“Kids friendly, good value”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 2, 2014

Stayed here for 3 nights before moving to Georgetown. Checkin/checkout at the cool lounge was slightly long but comfotable. We booked 3 hillview rooms, got 2 connecting ones and 1 about 5 rooms away on the same floor. Being on the 4th floor, the "hillview" was actually tree/ city views which was nice during the day, but can be noisy at night (traffic from main intersection) and early morning (prayer time from nearby mosque). Both the main room and bathroom were of decent size, and the bed/ pillows were comfortable.

Breakfast (included in room charge) was a massive buffet at the main cafe, where it could be chaotic at times as others have mentioned. We realised they also served breakfast at the beach side restaurant, so we went there for the next two mornings. It was a sightly smaller buffet spread but had a much more relaxing and pleasant environment. The food quality was ok in general. For lunch/ dinner we tried the a la carte menu from the main cafe, pool side cafe and room service. The prices were high compared to local restaurants nearby, but still resonable value in terms of quality and presentation (the Malaysian items are better than the western/ middle eastern ones).

The hotel is located on the main road where you can walk easily to the night market stalls and local restaurants. Taxis are available from the hotel front but it can take awhile during busy periods. We used the free shuttle to Gergetown once - advise to prebook in advance especially for a larger group.

There was plenty to do at the resort itself. We tried their free tai chi class in the morning, walke/ played at the beach (sunset was beautiful), took our kid to the playroom at the kids club, swam at the pools and relaxed at the cool zone/ library. The friendly and courteous staff made our stay even more enjoyable.

Room Tip: Avoid the rooms facing main street (aka the "hill view" rooms) if you are a light sleeper.

Dear Iris L,

Thank you for sharing your valuable comments with us.

We regret to hear that your check in and check out experience was slightly delay and the inconveniences you have experienced in our hillview room.

Our seafacing rooms would be a better category as they have a pristine view of the sea. I have put this in record in your Guest Profile to remind us about the seafacing in your future visit to Golden Sands Resort.

We have taken note of your comments with regards to the peak breakfast hours. Please rest assured that we will address this issue with Food and Beverage Department for further improvement.

Thank you once again for taking time to review our resort. We look forward to welcoming you back in the near future.

My family and I stayed here 4 nights in the family fun package. We were happy with the resort and the package provided. It was a good value but could be improved.

Room. Hill view king bed
Good size and clean, bathroom was dated. Noise was not too bad but could be heard from hallway, and road.
Kids club. Great for rainy days but can get crowded In a hurry. Lunch was provided for kids but menu only had 5 choice's and did not include a drink.
Hotel facilities are good no problems.

Hotel food mainly the buffet dinner and breakfast that were included are good. I was tired of it after a few days. Food was good but not great. Beware on Thursday nights the buffet has changed to international buffet. It felt as though half of the food was leftover from the night before. Specifically the salads and roast lamb/chicken as there was limited amount available.

Overall 8/10

Stayed with family for the week which dragged into the labour day (May 1st) holidays. Not surprised to see a lot of people coming into the hotel but surprised to see a lot of non-staying families occupying the pool. How do I know? Because they brought with them their own towels. I thought to myself, maybe it's like Hard Rock where they paid a sum to use the pool but I don't see any wrist tags. Then a group was smoking heavily and talking so loudly, just spoilt the whole image of a 5 star hotel. So that's one. The other thing was, the freshly squeezed orange juice which costs Rm18 (incld tax) did not taste like orange at all. So a rip off. Otherwise a so-so hotel. Food is ok. Try the pizzas, nice and hot. Won't return, would prefer park royal.

Dear Janice C,

Thank you for staying with us with your family and your candid review of our resort. I am distressed, however to hear about your observation of non in-house guests using our pool facilities.

We taking your comment seriously as the swimming pools is strictly for in-house registered guests.

I have informed our Recreation and Security team to be more vigilant during their rounds and to ensure that no outsiders are allowed to use the swimming pools. We thank you for bringing this matter to our attention.

I have also shared your comment on the quality of the orange juice with our Director of Food and Beverage. I would very much appreciate it if you could kindly contact me at communications, rsr@shangri-la.com so that I can refund RM18 including taxes back to you.

We do hope that you will accord us another opportunity to be of service to you again.

Thank you,

This hotel still stands to be a lovely place to visit. We have been staying at Parkroyal but have found the standards have dropped. We would definitely come back here again. We only went hillview room this time and it was great. Nice sized room and very clean. We didn't have any trouble with noise. The breakfast is amazing here if you can not find something you like then you are extremely fussy!! The outdoor area is beautiful and something for everyone. The kids pool is great under cover and the kids all love the slide. Only downfall is parents can not go down with them!! Our little one loved adventure zone and would recommend taking your kids there during a stay. We played golf here and the staff member was so nice, even got little golf club for our toddler. We found the staff really nice especially in the kids club always remembered our boys name. Its location is great easy walking distance to everything. Can not wait for our next trip back here.

Room Tip: We usually go seaview room but if you can not afford this hillview rooms were still lovely. Request...

