“Great for a family vacation.”
Reviewed December 31, 2013 via mobile

The Golden Sands staff are helpful, polite, and very tolerant of small children. The beach itself is a bit disappointing, as it is steep and the sand coarse. But the hotel is relaxing and well maintained. The food is on the good side of average, but perfectly suits the needs of a family looking for a short get-away.

Great hotel with heaps of entertainment for kids. Very affordable food inside hotel and super cheap outside as hawker markets right outside the door.
Fantastic breakfast included. There is also a free shuttle between the hotel and traders in Georgetown.

Shangri La always delivers and lives up to expectations. This hotel has a lovely pool area with several pools. The rooms are spacious and well supplied with clean linen and lovely bath products. The staff are very helpful and professional. We went in peak holiday season so was very busy everywhere.. in the lobby, at breakfast, in the lift etc.. but was a great place to stay. We had a room right next to a mosque.. which means an early wakeup call with loud speaker 'praying'. I would recommend staying as is one of the nicest hotels in Batu Ferringhi at a reasonable price!! Do it!!

Room Tip: Ask for an ocean view room… room 145 next to mosque!

Me and my partner loved it here!! Yes there were kids around but not as many as I expected. We sat far away from the pool where all the couples were sitting and it was nice and relaxing. Yes there are people trying to sell you water sports but just say no and keep moving. Not hard to ignore them. We did parasailing which was awesome!!
I would recommend coming here. Staff were friendly, breakfast was delicious and the pools were great. Especially when they had the pool volleyball on.
Only down side is that drinks are a bit pricey outside happy hour but great cafe/restaurant around the corner.
Overall we had a great time here!

Checked in 13th Dec - 16th Dec 2013. Booked 2 adjoining rooms on level 5 seaview.
View is fantastic, room very modern and well decorated, comfortable and nice.
Staff are friendly and efficient.

Things to improve:
1. Check In
Our check in was problematic due to miscommunication between reservation department and front desk staff. Room was booked thru internet and guaranteed with credit card, however due to flight issues, i arrived later than my whole family and they were forced to leave another cash deposit to check in.

Should have allowed them to check in and relied on the credit card guarantee and call to confirm with me instead.

2. Safe deposit box.
Not work working. Already locked when checking in into the room.

Should be working, and checked by housekeeping to be open when guest check out.

3. Parking.
Due to school holidays, parking is always full, since there is very limited parking in front of the hotel itself. There was insufficient signage(s) to inform where to park, one way street, and exits.
Since the parking area is shared between Rasa Sayang Resort BF, walking back to the hotel can be time consuming and tiring. At night, dangerous, since no security guard(s) manning the exit gate near the shared carpark area. The allocated buggy service is not reliable, as the driver is also concierge?

Should improve road signages within the hotel compounds, station security guard post at the carpark exit gate, equip the guard with a walkie talkie to inform the buggy driver to come pick up.

4. Beach entertainment/activities.
Not sure whether this was under hotel management or not, however it is directly on hotel beach front. Safety is a major issue. Paid for para-sailing for my daughters, and myself. The staff manning the activity was not well trained. Used the same harness for adult or children. The rope connected to the boat was very slacken when they asked us to run down from the beach towards the water to inflate the chute. This can on result in a fall as we almost reach the water's edge, then being dragged across the beach before being airborne. I personally suffered laceration on my leg as a result of being dragged across, bruises on the shoulder and back pains post the activity suspected due to bruising on the back bone. 2 weeks later, the pain is still there. Luckily my daughters whom also fell during the activity before being airborne was not physically injured. The lifejackets were also undersized and very worn.

Should improve training, safety, and equipment for the operators.

Room Tip: Seaview on the higher floors.

Dear MaCo5007,

Thank you for your TripAdvisor review of our resort.

We are concerned to read that your check in exprerience was not a smooth one. We will highlight check in logistics to our Director of Rooms so that training is given to ensure a more seamless check in in future.

Please contact our Front Office should you find your room safe deposit box to be locked or faulty.

Thank you for highlighting our our parking facilities. We will ensure that there are more security personnel to direct traffic and be present for our guests at all times.

Golden Sands Resort is located on a public beach and the beach operators offering water sports are not affiliated with us in any way. We discourage our guests from participating in any of the water sports activities as they are unsafe. Your concerns about the water sports operators will be highlighted to our local council during our next dialogue with them.

Once again, many thanks for your feedback and we certainly look forward to serving you again in the near future.

Kind regards,

always go for the sea facing room, city view to avoided. for sea view rooms go for high floor to have good view as the palm trees will block the view for lower floors.
