Holiday Inn Resort Penang
Ranked #3 of 10 Hotels in Batu Ferringhi
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed September 8, 2008

My extended family ( 3 generations) recently stayed 4 nights at the Holiday Inn at Batu Ferringhi. We were spread between the Ferringhi Tower and the Beach wing so got a good feel for both parts of the hotel.
My parents stayed in the Ferringhi Tower. Their room was modern and spacious and they had a magnificent view from the 16th floor. The balcony was a nice size for the two of them to enjoy the view of the ocean and mountains while they had their pre-dinner drinks.
The rest of us were in the Beach Wing. The rooms on the beach side are older but still comfortable and large (two adults, a baby and a small child fit into one room without problems).
We had a balcony room in the beach wing which was a little older again but it had wood floors, clean bathroom, plenty of storage space and an absolutely huge balcony which had two sun loungers and loads of space - we could have invited 20 people for a party. We had a lovely view but be warned it's scorching on the balcony in the afternoon.
We all loved the pool and the sun lounge area and didn't bother with the beach as we have all visited Penang before and knew the beach is quite a busy stretch. The pool itself isn't shaded but plenty of the loungers are and the waiters and bar by the pool are very welcome. Some of us availed of the massage area near the pool.
My 4 year old niece loved the kid's club and was kept busy with kid's movies, painting and all sorts of activities.
We didn't eat at the hotel as there is so much fantastic food to be had in Penang for great prices.....I would recommend Roti Canai for breakfast to the right of the hotel, also the chinese at Bayusenga (?). The hawkers to the left up near Lone Pine is excellent.
The staff were very friendly and helpful and I would recommend the Holiday Inn for someone looking for a family-friendly holiday that won't break the bank.

When we arrived, we were allocated a room which had just had its carpet washed. Unfortunately, because of the humidity, the wet carpet never really dried out but got increasingly smelly as our stay progressed. The smell went from the earthy aroma of wet dog to an all out rotten stink. I heard at least two other guests complaining about the smell in their room so this was not an isolated case.
The hotel is billed as being family-friendly but the beach is a complete death-trap for children. The first issue is the jet ski rental right outside the hotel. There is no safe area for swimming so swimmers and jet skis vie for space. Needless to say, we did not let our daughter swim. The beach itself is very small but this does not stop at least a dozen horses and as many four-wheel beach buggies weaving in between kids playing on the sand. We could not let our guard drop for a second while our daughter was playing with her bucket and spade. I am not a fuss-pot mum: this beach is really dangerous.
The swimming pool is okay, as is the kids club but they are not special enough to overcome the major shortcomings outlined above.
The main asset for this hotel is the staff. They are an absolute credit – always smiling, happy and willing to help.

I stayed in the Tower wing of the Holiday Inn in early July. The newer tower wing is fresh and the rooms are clean and bright; it is connected to the beach wing and all amenities such as the pool, restaurant etc. by a skybridge.
With all amenities across the road, the tower block is very quiet (or was during our brief stay) - so there are pluses as well as minuses for being such a distance from the centre of the hotel action. The bed was very comfy and I really liked the lightweight 'quilt' that is provided - cosier than a single cotton sheet but just the right weight for the air conditioned room.
Breakfast was nice on the open air terrace and the pool area is relaxed and quite peaceful. I really enjoyed the lounges that were placed under the trees and close to the beach but away from the pool - a perfect spot for a cool drink and a book!
The night market was on the doorstep of the hotel, stretching along the main road - highly recommended for some shopping and for some great food.
In summary, this hotel is well priced and comfortable. If you are looking for luxury, try elsewhere but for a decent place for a short stay it worked for me.

Made our sixth visit and as always the staff are fantastic room on the 4th Floor Beach Wing in excelllent condition and beatifully cleaning each day. The breakfasts excellent though for a change visit the Batu Ferringi Cafe turn right at the BW reception head away from the centre and on the same side as the Holiday Inn about 400yds you find this "Cafe" the food is great both for breakfast and I would highly recommend the evening dinner menu. We decided to eat there most nights the other places I would recommend would be the North of India Restaurant or for a special treat the buffet on a Friday night at the Lone Pine Hotel with free flow of wine, worth every ringgit. The only slight disappointment this Year was that the Bar was being rebuilt and we missed sitting there talking to the Barman and Waiters at Happy Hour. Another slight criticism was the food in the couple of meals we had in the Hotel Restaurant was not as good as in previous Years. But that's the only slight fault in three weeks' wonderful holiday. I cant speak highly enough of the wonderful staff members in reception, dining and bar areas, pool staff and cleaning staff nothing was too much trouble. Roll on next Year.

we stayed at this hotel for 7 nights in June 08. Our family, of 2 adults and 3 teenagers, had booked 2 rooms ferringhi tower, hill view, on arrival we were told we had been upgraded to the ferringhi tower, beach view.
the rooms were massive, the biggest I have ever seen, one room had a king size bed in it, some furniture and a balcony, the other interconnecting room had a king size bed and a double.
everything was very clean, and the bed was very comfortable. the people at the hotel were always polite and friendly, and went out of their way to help you with any concerns or problems.
the pool furniture was all replaced while we were there, and it certainly inproved the look of the area.
the breakfast was fantastic, however they really need 2 people cooking the eggs, as the line up could get a little long.
the location was fantastic, with the markets at your doorsteps, we were on the 14th floor, and could not hear them at all unless we went outside.
the room cleaners were brilliant, and every day cleaned up our extremely messy rooms, and restocked all the toiletries. a daily paper was delivered each day also.
we caught many buses into georgetown from directly accross the road, and it only cost MYR2 each. the hotel also has a shuttle bus for MYR7 each/each way. as their were 5 of us we decided to pay the 20MYR return instead of the 70MYR return, but if their were fewer people, we would have caught the shuttle bus.
this hotel definatley helped to make our holiday a very pleasurable experience.

We recently had two nights staying in the Ferringhi Tower, seaview. A great stay indeed. Very comfortable rooms; good size balcony and very clean.

Excellent buffet breakfast was offered by the pool; nicest waffles!!

Both nights we sat on the balcony watching the sun go down and trying to get the perfect snap (we did). A magic view.

The location is very handy. Staff were friendly although check in was slower than I would expect. This would be my only criticism but we are very patient people so was not an issue.

We used a HI driver to collect us from airport; he was very good and openly told us lots of information, history, etc on the drive to the HI. Asked him for recommendation for good Indian food and he suggested Khaleel, near Eden Parade. We had a lunch of 4 Roti Canai, 1 banana pancake with ice cream, 1 cone shaped drizzled with honey (I think) and one can of coke for a total of 11 Rm (less than AU$4.00). Great value and great taste.

Enjoyed the stay at Batu Ferringhi but not nearly long enough!

My wife and I travel to Malaysia every year. We always make a point of staying in the Holiday Inn when in Penang. The staff and service is always top notch. The best part about the stay is the massage (Make sure it is Taliab)YOU HAVE TO TRY IT.

One little point, compared to some of the other hotels the Inn is getting a little dated. Please Holiday Inn spend some cash and do it up. :-)