My family and I have been here twice previously, so recently on a trip with just my sister and,I we booked to stay in the town rather than by the beach. After the first extremely dull and disappointing night in a town 5 start hotel (booked for 5 nights), we packed our bags and booked golden sand! Hands down the best place to stay. The same staff from 4 years ago remembered us by name! Fresh juice with a flower was served on check in. The rooms had been renovated and interior was breathtaking.
Highly recommended! A must see in penang!

Room Tip: We walked into a room that smelt like cigarette smoked had passed through so they promptly moved us...

Wasn’t sure where to go for the annual vacation. Could not decide between Langkawi or Pangkor, or Penang. In the end, decided to go for Penang Island. We wanted a nice beach hotel, so the obvious choice was Feringgi beach. One of the more renowned hotels in Feringgi would be Golden Sands Resort. So we went for it. Once we reached the hotel, we knew we made the right choice. The hotel looked really nice, was clean, spacious and well designed. Very peaceful too. Checking in was smooth, and although we arrived before the check in time, we were allowed into our room much earlier.

Here are some of the other noteworthy points of our stay:

The swimming pool area is really awesome! Probably one of the best we have encountered so far. Kids will definitely enjoy this. Then there’s the private beach area just a few steps away from poolside. The beach looked reasonably clean, and the sand, well...sandy. There are various water sports and activities for the adventurous persons to try out. They looked fun but we did not try though.

The location of the hotel was great. Just across the road are the usual fast food outlets (McD and KFC). Then a stroll to the left of the hotel would lead you to many food courts where you can sample the local delicacies. (Note: Much cheaper than hotel food!). Then at nights you will get to check out the “pasar malam” or night market. Lots of shopping (and bargaining) to be done there.

Travelling is a breeze as there is also a taxi stand across the road, and a bus stop just outside the hotel. If you don’t mind taking the bus, you can get right into Penang town for less than RM2.

Overall we really enjoyed our stay at the Golden Sands. It was really nice for a quick and relaxing getaway. We hope to return one day.

Room Tip: If you choose hillview, pick the higher floors. Likely to be quieter.

We travelled back to the resort where we stayed in 2004. Not too much has changed, and overall it was a good stay.

Check in was fast and courteous, and the luggage delivery efficient. We were just about to go out to get some dinner (arrived in the evening) and they arrived.

We did notice some staff streamlining at breakfast, i.e. no coffee/tea refills by the staff, and there was no explanation of the layout- compared to our previous visit. The staff were friendly and efficient throughout , but appeared to be stretched for time. This seemed the theme of the stay. There were some shortages of food at times, but this can happen - but most of the time the breakfast lived up to expectations. At times the pickup of plates was slow especially when you are tucked away in a corner, or behind a pole.

It did not help when some large corporate groups were at the resorts - causing queues at breakfast. They did cope on the busiest days by setting up breakfast as Sigi's

A big plus was the availability of chilled water throughout the resort, as this is not always the case, even at more up-market resorts.

The grounds were tidy, and neat - and always back to the same state at the beginning of each day. The overall layout of the area allowed for families and those who wished to be away from the noise of family to happily co-exist. This is one area that I can recommend the resort for when not fully booked.

Our group used the golf course (next door) for the putting competition (recommend this for some fun) and a round of golf. The staff at the golf course were friendly and engaging. The CHI spa session was relaxing and up to standard, as a treatment experience. I would also recommend using the people on the beach for a quick and good massage.

We ate at the Café (Bufet dinner) - reasonbale buffet, and Sigi's another night- We enjoyed this meal - I had the sirloin (MedRare - as ordered) steak, and my wife the fillet - again cooked as ordered Med. It has been difficult to get good steak - cooked to order at times while on holiday.

The drinks and food service around the pool, and in the bars was a little slow, especially when the resort was not full. It seemed to take a long time to get drinks - at most bars - The Lobby, Sigi's and also the pool service. I don't expect snappy service around the pool as you are relaxing, but it did take a while (shortage of staff/bar people??)

The room servicing was inconsistent - some items the items requested to be refreshed were not (i.e. sheets), and other times everything was done even if not. Face washers taken & not replaced.. This also happened to the couple we travelled with. It is the little things like this that make for a polished experience, but any items were fixed promptly when chased up. It also became a game to see what was different, although our rooms were next to each other, and serviced by the same people.

Our room showed some signs of tiredness, but the other couple had an updated bathroom with looked better. You have to expect that not all the rooms are at the same standard.

Overall the stay was all you expect of a big resort - close to a very good experiance

Room Tip: Rooms on the hill side are a little larger - but no sea view

Dear Kevinhols,

Thank you for staying at our Golden Sands Resort.

We are pleased that your check-in experience was a pleasant one.
However, we will certainly look into areas of improvement in terms
of our breakfast experience, service and food replenishment. Breakfast time
is usually a busy time at our resort, more so when they are groups and during
high occupancy.

Our Food and Beverage and Housekeeping team has been informed and they
will look into ways of improving the efficiency of our service. Our Maintenance
team will look into the conditions of our rooms.

We are certain that with all these measures in place, your next stay with us will be
a more pleasant one.

On that note, we look forward to your next stay with us.
