“Wonderful service, great hotel! Rasa Wing a must for couples/friends without children.”
Reviewed June 4, 2009

I've just returned from 3 nights staying at this wonderful hotel and would like just like to say there is no better hotel in Penang to stay at. The service was impeccable and having travelled quite often you get to know what genuine friendliness and helpfulness is. The staff are super, just great, the small touches just made our stay, like the fresh fruit in the room, turndown service every night, remembering of names after just one day etc. The list goes on.

The Rasa Wing is the way to go travelling as a couple or with friends - without kids. There were some families staying in the Rasa wing and this was probably the only negative as the kids at times were noisy in the lounge during afternoon tea or pre dinner drinks. Great to have a quiet pool area to relax in, water however is quite warm.

If you can afford an upgrade to a better room do it as the hillview rooms actually face the road and trees, not really much of a hillview. But you don't really spend that much time in rooms to worry.

Chi Spa is excellent, quite pricey for the treatments however the facilities are first class.

Beach not much but that's not the hotels fault. Recommend a private half day tour booked through hotel with I-Tour - ask for Phillip - he was amazing!!!! And so cheap too, RM60 per hour.

Location of hotel for night markets is excellent as it starts just up from the hotel, recommend Jewel of the North for dinner, tasty and clean, and very cheap.

Spice Market Cafe was ok, food was plentiful but not much of an atmosphere for dinner.

All in all an excellent stay and I'd recommend it anyday.

The Rasa Wing has recently been renovated but you could be forgiven for asking "really?". The carpets and curtains are very 70's and the room size still quite small. Worth the money of RM1500 per night for the deluxe garden room with courtyard? No, not really. We ended up spending most of our time at the garden wing pool bc kids are not allowed at the rasa wing pool. The cocktails and canapes werent too appealing for us - we avoid the english "im still a colonial" crowd or worse, the loud american crowd. The service was stellar. All the people we dealt with at the hotel were marvellous with our three year old. I would recommend staying at the garden wing if your travelling with kids.

Dear Tripadvisor Member,

Greetings from all of us here at Shangri-La’s Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa!

Thank you for sharing your recent stay experience. We are pleased that our service level had been to your satisfaction.

The resort was remodelled in 2006 and it has undergone subtle evolutions ever since. The style of classic resort luxury that stays true to its Asian heritage in terms of décor and design has been synonymous with the resort since the early days.

With a revamp of our menus at all dining outlets within the resort, we hope to offer a wider set of choices for all guests ranging from international fare, fusion to regional Asian street food. Beside cocktails and canapés during happy hours, our dining outlets offer the choice of other alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages complemented by a wide range of appetisers.

Thank you again for sharing your recent stay experience with us. We look forward to serving you and your family once again during your next visit!

Thank you.

Dislikes :- hmmmmmmm difficult,If I was to be ultra critical drinks are not cheap and the beach is narrow and the water isnt crystal clear (due to a few small rivers entering the sea here)

Just back from a 10 day stay at Rasa Sayang. We had a wonderful time at this beautiful and immaculate resort.

The hotel is right on the beach at the far east side of Batu Ferringhi, its a good location although its quite a long walk along batu ferringhi road if you want to walk the whole length of the night market and some of the better restaurants but taxis and trishaws readily available.

We stayed in a garden wing room on 4th floor over looking the pool, all rooms have sea /pool views, some are just a little bit closer to the beach. We decided to wait until we arrived before deciding whether to upgrade to Rasa wing but were so happy with our room and the quietness of the resort that we didn't bother upgrading and were happy with our decision, to be honest the resort was so quiet the first week we were there i think it would have been quite lonely and boring by the rasa wing pool as we never really heard or saw anyone there. Draught tiger beer is so cheap and the drinks at happy hour (5-7pm) are half price (cocktails £3) so we didn't think it was worth the extra for Rasa wing. The pool area did get busy by the end of week 2 however as lots of aussies over for bank holiday and loads of children, we did think the rasa wing looked inviting at that point!

The breakfast buffet is the most incredible experience - i have never seen anything like it, basically any type of breakfast food from anywhere in the world including a chocolate fountain! Definitely the largest buffet you will ever see and the packed breakfast for early starts wasn't bad either. The Arabesque buffet on mon/tues eve's was very good and reasonably priced at £15 per person for all you can eat. Wine starts at £20/bottle. The pool side bar is excellent, the meals can easily be shared between 2. You get 4 complimentary bottles of water in your room every day and tap water is SAFE to drink so you can get free water at the pool bar with ice all day. The service throughout the hotel is impecable.

Our one criticism is that the hotel is quite old, around 30 years I think and although the place is spotless the room decor is a little dated. The size of the rooms however more than compensates, very large for a standard garden wing room.

