Golden Sands Resort by Shangri-La
Ranked #5 of 10 Hotels in Batu Ferringhi

Stayed for one nite on Xmas eve with family of 4 adults n 4 kids. Booked the hotel quite last minute and comparing to the rate and the activities, i chose Golden Sands instead of Hard Rock. I've stayed in Hard Rock twice before and this is my 1st stay in GSR and looking forward for more. The location is great, walking distance to almost everything, night market, massage parlour, f&b plus all the kids activities. Wish i stayed longer cause the kids really enjoyed the adventure zone (RM20++ for hotel guest with buy 3 free 1 promo) and the pool. We didnt have time to try the other kids activities because of the short stay.

Beach activities also interesting. Tried donut and parasailing with the kids.

The only thing i can complain bout this hotel is the reservation process. I received an email to send all the details n replied accordingly, yet they sent me incorrect details. They should have check my details properly before replying my email. At first they were confused with the arrangement for the number of adults and kids in each room (i've booked 3 seafacing rooms) and then about the smoking/non-smoking room (i've requested 1 smoking and 2 non-smoking) but i was still given non-smoking room for all 3 during check-in. Luckily they changed it to smoking room accordingly. I'll surely rate this hotel as excellent if the reservation and check-in process was smooth. I hope its not going to happen to anyone next time.

I have a good impression on this hotel overall. I sure will coma back again next time! See u again GSR!

Room Tip: If you are booking for seafacing room, pls request for higher floor... smoking floor also ok! The vi...

For me it's the beautiful well looked after gardens. The type that can only exist in old school classic hotels that have been around for along time, places like the Hyatt Sanur. They are established and work very well.

The pools were a big surprise for me, in so much that they were impressive for something of this age. Brilliant for families with kids, something there are a lot of! Being Asia though, you'll only have to jostle for space in the evening, once the sun settles.

The hotel looks like it has been given a refresh not so long ago. It brings it up to date but nothing will really wow you. It's functional standard stuff here. Rooms work, bathrooms were clean but un inspiring. Good balconies though.

It's pricey for what you get. To be honest too expensive. It's probably worth about 40% less than what they ask. You won't be utterly disappointed but if you've travelled through Asia you'll fell ripped off. In good way though...

Restaurant handled the morning buffet madness very well. Food was ok, but really one ventures to Penang for the food outside hotels.

Yeah, it was a fun family break with extended family, that was relaxing and hassle free.

Thank you Golden Sands, you looked after us right from the get go. My husband and I went nov 2012 with our 4 children, one being an infant... The service was amazing, Food amazing, the children loved the pool, and adventure zone, so much to do.. We even had to visit the doctor a few times and they were wonderful. Also we used the babysitting service a couple of times as it was our anniversary, they were lovely... Overall we will definitley be going back...

Room Tip: We were in 270, A bit noisey of a weekend, but otherwise beds were comfy...

We stayed here in the middle of November 2012 and had an absolutely fantastic time.My wife and I went with our family and 2 grandchildren who also enjoyed their stay. After a mix up with our accomodation we were shown to a smokers room which was totally unsuitable, which is hard to believe still is allowed these days. After more calls to the manager a better room was shown to us together with a bottle of wine and an apology letter. You have to remember that a mosque is in the hotel grounds and every morning without fail there is a call to prayer at 5 am.We had room 639 which was just to the right of the mosque on the 6th floor.Try to ask for a high floor with rooms to the far left or right so to avoid any early wake up calls from below. The Golden Sands is getting on in age and while the lobby is very good the rooms and passageways need a revamp. We had a hill view room which was spacious and had a huge lounge to relax on under the window. The bathroom was nice but with shower over bath,it was a bit cramped. As with the Shangri La on Sentosa in Singapore the fridge was of the Pieltier variety:meaning it wasnt your ordinary house type but an electronic style which kept drinks cool and only cool.It didnt have a freezer section so forget buying ice cream to take back to your room. There was a free ice machine near the lifts on our floor which helped tremendously with evening drinks. The breakfast array was amazing, lots of variety with both western and asian foods to try and restocked regularly. We didnt order room service but there was a 24 hr Mc Donalds opposite that was good and the famous Longbeach Eatery was a 5 minute walk to the right of the hotel. There are enough reviews of this fantastic, cheap, clean dining experience so I wont need to review this also. The night markets also are just outside the hotel,as well as more restaurants and massage, pedicure etc shops. There must be about 3 pools in the complex,1 with a slide just for the kids to have fun in,a nice shallow one with a shade sail that became a deep 3 metre pool.Another one where we enjoyed a game of pool volleyball every afternoon, only when guests turned up to play. There was never a shortage of sun loungers here or on the beautiful manicured lawn areas near the beach. We didnt do any of the beach stuff, like jet skis or para sailing as we enjoyed all our time with the grandkids who ran us ragged.Happy hour in the afternoons was a great time as the ladies enjoyed cocktails and us men beers. There were also life guards on duty at every pool so we never felt concerned for the kids enjoying themselves. There is the renowned Adventure Zone next door between us and the Rasa Sayang hotel for the kids to enjoy. The Rasa Sayang is tied to our hotel in that they will bill your room for food/beverages your order there as is the Traders Hotel in Georgetown which is accessible by the free hotel shuttle bus.If you feel you will be charging drinks/food to your room account do take advantage of the bonus credit scheme, whereby the hotel charge your room RM$450.00(approx AUD$142.00) and then when you reach this figure they give you a bonus RM$50.00 credit. We were only told of this promotion half way through our stay or we could easily have taken up the offer twice, what with all the ladies cocktails.

Room Tip: Higher floors will be away from the prayer call from the mosque.

good value for price paid, room is comfy, spacious (with extra bed for kids), great pool/water play areas for kids, night market just at the doorstep, lots of good food places around the place

fantastic spread for breakfast, very thoughtful to provide plenty of kids' plates and cutlery, beach is right beside the pool

kids' club, however, is rather lacking, just glorified baby-sitting service, not much activities for younger kids. Need to pay for "extra" activities like sand art etc, and also need to pay for the indoor playground which is too dangerous for younger children, more for tweens-teens, the slides were so scarily high!!

freeflow welcome drink is a nice touch

the pool with slide is rather deep, not suitable for non-swimming younger kids without floats

bring your own floats or buy from the stall across the road, the hotel shop is exhorbitant

Room Tip: personal preference to get a room near lift for easy access

This was the second time i was staying here, decided to go for a sea view room and as my previous experience the rooms are rather small but tastefully decorated with a touch of elegance... Everything about this hotel is good, from their staff, to their rooms, to their pillows and bed and the food..... I always enjoyed my stay in this hotel.... The best thing is their landscaped gardens by the beach..... Its just magnificent..... Arguably one of the best hotels among this stretch... or even in Penang......

Nice hotel with pro-colonial notes in their service.

For rooms near 107, the chopping noise from what must be a kitchen starts around 8am, unbelievable they would sell this room.

Golden circle special checkin could take longer than regular checkin. Some get escorted to their rooms, some don't.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms near 107. I've no idea where the noise comes from but assume downstairs. Or bring ea...
