Shangri-La's Rasa Sayang Resort & Spa
Ranked #1 of 11 Hotels in Batu Ferringhi
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed June 7, 2013

We have stayed here in the Rasa wing many times and the service and quality of our stay this time was as good as it has previously been. If you are considering this hotel it is worth paying the extra upgrade to the Rasa wing- breakfast in the Ferringhi grill, designated pool area with soft drinks, afternoon tea and pre dinner drinks from 17.30-19.00 with buffet snacks in the armada lounge.
The staff are amazingly dedicated to outstanding customer service and this is consistent around the hotel.

No wonder Shangri-la Rasa Sayang is rated no 1 in Penang , from the moment you checkin , you can keep all our worries out the door, the Doorman / Concierge Sadhu and Abdur Rehman will take care of every need be it a booking at Spice Garden , with it's Buy one get one Adult and Children eat free deal on Monday and Tuesdays or inquiring about the best / economical way to travel around Penang , they are there for you. This is my last night here and believe me I don't want to leave .
In Rasa Sayang , the day starts with Chef prepared breakfast , this is not your run of the mill buffet as in all hotels , here you are given a menu to choose from which range from standards like Waffles and PanCakes to Surf and Turf ( consisting of succulent steak and prawn ) and the other day it was fish grilled to perfection. We spend the day in the pool , as they have one exclusively for adults or if you have kids , the Garden Wing also have one for everyone. During the day we also took the kids to Adventure Zone , where they played their heart out , while I can go and tee off in the on property 9 hole golf course or para sail on the beach. As the clock struck 3 pm , it's time for high tea consisting of drinks ( as I don't drink alcohol , they made a killer fruit punch for me ) and amazing cakes and sandwiches ranging from Chicken Liver Pate to Grilled Beef and Salmon , the feast ends at 4 and pre dinner canapés start at 7:30 which is a bit more formal and one need to wear pants and shoes and as they say ' children are discouraged ' but will be treated like royalty if present :) here you can have choices like Seafood Thermdore , Beef Lasagne , Salmon , Sushi and range of cakes this last till 7 pm and then we can head out to enjoy night time Batu Ferringhi and this party is everyday affair.
The rooms , are huge , I took the most inexpensive one but with two adults and two kids it was huge with a large LED TV , free high speed internet access and complementary Tea and Coffee and water bottles ( we were getting 6 a day ) and fruit baskets .
The bathroom has seperate bath tub and shower with L'Occitaine bath amenities
Overall this resort deserves it's top position in Penang and next time I'm in Penang I'm definitely staying here

I was just looking at a website with a link that brought me to this review page. Wow! What memories it brought back! We came to the Rasa Wing in March 2011 - I know, I should have written this long ago! What a fantastic holiday, from the moment we walked in the staff just couldn't do enough for us, we were ushered to their lounge, given cold towels and refreshing drinks with a genuine warmth that you don't see too often.

We loved the relaxed quiet around the pool which is for people 16 years and over - we love kids but this is a lovely idea when you just want an R'R holiday with your partner. There is another huge and amazing pool on the other size of the resort that suits the younger ones. It starts off as a beach-like area where you can sit your babies and toddlers in the lapping water, then it meanders around to deeper sections for the little ones and then finishes deeper again further around for the older ones. Another thing I loved about that area was that it's shaded by the most beautiful trees and palms throughout which means you don't have to worry so much about sunburn.

The restaurants were excellent, the staff everywhere were brilliant and our room was very nice. The high tea at 4pm was amazing but as we were there to relax, our favourite part was happy hour (plonky's you say! Heck it was a holiday!). We would be ushered into the lounge by a mature aged gentleman with the most beautiful, infectious smile and I'm ashamed to say that after only 2 years I have forgotten his name. There were Chandon's for me and G'n T's for hubby with a plate each of hors d'oeuvre to die for. By day two he knew which seat we liked and what we liked to drink. By day three we would just walk in to see his cheeky smile and asking "Madam - Sparkly?" to which I'd reply "Of course" and that was the norm for the rest of the trip.

The General Manager would walk around meeting and speaking to all his guests and we even had a visit from their new Australian chef who kindly took me on a tour of his kitchen.