The hotel gardens are stunning. Quick word on the beach; when we arrived the tide was in and there was little beach to be seen, as the week went on the amount of beach increased, this was clean and despite the comments of murky water on other posts the sea is still a gorgeous colour and not a single jelly fish in sight despite the warnings. To be honest we didn't swim in the sea because it was too warm! The pool was much more refreshing. The beach is busy and not private and hawkers of watersports will shout up from the beach to the sun lounge areas - you will be asked several times a day if you would like to jet ski which is a little irritating but they don't come into the grounds. The jet ski's can be noisy and smell of fumes.

Just a quick comment on this resort versus the Golden sands. Golden sands looked even older and much more "Benidorm", definitely much more geared up for kids and loads of beach activities. You can eat there and use the facilities, we didn't bother to be honest as Rasa Sayang too nice!

For info on Penang and Batu Feringhii see our reviews on them.

Dear Tripadvisor Member,

Greetings from all of us here at Shangri-La’s Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa!

Thank you for taking the time to write and share details of your recent stay with us. We are pleased that your stay was memorable.

We appreciate such favourable comments from you on the Garden Wing, and are pleased to inform you that the Garden Wing rooms are currently undergoing a cosmetic makeover. This is to ensure that every part of our resort looks rejuvenated.

We regret the inconvenience that you experienced due to unregulated activities along the Batu Feringgi beach. Unfortunately, the distasteful behaviour of these unregulated beach operators is beyond our jurisdiction or control, as the beach is a public area. However, the resort is working closely with the local authorities to control and monitor the situation to eliminate any distress that may be caused to our guests. Signage concerning these activities is also placed at the beachfront garden to remind guests to be mindful of these unregulated private water sport operators.

Please be informed that the Golden Sands Resort is currently undergoing a major redevelopment programme that is scheduled for completion by December 2009. Please visit the Golden Sands Resort website to view pictures of the new mock-up rooms and other facilities.

Once again, thank you for your valuable feedback. We look forward to your returning to the resort soon.

Have just returned from a week in the Rasa wing and we loved every second! The staff from the guys at the pool, to the girls in the Rasa lounge were friendly, polite and couldn't do enough for you. (Desmond if you read this please pass on our congratulations to your staff !)The room was great with a beautiful view and was made up twice a day. Probably the best thing about staying in the Rasa Wing was the adults only pool - having left 3 kids at home, it was quite a treat!! We got the same sunbeds everyday and enjoyed the fruit skewers, cold towels and iced water that would appear by your side. The cocktails were pretty good too!. Cocktails at the beach bar to watch the sunset is a must.

The hotel gardens are immaculate. The beach looks OK but no one swims because of the jelly fish. There are a few touts on the beach, but they aren't allowed inside the hotel grounds. I can't really comment on the garden wing, the pool was busy compared to the Rasa Wing, but looked nice. Batu Ferringhi itself is nothing flash, but the night markets are good fun and there are a few reasonable places to eat including the Indian, Jewel of The North. Gurney Plaza is also worth a visit for western Sytle shopping.
Overall we had a very relaxing, enjoyable holiday, my only negative and it is minor, is the lack of a decent cup of coffee, no where can make a good coffee! - there might be an opening for someone there!!

Greetings from all of us here at Shangri-La’s Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa!

Thank you for taking the time to write and share details of your recent stay experience with us. We are pleased that your stay was memorable.

Your positive feedback about our rooms, staff and services, as well as the hotel’s surroundings, will definitely inspire us to continue to provide you with the best. I will personally convey your positive feedback to the staff members at the pool as well as the Rasa Wing Lounge.

As for the Garden Wing pool, it is normally busier than the Rasa Wing pool, as it caters mostly to families, especially during school holidays, weekends and public holidays.

The unregulated activities at the beach, unfortunately, are at times beyond our control due to it being a public beach area. Nonetheless, we will continue to work closely with the local authorities to monitor this situation.

We value all of our guests’ constructive comments about the resort, which we take into consideration to ensure your utmost comfort during your stay with us.

Once again, thank you for your valuable feedback. We look forward to your returning to the resort soon.

Firstly, may I say there are two sides to this review, the garden wing and the rasa wing, I am being brutally honest in my assessment of both parts of the hotel so bare with me!

We stayed here on our honeymoon in March 09 and were booked into the Garden Wing, we didnt even bother emptying our cases and upgraded to the Rasa Wing immediately. We paid a lot of money for our trip and this leg of the journey was to be the highlight of the trip. If travelling here for a few days then garden wing would be fine but if spending more than 3 days here then I would not bother staying here, the rooms in the garden wing are no better than a holiday inn, tiny rooms in a high rise block, you could get the same standard anywhere else in Penang for a quarter of the price. The hotel are piggybacking the vastly inferior garden wing on the back of its sumptuous Rasa Wing, which frankly is hard to believe is part of the same hotel! Aside from the rooms the pool area when we were there was very busy with children and was vey noisy, if from Europe you will know what I mean when I say this place could have been any random hotel in Santa Ponsa / Magaluf etc. Aside from the ridiculous overpricing the garden wing wouldnt lend itself to a nice relaxing holiday if thats what you were after. We were greeted with a welcome drink while they checked us in and then asked us to sign for it to our room, which I thought was cheeky to say the least!

