“Excellant hotel dont hesitate to book”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 22, 2013

We stayed here for 5 nights on a trip round Malaysia and i can highly recommend this hotel. After reading some reviews I was a bit worried but there was nothing to be worried about at all.

Rooms

We had a hill facing room , we were offered an upgrade but it was very expensive to do so we declined. The room was spacious clean and the bed was extremely comfotable. There is bath and shower and overall very pleasant.

Food/Bars

Breakfast was lovely and there was loads on offer , we also eat in the hotel during the day and the food was great great choice for all the family. we also walked over to the sister 5 star hotel (next door) and the food was great there too. There is also a good selection of places to drink with a nice view of the sea.

Pools/Beach

There two lovely pools with plenty of sun loungers and shade to relax. The hotel is right on the beach . We didnt spend to much time on the beach as there is many people trying to sell water sports but once you tell them no they move on , there is lovely views from the beach .

Service

This is one of the best things about the resort the staff are amazing and very friendly!!! there was one guy who was training and he provided the best service i cant rate high enough,

Location

Excellant location really near many restaurants and the night market.

It is worth walking to the sister hotel next door guests can use the facilities and the grounds are beautiful.

Overall a wonderful trip, Penang is best known for its food and it was top class!

Room Tip: A hill view is fine bit expensive to upgrade to a sea facing room

We returned last week after spending 7 nights at the Golden Sands Resort. It was our second stay and wont be our last.
We find it hard to understand how some reviewers are just so critical. I mean the place is 25-30 years old so understandably it's not like your luxury Dubai or Singapore six star establishments.
Despite it's vintage the resort is very well maintained, the rooms(hillside)are clean, spacious and
very well serviced.
If guests find it hard coping with a 'shower curtain' then I suggest they lighten up a bit and just get on with enjoying a relaxing holiday or go next door to the Shangri La!!
We found all staff to be most helpful(particularly the Cool Lounge ladies)and at no time did we encounter any rudeness or poor standards of treatment from anybody.
The breakfasts were always delicious with a huge variety of both Asian and Western food.
The complimentary coach into Georgetown is a very well run service and the Traders as a pick up and drop off centre is perfect in terms of it's location. We found ourselves with about 6 shopping bags full and still hadn't finished so went to Traders and they cloaked our bags for us free of charge.
All things being well we will definately be returning to the Golden Sands Resort sooner rather than later.

Room Tip: Totally individual choice, i.e. if you want to have a balcony with some water views go for it,but ra...

April 2013, just returned from a week at the Golden Sands Resort with the family (two 11 year old boys- twins). This was the first stay at the Golden Sands. We had a interconnecting rooms facing the sea. We found the Resort facilities to be fantastic and all first class. Yes, it is not a NEW resort but for a family holiday it is ideal and highly recommended. The pool area and gardens we kept well. It is a tropical climate so it was hot , but that why we came to Malaysia.

The resort is safe for kids - lots of life and security guards watching, - and will get to know your children by name.

They have free WIFI at the resort - so take your Ipad, Iphone and computer - works well.

The food was wonderful, the breakfast buffet was great with many styles of food on offer. The noodle soup bar was awesome with choice of noodles. Try the curry of the day.

There is a ice machine on every floor and the air conditioning is great after a hot day at the pool

The rooms have a DVD player for use - buy DVDs from the night markets for the kids,- this is a great service

Overall the food at the resort was fantastic, we eat at two Buffet Dinners (which we as rule ,never eat at the resorts we always try local). But we found the Buffets to be great value and the food outstanding, especially the Malaysian Buffet on a Thursday Night at Stigis Grill,

The rooms were small but we knew this was the case (no villas). The service staff kept the rooms clean and serviced daily. We had a small problem with a toilet but it was fixed in a matter of urgency with a call from the manager to check on the issue as well

The hotel was very busy and at times we could hear the rooms next door (especially when there was a certain couple that argued), but no real problems.

The Adventure Centre for kids was good, although guests of the resort still had to pay a discounted rate for children to attend. HINT - take a long sleeve top.

Outside the resort there is the famous (not as good as KL) night markets, Also for families - there is all the facilities you will need - Mac Donald's and KFC across the road, two chemists near by, a 7 Eleven (24 hours) near by, and lots of LAUNDRYs ,,(so no need to take lots of clothes). We paid $8 RM for a kilo on Wash/ Dry and fold. The Resort also has a laundry room with washers and dryers - buy tokens from reception

The local Hawker food markets are very good and cheap- open about 6pm - HINT not all stalls open each night as well,

There is a TESCO 10 minute taxi trip ($10 RM) from Resort . TESCO is a large supermarket with a few smaller shops. We brought wine, fruit juice and beer (and snacks) here - cheaper and better range than local mini markets.