Hopefully for anyone thinking of going there nothing has changed in these last two years and I think it might be time to consider another visit.

Note: I did't really travel in July 2012 but had to select it as there were no earlier choices.

To start off I cannot recommend highly enough the Rasa wing. If you are a couple of have children that are older than 16, then this wing will be the way to go. A pool specifically for Rasa residents with free soft drinks through the day, then afternoon tea, aswell as cocktail hour in the evening with canapes.
The Rasa wing gets you breakfast in their ferringhi grill restaurant which is a la carte breakfast which was very nice
The rooms are great as well, we were fortunate enough to get an upgrade to a "Premier" room, which was amazing - with tub in the balcony overlooking the gardens and the sea after that. The service was very good, everyone eager to make our holiday great.
The beach isnt as great, as it is a bit grainy to walk on, and there are signs everywhere to beware the jellyfish - so we didnt really venture in, which was a shame.
I cannot recommend this hotel highly enough - you will not be disappointed if you stay in the RASA wing. It is worth it if you consider the extras that you get with it

We stayed at the Shangri-la Rasa Hotel in the Garden wing with Club access status. We arrived after 19 hours of flying from Toronto and were greeted with a cold nutmeg juice drink and scented wet, washcloth before checking into the resort. We felt like rock stars! Everyone knew our name and we were impressed by all the hotel staff from the room cleaners, door men to the manager. Not one attention to detail was overlooked. The buffet breakfast was outstanding; afternoon tea looked a little better than it tasted so we chose to stay at the pool; evening cocktails and appetizers were sensational and this time provided all the guest the opportunity to relax with a drink before heading out for supper or the chance to mingle and get to know one another. The food was great! The accomodations were clean, spacious and staff got anything we needed to help us. Again, this was our best resort experience ever from Noth American, the UK to the Carribbean! One day, we hope to come back again with our children! We were disappointed that we could not swim in the ocean but we were told the jellyfish would sting. Staff apologized profusely but the salt water pools were clean and well staffed and maintained. If you have a long flight, ask for Jackie or Mary to give you a foot massage. Our only regreat is that we cannot get this kind of reflexology and massage in our town back home.

top rate service, you could grab any service staff walking along the corridor and he would answer your queries with a smile. We were with our young son and the bell boys are only too happy and obliging to jump into the buggy and ferry us to and from the two hotels Rasa Sayang and Golden Sands. the hotel cannot be beaten for the location as i have stayed in other 5 star hotels before but getting cheap and good food would be the killer, at Rasa Sayang Penang groceries and eateries are just across the road or down the street at Long Beach. So families with young children need not worry about food. One of the bell boys even recommended Mario's to us, and we were not disappointed. they have woodfire pizza. the most amazing thing about this hotel is that even the open air area of the breakfast buffet was NON-SMOKING which is why this hotel will be one of my favourites as i have spent many holidays in other parts of Malaysia trying to avoid breathing cigarette smoke from other guests. Check in desk Veronica wanted to upgrade us to the Rasa Wing but that would mean doing without the view, so we declined and she gave us a really great family room at the Garden wing with stupendous views over the pool and sea.

Room Tip: for those with families, they have a room with king bed and an actual bed (not a rollaway extra bed...

We stayed in the Garden Wing and were not disappointed. The buffet breakfast was brilliant & we used this as our main meal of the day, only topping up with snacks and a light evening meal. There is every type of food available so you cannot complain of being bored. Curry, malay, european, full english, pancakes and many things cooked freshly to order while you wait. Room service was delicious and reasonably priced. We also walked down to the local street markets in the evenings.

There were plenty of sunbeds available at all times and despite only being allowed at the family pool we were not bothered by noise from children playing. Being there so close to Christmas the pool did get busier over the weekend, but as we were only dipping in and out to cool down it really didn't matter that there were children playing.

The staff were always helpful and attentive and even went through the rubbish after we had vacated our room and located a wallet full of currency that had been inadvertently thrown out by me (baby brain!). We were taking the public bus to the airport, so they used a golf buggy to drop our suitcases (and would have dropped us too if we had wanted) to the bus stop down the road.

All the little touches were just super & made the stay really enjoyable. Highly recommended!