The Rasa Wing is entirely different and is absolutely worth the money. Totally different hotel in every way, in fact the annex joining the two wings of the hotel puts enough distance between the two places to make you believe you have been transformed to a totally different resort! The Rasa Wing has a private pool, afternoon tea is laid on at 3pm everyday and is FANTASTIC. A special word for the staff in the Rasa who are simply outstanding and SO friendly, a credit to the hotel and themselves. The Feringgi Grill is reasonably priced for the standard of food and is in a very romantic setting, if you were to make any criticism of the restauarant it would be the menu didnt change once in the time we were there so it becomes a bit repetitive. The service is top class also though and the breakfasts were also wonderful. The Spice Market Cafe on the garden wing side of the hotel also do a fantastic buffet every evening and have a wonderful choice of food there if you fancy something more casual.

The SPA at the hotel was also excellent and one of the better ones that I have been to again with wonderful staff. Probably a bit on the pricey side for Malaysia though.

If you read through some of the other reviews you will see someone said the resort was "grotty" (Batu Feringgi) They were spot on. Hard to believe a Shangri La would pitch one of their properties here but the resort has nothing going for it, its grotty and I wouldnt even bother leaving the hotel to have a walk outside unless you wanted a few fake bags or watches to bring home. Not the hotels fault per say, but the hotel is on a main road iat the edge of the resort and is far from the idyllic paradise beach location you might be expecting.I'm sorry but people telling you on here it has "charachter" etc. Pure rubbish. The resort was a huge disappointment and sadly has nothing to offer. Yes you can go and get cheap food in one of the hawker outlets 5 mins up the road which would be akin to dining out at a fast food van at a rock concert!

Summary - Dont bother staying in the hotel if going for the garden wing, its simply not worth the money and would be an absolute waste of time. If you want something special then go for the Rasa Wing but be preapred to pay a lot of money and also bare in mind the beach at the hotel is VERY small and littered with hawkers trying to sell jet skis etc and lacks areas for sunbathing and the resort outside the hotel is woeful.

Dear Tripadvisor Member,

Thank you very much for spending your honeymoon at Shangri-La’s Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa, Penang and sharing with us your valuable feedback. It is indeed our privilege to have served you.

We appreciate such beneficial comments from you on the Garden Wing, and are pleased to inform you that the Garden Wing rooms are currently undergoing a cosmetic makeover. This is to ensure that every part of our resort looks rejuvenated.

The Garden Wing pool is normally busier, as it caters mostly to families. During holidays, weekends and public holidays, there will be more guests around the area. The Rasa Wing pool area, however, is exclusively for Rasa Wing guests, ensuring exclusivity and privacy.

We appreciate your comments on our exclusive Rasa Wing. We are pleased to know that you enjoyed afternoon tea at the lounge. The pool at the Rasa Wing is designed to provide privacy to our guests staying there. It is crucial that we provide an enclave for our guests to unwind, free from any distractions. In addition, our staff members are committed to giving you the best service. I will certainly share your good comments with the staff members at the Rasa Wing.

We have recently revised the menus at our dining outlets and added a variety of dishes for your culinary enjoyment. Our chef at the Feringgi Grill has just recently come on board to provide you with an exciting and new gastronomic experience. A range of new dishes has also been added to the menu at the Spice Market Café.

We are pleased that you enjoyed the treatment at CHI, The Spa. Our therapists are committed to making sure that you have a fantastic experience with us.

As for the location of the resort, it was built more than 30 years ago in what was then an idyllic paradise. The beaches were immaculate. The surroundings were a picture of tranquillity and the splendour of nature. However, due to development and technology, sadly the surrounding villages have since made way for modern buildings and roads. Nonetheless, at the resort we strive to provide you with the charm of natural greenery and a relaxed ambience within our 30 acres of beautifully landscaped garden grounds, adorned with centuries-old rain trees.

Thank you once again for sharing your recent stay experience with us. We look forward to welcoming you on your next visit to Shangri-La’s Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa, Penang.

The Rasa Sayang is truly one of the most lovely properties I've stayed at. We stayed in the higher end Rasa Wing suites and the service was simply stunning. I've never been greeted or said hello to so many times in one day before.

The hotel has the best properly on the Ferringhi beach and the Rasa Wing has its own exclusive pool, dining area and lounge within the property that are "no kids" for those wanting a calmer scene.

The room was stunning and large with all the amenties and comforts. What really stood out though was that each suite came with its own private and shaded outdoor soaking tub. Truly the perfect resort for a romantic get-away.

The restaurant was pricey, as expected of a 5-star properly, but good quality. The seafood buffet on Sat evenings was excellent. But apart from this we ate most meals among the many along the town strip right outside the gate.

Altogether, this was a stunning place to relax in luxury for a few days.
