“The best hotel by far in Penang!”
Reviewed January 26, 2011

The hotel is wonderful and the staff even better!! Lots of smiles and very professional in their tasks. Very nice rooms, very clean.
Fab swimming pool with very helpful staff - a special mention to Harun and Kamarrol who always rushed to get us towels and chairs each day. Very child friendly - Lily our 7yr old was well looked after by all. Do have a foot massage here and ask for Jackie, a lovely man and excellent at what he does (even stopped my husband snoring!)

Great place to chill out, right on the beach, sister hotel The Golden Sands next door adds another place to frequent, great pools, Gym, Spa, Food, Bars & Exceptional friendly service from everyone. Not cheap but worth the treat.

Got off to a very bad start when we were shown our "hillview" Rasa room. A car park directly beneath us and the main road in front - you could plainly see and hear cars going past. TV was ancient and there was no music facility in the room. It was so far from the image of what I had in mind I was horrified. Room reminded me of a US motel room. I was quickly (rather too quickly??) offered the opportunity to upgrade to a different room. As we had already paid to upgrade to Rasa and we were only staying a few days - I didn't upgrade and so don't know what "better room" was like nor what upgrade cost was.

However, that is where disappointment ended. There are 4 main advantages to being in Rasa Wing and they really did make the holiday:-

Use of Rasa Wing pool (no kids allowed). Lovely big pool and great staff who regularly wandered around with cool towels, fresh fruit kebabs, iced water and taking orders for drinks/lunch. Complimentary soft drinks and coffee thro'out the day. Excellent friendly staff.

Use of Grill for breakfast. Quiet and peaceful. It may not have had as big a choice as Spice Cafe (which we never tried) but had enough for us. Nice service and good selection of fresh fruit/breads etc.

Afternoon Tea. From 3-4pm each day - tea was served for Rasa guests. Beautifully presented with delicious sandwiches, tasty, interesting scones with fresh cream and strawberries, and delightful cakes. The wonderful Chan presented it all on 3-tiered plates and always with a happy cheerful smile. Extras were always offered tho' we never felt the need to eat any more than we were initially given.

Cocktails and canapes from 6-7pm. Once again, the excellent Chan played a superb host and ensured glasses were never empty and guests were well looked after. Chan is a huge asset to this hotel. He really went out of his way to make sure guests were happy.

We ate dinner twice at Fer ringhi Grill and food was excellent: - in fact best dinners we had during our time in Malaysia.

This hotel completely won us over with the quality of their staff.

My husband , 11 year old daughter and I stayed in the Garden wing recently. We were upgraded from a garden wing suite to a junior suite which was on top floor 2 connecting rooms with one of the rooms having a kitchenette, dining area, double bathroom, separate spa bath surrounded by glass windows looking out onto beautiful private garden and patio area with sunlounges as well as 2 balconies. The rooms were immaculate, the room was serviced by Hossain who did an amazing job and took pride in his work. All staff were exceptionally friendly. The pool staff were fabulous and we enjoyed many lunches and drinks in this relaxing area. We loved the pool and thought the temperature of the water was perfect. We didn't miss the beach as we had done our homework and were aware of the jelly fish and the presence of the water sports etc in the area. My daughter enjoyed batik painting with Ray and even found a surprise gift included with her painting when it was delivered to her. We were celebrating our 15th wedding anniversary and received a fruit basket which was refilled each day and a great bottle of wine. The buffet breakfast and service was terrific. We ate outside the resort most nights for the experience of trying the local hawker centre and other restaurants. A few nights we were driven to the gate by one of the gorgeous concierge staff. The week at the Rasa Sayang was a great end to our 3 weeks holiday. Our experience definitely measured up to or surpassed 5 star hotels we have stayed in, in many places. We found nothing wanting and we would return. We would stay at Shangri La resorts in future based on our experience here.

we were part of a group of 6 families holidaying together, with 18 children ranging in age from 3 - 17, and this resort worked for all of us. Although the rooms (at least in the garden wing) are a little tired and dated, the facilities and service at the resort more than made up for it. it is great that you have access to the facilities and activities at the golden sands hotel next door so there was plenty to keep the kids occupied, while the rasa sayang pool stayed quiet. Food was of a very high standard, and reasonably priced. To be walking distance to the night market and a range of restaurants, pharmacies, laundry service etc was a huge bonus, as was the beach front location with inexpensive water sports at your doorstep. Heard a rumour they are introducing a new pool chair reservation system - something about buckets and spades?!?

