We were travelling with family and had four rooms booked overall. On check in at 3pm, we were told that three out of four rooms were ready but ours wasn't. We got an apology and were told it would be ready in an hour but that was it. We went to one of the other rooms and waited for an hour but heard nothing so we phoned reception and were told that it had been made up, they were just waiting for the supervisor to check it. After another half hour, we phoned again to be told that the porter was just coming up with the key. When we finally got into our room after 5pm (and three hours after published check-in time), our loo didn't work so we had to go down to reception again. So we ended up in an upgraded (basically the same but larger) room on a completely different floor to the rest of our party.

After the hassle with the rooms, the hotel was average. Breakfast is served in an open air area where birds can fly in and walk under and on the tables of guests who have left their plates behind. The buffet food itself is mostly not covered or chilled which can be a little unpleasant.

The hotel is well situated along Batu Ferringhi, the night market stalls start just outside and it backs onto the beach which is fairly clean but not pristine. WiFi is free but patchy.

The pool was across the walkway over the road in the other building which we knew when we booked but we preferred the Ferrenghi Tower because it is quieter at night. The pool and surrounding area was lovely.

Room Tip: The Ferrenghi tower is across the walkway from where the pool is and where they serve breakfast but...

We stayed here for 4 nights en route from London to Sydney. We arrived at midday, reception were really efficient and our room was ready! We had a room in the Tower building, kingsize bed anda balcony with a seaview. Apart from a poor shower, the room was excellent. Breakfast was included in our deal and that was also excellent, a wide choice of buffet food and good tea/coffee service. The restaurant did get busy by 10.00am but since were eating by 7.30am that didn't cause us any problem. Tips 1. Join the Holiday Inn Priority Club and get a late (2.00pm) checkout and a free fruit cocktail drink. 2. Stay in the Tower block. It's no great effort to pop over to the Beach block for the restaurant and the pool. It's quieter and smarter. 3. Eat at the Long Beach Cafe...especially the Chinese food stall..the best chinese I've ever had and sooooo cheap.

It is often hard to get a room for a family of five but here at the holiday inn they have a great room with a triple bunk fir the kids and a play station. It is not a deluxe resort but it is very family friendly and it is in a great location. The kids enjoyed free daily kids activities and the pool volley ball nets are a hit.when you are accommodating a family of five it is very good value. We stayed here seven years ago and I enjoyed it more the second time around. Be sure to book a room in the beach wing.

We really enjoyed the service, food, amenities, location & pretty much everything about this hotel. We liked it a lot more than both Phuket & Fiji. Highly recommended. Only down side was that you couldn't swim in sea due to jellyfish, not sure if this is a seasonal problem. Night markets right outside hotel & lots of places to eat within walking distance. Public buses also easy to use & stop right outside hotel

Our family (my wife and I and our two sons ages 6 & 8) stayed at this resort for just over a week. The only member of our family that had previously visited Penang was myself, but that was many decades ago when I was a young child. Therefore, practically, we were all new visitors to Penang.

There are two wings to the property, a Beach Wing and a Tower Wing that is located across the street from the beach. The management has constructed an overpass to enable guests to traverse the street easily and safely. We booked fairly far in advance and were able to secure a Family Suite in the Tower Wing for 4800 MYR (non refundable rate) for 9 nights (we discovered that part of our stay was during a school holiday period in Malaysia). The room was a generous size; however, the quality of the actual furnishings and fittings were more 3 star than 4 star (and definitely not 5 star). We generally try to book suites with separate bedrooms as our our children generally go to sleep earlier than we do and with separate bedrooms, they can fall asleep in the darkness while we watch television without the noise and light disturbing them. We were disappointed to discover that although there was a separate bedroom area with a large, reasonably comfortable king sized bed, we were surprised to see there wasn't a door between the bedroom area and the area with the twin beds where our sons were sleeping. Also we noticed that there is a 1 foot gap from the top of the partition wall to the ceiling so that even if a door were installed between the two rooms, noise and light would pass through the top of the wall. I have marked the room as being poor due to the lack of privacy.

