“great, especially for families”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 8, 2013

The location of this hotel is perfect; you have the night market literally right outside your gate, and all the best restaurants that we found were just one block to the left. There is also a set of traffic lights right outside which is handy when trying to cross the road with little kids, though the road isnt that busy.
The rooms are fantastic, clean and well furnished with extremely comfortable beds. We had two adjoining rooms that were great size. The pools are very big and there is various types of pools for everyone. We had no trouble getting a lounge and some had tables with them.

The beach isnt a swimming beach, instead it is pretty shelly, and there is water sports going on everywhere. The people selling these watersports are just locals, and you can bargain with them. we met one guy and made him a deal to give him all our business for a cheaper price. almost every type of watersport you can imagine is available.

breakfast is very good and lots of options.

there was also a lot of activities in the hotel, like volleyball in the pool and we were treated to a snake show which was incredible!

one issue we had was with our room having the speakers for the local mosque right outside our window meaning sometimes you were woken up early in the morning by the noise!

Would definantly stay again if i were to go to penang.

we stayed at the golden sands for our summer holidays and frankly my husband and i have to admit it's only on average. besides the pool (though the poolside staff never smiled), adventure zone and spa@rasa sayang are worth the top, there were just some things which have made our stay less enjoyable.

ROOM. we checked in late and we were given a room on the first floor (although we had booked a sea-facing room) - okay, maybe you'd say okay, the room is still facing the sea BUT given the room is situated too low (1st floor), there's not much sea view, but rather, pool view. on the second day after we woke up, my husband told me already there were ants in the room, ants in the bathroom, ants on the writing desk (when he was working with his laptop), ants just everywhere. i know there are flowerbeds outside our balcony to make the hotel nicer, but we are sure there are also measures to keep the ants away from the rooms. pillows are okay, 2 pieces are a bit too high and 1 just too low for us. i thought there would be a pillow menu for the guests, but i couldn't find it anywhere.... actually do the guests have to ask for a menu for the housekeeping (i am not so sure, but most hotels has put down the menu already when the room is ready for new guests)?

MEALS. there's quite a collection to choose from but i must say, with such a BIG flood of guests in the resort especially because it's the peak of the summer holidays, i'd like to suggest the resort to provide enough eating utensils. forks, spoons, knives, mugs, cups, glasses, bowls, plates. towards the end of our stay we had to hunt for them. staff are busy bringing guests to their tables and to serve them BUT PLEASE ASK when you'd like to take away the utensils. there are a few times when the waiter just took away our knives and spoons and forks thinking we're done but actually NOT YET!!! even several unused toothpicks were taken away. i know you'd like to bring them back to the wash and let other guests use it, but it doesn't hurt to ask the guests first, right???

HOUSEKEEPING. please do not take away anything on the desks/tables. i left several empty plastic bags on the table so that i would reuse and put back lotion-bottles (sunscreen, aftersun etc) for anti-messy accidents in the suitcase, but they were gone when we came back from town. what is worse is, a few days later we went out again to georgetown for an afternoon and when we came back, our room was just being cleaned...what, we have gone for 5 hours and still the room was not ready yet?! i later went to complain to the reception and there was a lady telling me 'the housekeeping was busy making up the rooms that were checked out today so that they would be ready for new guests...' okay, that sounds a reasonable explanation, but 5 hours (we had to wait in the lobby) and still not ready was just way too much and hardly acceptable for a prestigious resort.

bad things enough said. i know everything nor everyone is perfect but as a shangri-la such things can be improved.

Room Tip: don't ask for rooms on the first floor, unless you like ants.

Dear RMWong2013

Thank you for taking time to share the details of your recent stay with us.

We are disappointed to hear that your check-in experience was below your expectations. In future, may we suggest that you speak to our Duty Manager with regards to room issues. Our Duty Manager would be more than happy to provide another room without ants and a proper pillow menu.

We have also read about your comments regarding our pool staff, waiters and housekeeping team. Training will be provided to our staff to ensure that they communicate well with guests so that such an experience will not happen ever again during breakfast, pool time and during room cleaning.