Week one of our two week honeymoon was spent relaxing in the Garden Wing at the Shangri La Rasa Sayang Resort. It turned out to be the perfect tonic. The Garden Wing is less formal than the impressive Rasa wing, but for us it was the better choice. Oh, just to set this review in context, we are both seasoned travellers and are fully aware of the vagracies of the hotel star rating system. To start, this is an excellent 5 star hotel. The staff, as many have quoted, are excellent, eager to help and there when you need them. We had some problems with what the Virgin Holidays brochure promised and what the hotel were informed to supply. An example was the compulsary Gala dinner that didnt exist...no wonder Virgin holidays were evasive despite our many requests for its formal inclusion on our itienery. Patrick, the front office manager, stepped up to the plate and sorted everything!
The pictures dont do the hotel justice. The grounds are suberb and well manicured. Facilites are also impressive catering for the get fit types as well as the post wedding sun bed potatoes! Oh, sun beds! They say you cant reserve but it is best to chuck a towel down at breakfast. There was a large group of Aussies who occupied a prime corner backing onto the beach so you may not have to play the sunbed challenge....there are in fact plenty to go round. Anyway good relations were maintained with the occupants of Kangeroo corner and I even managed not to mention the Cricket Test......that often!
Breakfast was included and catered for every possible taste even if sushi, fried eggs, dim sum and maple syrup is your thing...all excellently prepared!
We were upgraded to an excellent room that was fresh, well maintained and cleaned daily. All that you would expec from the Shangri La!
There are a number of restaurants to choose from catering for all tastes. If high dining is you thing then it is the Ferringi Grill for you. Impressive food but not my thing. However, the real jewel for us was the beach bar. Azam, SunnyTan (yes that is his name), Sheik, Barry and the rest made our stay perfect. It is the perfect bar, set next to the beech, amidst the palms. Expensive enough to deter drop ins, but reasonable enough, RM15 for a beer (about 3/4 of a pint) to keep well refreshed. The food at the bar was excellent as well. Lunch or dinner rarely exceeded RM150 including drinks, although that was during Happy Hour! In fact the bar and the great staff became the centre of our stay!
The public beech that backs onto the hotel is a little noisey. Jet skis, quad bikes et al. But it just belnds in to the point I started not to notice. It is at the quieter end of the beech.
A first rate hotel that was perfect for us and one that I would recommend for a relaxing stay!

We stayed in the Rasa Wing which is a fantastic 5 star experience
First the few negatives:
1/ The beach: It is quite bizarre as you walk onto the attractive enough beach and NO-ONE is in the sea swimming. It is certainly attractive enough (though not world class) and I did go for a swim (more of a dip really as I was scouting for jellyfish but I didn't see any) 3 times but due to the signs warning about jellyfish you can't really relax. I suspect loads of other beaches around the world have just as much Jellyfish but the hotel is just protecting themselves by having the warnings. More annoying are the motorised watersports although I think some reports of the beach being a no go zone are a bit 0TT
2/ "Hill View" rooms are more accurately "Car Park View" rooms and don't have balconies. We were staying in the Rasa Wing and this was the one disapointment. I didn't kick up a fuss though as everything else about the room was fantastic

Now the positives
1/ Rooms: The styling and decor of the Rasa Wing rooms are absolutely stunning from the lighting, materials, bathrooms etc.
2/ Service and Ambience: Outstanding warm and efficient service (in the Rasa Wing, can't speak for the other section). Lovely relaxing public areas. Staff did there best to help us get our luggage from Air France who lost it for 10 days! Basically they'll do anything for you
3/ Great Pools and Facilities including decently kitted out gymn, jacuzzi etc. Everything top notch and beautifully designed
4/ Lovely food in the Rasa Wing for breakfast, afternoon tea, Ferringi Grill
5/ The gardens really are amazing - they have to be seen to be believed
Make sure you go for the Rasa Wing if you are a couple, as the Garden wing seems more aimed at families (it looks great for families I have to say)