The public areas are mediocre. The main pool has some physical condition issues (damaged and missing tiles, some stains) and is simply a large rectangle with no notable features (no slides, diving boards etc). Our kids didn't try the small kids pool area because it seemed so small. There was a ping pong table available for use (somewhat run down condition) that our sons enjoyed trying. I visited the games room which had a very small pool table and the kids club area was small and our kids only did one activity for a couple hours at the kids club throughout our 9 day stay. All in all, the public facilities seemed like they had seen better days and the quality of the amenities were lacklustre.

The service levels at the resort were generally OK; however, we did have an incident during our stay where water started leaking from the ceiling at a steady pace onto our carpeted floor. When we called the front desk and told them about the problem, they said they would have someone rectify the situation. 20 minutes later, no one had arrived (and the water was leaking steadily leaving a 2 foot plus wet spot on the carpet). I had to call again and express the urgency of the situation before someone arrived. When they arrived, they repaired the leak and used a wet vacuum to remove the majority of the water on the carpet. However, the carpet was still quite damp for some time and no one took the initiative to offer us a change in room. It was only when I called down to the front desk inquiring if a room change were available did they offer that option. Ultimately, because we didn't want to go through the inconvenience of packing everything up (no one offered any assistance to pack up and move our belongings if we wanted to change rooms) and because it appeared that the original leak had indeed been repaired, we stayed in our room and eventually the carpet dried out.

The food quality at the resort is not great, but OK. We tried the breakfast buffet (which is reasonably priced at 30 MYR per adult with children eating free). The range of offerings was quite good, but quality was only average. Also, because there was Malaysian school holiday, there breakfast area was quite jammed and seating was at a premium. We also tried a lunch and afternoon drinks at the property. Poor value for money when compared with the food offerings just outside on the street but at least the variety was different from the street food.

The best part of this property is the location -- on the beach and in the midst of the local night market. However, the excellent location within Batu Ferringhi is somewhat let down by Batu Ferringhi itself. Although the local street food is decent, it pales in comparison in both variety and quality with the street food scene in nearby Georgetown. Similarly, the beach in Batu Ferringhi is nothing to write home about. The various beach motorized activities that occur on the beach don't make it a conducive site for just lying down on the sand and relaxing. In fact, even though I had some good massages on the beach in front of the property, each session was undermined by the sounds of various motorized and machinery activity (I think someone was building something close by during one of the sessions). Also, the water was quite murky compared with other beach locations we have visited. When reading various traveller reviews, it seems that there are several much more beautiful beach areas in Malaysia.

In retrospect, for future "beach and foodie" trips to Malaysia, I suspect we will change our itinerary to spend a few days in Georgetown for our food fix and then travel elsewhere to one of the more untouched beach areas in Malaysia for sun and surf. Even if we were to stay in Batu Ferringhi in the future, I suspect we will want to try another resort.

We stayed in the Ferrenghi tower part of the hotel across the main Batu Ferrenghi road. The room was excellent with a king size and a queen size bed large flat screen tv and a balcony with fantastic views over the sea and the jungle. We have nothing bad to say about the room. The staff were very friendly and could not do enough for. The location is excellent with night market on your doorstep and many cafes bars and restaurants nearby. The local bus stops right outside the hotel and enables you to travel to other parts of Penang.

The downside is that the property looks dated from the outside and the swimming pool area is a remnant from the eighties and could do with a total refurbishment. Breakfast time was chaotic with children left to run about around the tables and you had to be especially careful if you are taking back hot drinks to the table.

Would we go back ?? Definitely.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the tower with a balcony, these have all been refurbished.

The hotel was decent, however, for the price, you can find much better accomodations as the hotel is generally just a bit tired and was not impressed with the food. Many reviews have mentioned this hotel as a great location in Batu Ferrenghi, that is true. However, I would take one step back and recommend travelers take a second thought at staying in Batu Ferrenghi. To me it was very touristy and crowded. If you are staying here because you want to be on the beach, that's fine...but for a beach vacation in Malaysia you should check out the more beautiful smaller islands. If you are in Penang for the food/historic districtic (which we were), in hindsight, would have been a better fit to stay in Georgetown. By staying here, we spent two hours on the bus every day in exchange for a mediocre beach location.