There is no mini bar in the rooms at the Golden Sands, so fill the bar fridge up with cheaper items from TESCO or mini markets

Overall- A great Resort for families wanting a family holiday. We have travelled to Phuket (twice) Bali and Fiji (twice) and stayed at similar resorts , The Golden Sands Penang is now our best holiday resort (as a venue - for food, facilities and access to local attractions and shops). It is also good value for money with the Aussie $ being so strong

We will return for a family holiday....this is a a great resort - it is a older hotel so don't expect a new modern 6 star hotel... would I stay here for a romantic couple holiday...maybe be not,- but would stay at the sister resort next door.

Enjoy life with the ones you love.

Room Tip: Get a Sea View Room - view is awesome

I came here every year as a kid, and what I remember the best was the pools. And they didn't disappoint, because with a 2 year old, shaded kids' pools and a kids only slide kept him pretty busy and happy. The adventure zone was great too. The toddler area is free, by the way.

Our room was fine, if noisy from the mosque at dawn and construction upstairs during the day (if you're going to stay in the room during the day). Be warned if you are a light sleeper!

Service was good (see below on the room request detail).

We had a seafood buffet which we were happy with, great selection of crabs and prawns in particular. Breakfast was fine; pool/coffee house otherwise unremarkable but inoffensive. Pretty expensive beer but that's to be expected!

Another thing was, it was very quiet. The hotel was at low occupancy so there weren't really that many people around at meal times or at the pools, so it was lovely.

Would definitely come back with a kid. Otherwise, stay at Lone Pine.

Room Tip: Whoever mentioned middle rooms being cleaned last was right. I made a special request for them to cl...

I was very disappointed with Golden Sands Resort - the pictures look amazing on their website - but it's very tired - the pools were like sauna's and there was no shade - it was unbearable. The rooms had old baths with a shower curtain and our bath was rusted. When I complained that I wasn't happy with the room - they said I could upgrade to a room with a proper shower(separate shower) for an extra $350AUD - the room was identical - only difference was a balcony and a shower. Should of payed the extra and stayed at Rasa Sayong next door - that was absolutely beautiful. Breakfast was a mess - no air-con, overcrowded and queue's everywhere. The only positive about this accom is that it's in a good location and has a free shuttle to the shopping centre - that's it!! - talked to other guests and they felt the same. Shame about the accom - as Penang itself was very nice, clean , wonderful local food.

Room Tip: Stay next door at Rasa Sayong

Dear 384Kathy,

Thank you for staying with us and your review of our property. I am concerned to read about your room and breakfast experience.

I have taken note of your feedback on overall temperature around our pools and the lack of shade during your visit. Penang island was experiencing higher than average temperatures for the months of March and April and there was a general consensus that we were going through an unusually hot spell.

With regards to the condition of our bath and shower curtains, we have briefed our Housekeeping staff to take note of signs of wear and stubborn stains. In addition, we have also reiterated to Housekeeping staff on the importance of ensuring that the bathroom remains spotless, regardless of whether it is peak season or otherwise.

I empathise with you about your breakfast experience. However, please do note that breakfast time is staggered over several hours and therefore, there will be peak hours where more people would go for breakfast. Nevertheless, I have briefed our relevant staff to be extra alert during peak breakfast times so that we can help to reduce waiting time, expedite the clearing of tables and direct guests to available seats.

On a lighter note, we are glad to hear that you found the location of the resort and the complimentary shuttle bus highly convenient. We are also pleased to note that you had an enjoyable time in Penang.

We look forward to welcoming you back.

Yours sincerely,

Suleiman Tunku Abdul Rahman

Stayed here for a week in November 2012 and had a good overall break. It was school and public holidays so was packed most of the time. Despite warnings from previous reviews the breakfast queue was not as bad as we had anticipated and although very busy we never had to wait more than a few minutes and most days they were serving it down at the beach area as well. Rooms were spacious and comfortable and we had a seaview with balcony. The bathrooms do need updating and the shower curtain didn't stop water leaking all over the floor (mentioned in several earlier reviews). The evening buffets were expensive (not just specific to this hotel) but there were plenty of alternatives outside. Overall a good place to stay as long as you don't want total peace and quiet and want to venture out.