We thank you once again for your candid response to our resort. We hope that with the training in place and the rooms in improved conditions, you will be able to achieve a true Shangri-La experience the next time you visit us.

Again, we do greatly appreciate you taking the time to leave your feedback on our page. I trust we may the pleasure of welcoming you back on your next visit to Penang..

Staying at the Golden Sands was a decision that I was really proud of making. From the moment we reached, we found the place just breath taking and instantly got into the mood for our island holiday after the hustle and bustle of beautiful Kuala Lumpur. The front desk attendants were very helpful and offered us a room with a descendible wall bed for our 10 year old son free of charge. In minutes we were already in our room and our bags right away followed us even though the hotel was fully packed at the time of our stay.

Yes, you will read that the place is a bit old, and it is, but that did not affect the experience of our stay in any way. The rooms are adequately furnished, containing everything that you would need. Housekeeping are attentive and generous responding to all our requests of towels, shampoo and extra water bottles without hesitation.

Moving on to the facilities of the hotel, they are endless! Starting from the lavish breakfast that was included in our room rate and free for our son, the choices are endless with the live cooking stations and foods to satisfy all tastes and cultures. The pool area was beautiful and was constantly covered with the attention of life guards. The beach has endless activities going on from para-sailing, jet-skis, massages, facials, horseback riding; you name it, they have it all.

For people travelling with kids, trust me, this is the place for you. There are endless activities going on in the pool area from aerobics, water-polo and so on and there is a specific adventure-zone dedicated to the entertainment of kids with alternative activities on a daily basis.

Other than roaming through the night market every evening, buying souvenirs and dining in local restaurants that offered meals costing less than RM 10, we did not want to leave the hotel and waste a moment away from it. We surely will be visiting Penang again and would not want to stay in any other place. The Golden Sands is the place!

Room Tip: Rooms on the higher floors gives you a beautiful full view of the pool area and beach.

This place is not really my type of accommodation but I landed there due to a friend's booking. Rooms are nice and clean but the breakfast is average. The pool are is very busy and the beach is filled with non hotel business people trying to entice you to do water sports or a cheaper massage, both of which work out well if you don't want to pay hotel rates. It's okay but maybe the Shangri-La next door is a better choice as it is quite and has nicer beach.

Room Tip: Beach view with Balcony is probably the best opition!

Dear rima D,

Thanks for your review of our resort.

We have taken note of your comments regarding your breakfast experience. The team will work together to ensure that breakfast improves in terms of food quality and variety.

The water sports operators are not affiliated in any manner to the resort. We would advise all our guests to apply discretion when engaging in water sports. Golden Sands Resort tends to be more vibrant in terms of ambience than her sister resort, Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa. With cross-signing facilities, guests from both properties are able to experience the best of both worlds.

We look forward to welcoming you back to our resort again very soon.

Nice seaside hotel with lots of cool stuff and facilities for kids. Great pool and nice restaurant except that the shower tank was disappointing. Toilet needs improvement. Overall it is a great hotel.

Room Tip: Nice facilities for family with kids.

Checking is something that I've never experienced in other hotels. You are greeted with so much warmth. It was fast and efficient. The room is fully equipped with all necessities. It must be highlighted here is the pool is great. Kids will have so much fun with the kids club. But with an extra cost unfortunately. Breakfast was just okay as Park Royal Penang had a much more delicious food and drink. What I love about this place is, it's so close to the famous Batu Ferringhi night market. Join to be the member of Shangri-la, it's worth it. Book the hotel in advance as its always full.

Dear Rafizal B,

Thank you for your feedback.

We are pleased to know that you enjoyed your recent stay with us.

Most of our kid's club activities are free with the exception of t-shirt painting and sand art as these incur material sourced from a third party. We have taken note of your comments regarding your breakfast experience. Our Executive Chef will be working with the team to ensure that the quality and variety of the buffet spread is of Shangri-La standard.

We are pleased to know that you are our Golden Circle member and we look forward to the privilege of welcoming you back to our resort again soon.
