nothing much to write about it. It is very far away from Georgetown which is where all the sights are.The breakfast room was a mayhem and chaotic and dirty, and teh staff could barely keep up with the hordes of guests who all appeared and acted as if they had descended from famished Africa. The breakfast choices were the usual processed food items with very limited to none vegetarian items.

The property is very good - location is on the beacch. Stayed for two nights, ushered the new year from this hotel. Stayed in the Tower wing, which is not on the beach, across the road but linked with a elevated private crossing. The beach is nice, although full of "private beach sports" sellers. It may not be easy to swim and play in the waters, as the horses and the beach sports activities are an impediment

The Hotel has arrangments with a particular beach sports people which is also priced reasonable

The Hotel had a new party package, at RM 188++, which appeared very pricey, so avoided and partied at one of the numerous hotels on the beach front. Managed a fun-filled party and dinner at less than half the price. The scene at the beach was also good at midnight, with lots of fire crackers and people.

The Hotel is a good property, Took a family room - spacious overlooking the sea at the 16th floor. The Hoousekeeping was good and the facilities at the Hotel is also very good. Did not use the restaurant, as the night bazaar is great spot to mix in the evening - shops, restaurants etall

Overall the hotel is excellent for staying on the beach front at Batu Ferringi. Service is good and they provide free parking for cars as well

We spent a week in the tower block facing away from the beach, no view of the beach, but for us, who cares, we have spent the day on the beach. The hotel attract mainly familes, with the exception one 22-year old male with pierced nipples. (sorry but he did "stand out")

The clientele were 15% Malaysian, 35% Chinese, 30% Indian, 10% Arab, 4% 40 + Europeans with young Asian wives, 5% Australians and 1% Germans.

1. Rooms
Room 1834 was spotlessly clean and plenty of towels provided.
The bath plug was missing (who would steal a bath plug?) So intiially we couldn't have a bath. The shower worked, but the shower outlet pipe leaked down the wall. Not a problem for me, but it will cause dampness behind the wall. Asked for a bath plug and received one within hours. No problem. Didn't need to use the Gym because it took all my strength to open the glass sliding doors to the balcony. Small point, but we got used to it . Door slider runners need repair or maintenace.

2 Food
At weekend the breakfast buffet gets crowded, but don't worry the manager and staff will get you seated quickly. The quality and quantity of food is excellent. Many types of eggs, You can ask one of the chefs to customize your omelete to your liking. Very fast, but the tall Chinese chef has to be told that pointing his finger at you does not equate to "how would you like your omelete." Snack and bar food is of good quality, but slow. Happy hour on drinks is 30% rather than 50%.

3.Staff
The Malay, Chinese and Indian staff are the hotel's biggest asset. They are very pleasant and helpful and obviously appreciate when guests say "please" or thank you ". My evaluation of staff customer care is not limited to how they treated me, or my family, but, also how they reacted to rude arrogant guests. Observe and you will notice they are skilled.

4. Hotel Water Sports
Para-sailing, banana boat, jet skis. Generally well priced. Some other vendors are a bit cheaper. Bargain for at least 10% on watersports. We spent Christmas day on Monkey island, fished and had a BBQ, very pleasant and no jelly fish. Tony the Chinese sales man will help you with water sports suggestions and options. He will notice your arrival and appoach you in the hotel beachfront garden.

5 Major Annoyances (arrogant guests)
Guests in Mercedes, BMWs and Toyota Land cruisers angled parked cars on the footpath, outside the hotel entrance. This forces guests to walk on the road.

Some guests refuse to queue for check-out. (All the same nationality but can't mention due to VT rules) We watched a person making a rugby tackle at the hotel staff who is currently dealing with a waiting customer. One young Indian male staffmember on reception in the towerblock tactfully directed one lady to the back of the queue. She went back and then did a replica rugby tackle at another staff member behind the counter. The mistake he made, was give her priority, by dealing with her while 6 other people waited patiently.

Conclusion: The hotel is family focused-honeymooners beware. Some redecoration has been done, the rooms and facilities are clean and with breakfast included, it is value for money. We are former regular Golden Sands devotees, but didnt return due to reduced facilities and overpriced rooms / food.

The staff at Holiday Inn are very good and that is what made our stay enjoyable. The nearby local rivers that run into the sea are filthy and laden with garbish. Not the hotel's problem, but the local government charged you 10% local tax. They should clean up their dirty rivers.

Dont hire a moped unless you are a thrill seeker with good health insurance. Maintenance on hired motorcycles / mopeds is not good and you need efficient brakes. Kami-kaze motorcyclist and taxi drivers are part of the local attractions. Use the hotel limos in the tower block, they are clean, well priced and drivers do not drive like escaped, drug-crazed convicts.
Good place, Malays are generally very friendly and the Curry Kapitan excellent. Nightmarket is good. Hawker food is cheap, but you get what you pay for. Take a rickshaw ride, its worth it and their prices are fair. Enjoy before it gets over -developed.

We found the hotel excellent value staying on a room only basis. The gardens and pool are fine. The beach area however is very noisy during our visit as it is used as a race track with beach buggies, jet skies motor boats disturbing the pease.
The buffet breakfast was first class. Since it was on the expensive side we found a delightfull little friendly family run Caffee/restaurant' about 50 yards across the road,
offering a very satisfactory ala carte breakfast menu at quarter of the price.
Ron the men's shop close by is a good contact for chauffeur driven reasonable priced excursions.
Leaving the hotel to the right you will find within 200 yards a good chioce of restaurants.
Our favourite was the food hall turning left from the hotel. It is a 400 yard walk along the interesting nightly market to reach it. The place is packed with around 300 people or more eating food at the best value on communal formica tables from around 20 or so different outlets around the court. A facinating experience not to be missed.
If the flight from London would be a little less we would have no hessitation to visit the area again.
