Golden Sands Resort by Shangri-La
Ranked #5 of 10 Hotels in Batu Ferringhi
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed October 5, 2012

This is one of my favourite resorts, a classic in Penang. Well located at Batu Ferringhi on a good strectch of beach. This is well suited to a family stay with good sizeools and a good kids pool. Great seafood buufets and BBQ,s at the hotels restuarants. All seaview rooms have a great view of the pool and beach and a grat little balconey to relax on.
There is jet ski hire at the beach and massages and its on the door step of the famous Batu Ferringhi night markets. The breakfast buffet is world class. Happy hour at pool bar a must.
We have stayed at this resort 4 times over the last 10 years and whilst a bit over shadowed by its sister resort next door and a bit tired its still a great all rounder. This was highlighted by my recent stay in Penang at another resort on the stretch which emphasised to me even more if somethings not broken dont change it. (i wont name the other resort) .

Great value for money. nice friendly warm staff.

Our room 152 was very handy to the pools and restaurants etc. but unfortunately we were not able to have a sea view although we had requested this. Nevertheless, our room was most comfortable. The staff were always friendly and co-operative. The breakfast variety was huge, so much fresh fruit, eggs, cakes, anything that you could want and more! I enjoyed the cooking demonstrations on two occasions, the chefs were happy to share their local knowledge.
We chose to eat our evening meal at local cafes to mix with the local population and found this very good. We had local reflexology and massages etc. due to the prices at the hotel being a little high. The free shuttle bus to George Town was appreciated by many people wanting to see this area.

Room Tip: If you request a sea facing room, make sure you are given one, we were asked to pay quite a bit more...

We have just returned from our 3rd stay at Golden Sands. We stayed for only 8 nights this time and I wished it was longer.
From the time we checked in at 8am we were whisked away to VIP area for return guests and Golden Circle members and given a drink. WE were able to check in at that time so that was wonderful. Our 2 year old daughter loved it, she spent all her time in the pool from 9 til 5 everyday. We have not been back since the renovations and they are great. The murphy bed idea in the wall cupboard is so great as it gives you space to walk around in the room. Over the 3 trios we have met so many people who return every year some on their 40th trip at Golden Sands. The service is great. We had a problem with keypad on our safe and it was fixed in ten minutes. Our shower curtain rail fell into the bath when housekeeping was cleaning and it was fixed in ten minutes. The service is a amazing. By far out of the place in the world i have travelled Europe ,USA, ASIA etc the Buffet Bfast is great caters for nationalities. FAir enough no pork bacon but u r in a muslim country so you respect that. The free bus to town is awesome and there is lots to do if its a wet day. We find it value for money, we eat at Long beach most nights but some nights the hotel but on Beach BBQ in SIGIS or Garden cafe and they are great value cause kids eat free and happy hour prices continue til 10pm. Look there must be something great about it as people keep returning. We have not been for 4 years an the staff remember us, from pool staff to checkin staff to the guys who hand out the towels. Its great and we will be returning in 2014 for sure....

Room Tip: You need to book a deluxe seafacing room as a balcony is a must. NAd the hill view although bigger h...

First, we had a wonderful time in Penang so no issues there. This is the 3rd Shangri-la we stayed at over the past year. The Golden Sands is the most casual and less active service. We needed to essentially ask for it and be a little pushy to get it. We went during the Chinese Natiomal Holiday week which is a busy week and quite frankly I think is the issue as they are staffed for normal weeks though this was a very busy week. For example, we ate at Sigi's Restaurant and waited 20 minutes for our drinks at dinner time and our room was cleaned most days at dinner time (too late for our requirements). I mentioned this and it improved so requests are taken seriously but I am used to the Shangri-la being pro-active on service, not having to ask for it. I would say we did not get what we expected for the money so the value for money is where I think they lose points on this trip/stay. Hotel condition is great - well maintained and up to date. Tips whe staying:
1) Go to the food court to the west of the hotel (about 100 meters or so). It is large and at first might seem unclean, etc. Food was wonderful and great value. Stay away from Viva Italia! Hard Rock Cafe is close and the typical experience they offer.
2) Kid's Adventure Zone is great. Get the passport - it is a good deal especially for
a family with 2 kids.
3) Lots of good shopping for localits and the fake goods. Decent prices but you will
need to negotiate a bit.

Overall a good experience for my family with 2 kids but a let down on the service.

We have just returned from a seven day stay at the Golden Sands. We had a hill facing room on the 7th floor (715) away from the mosque. We were very fortunate to be able to check in at 11.30am after our early flight and had time to catch up on some sleep. Our room was lovely and I enjoyed the view of the hill and trees from the big couch under the window. We enjoyed a few drinks during happy hour - I can recommend the FBI and the Pina colada - coconut milk rather than malibu. Breakfast was a huge spread, plenty of choice. We also ate in the restaurant for "Hawker night" as a comparison to eating at Long Beach. Use the money changer opposite Long Beach - much better rates than the hotel. We used the computers in the Cool Lounge to do our online check in and were able to print out the boarding passes - no charge. Free wifi is available throughout the hotel.

i am a big fan of shang ri la hotels however i know not to expect as much from 'beach' high end hotels as they are always different.

the hotel was lovely the pool and beach access was great. the room service was resonable and nice.

the staff are lovely.

the one thing i enjoyed the most is the fact that yes it is a resort but its not i nthe middle of nowehere, you can pop out onto the street and eat out, shop out etc but then have the luxury to returnto your secluded hotel. its great
