Almost the exact same words I'd give on their survey form:
"-Wardrobe doors were damaged.
-Underside of bed linen turned black with moist. (how long does it take for fabric to turn black?)
-Hanger knob behind bathroom door is loose and not usable.
-Additional order to my inroom dinner was missed out entirely.
I'm usually not this picky and forgiving. But having paid this price and the reputation coming with the brand,I felt stupid to have paid this much to stay.
The only saving grace is the constant smile on the staff."
The concierge was obviously understaffed on a Sunday afternoon. Knowing that it was going to be a Sunday, during a long weekend holiday that coincided with school holiday week,I was left standing there with trolleys of unguarded luggage for a good 5-10 minutes watching the frantic concierge boys (2) trying to command traffic and calm tourists. This only shows one thing - the management is made up of highly paid idiots who never come in to work on Sundays.
The floor in the lift is constantly wet from pool-goers. The same puddle was there from the moment I left to stroll down the night market - dine at a nearby restaurant - got a foot massage - walk back, and it's still there. This only shows one thing - the lift has some very serious ventilation problem. The lift is shield with full glass panels. Even if the housekeeping was so lazy and thought the puddles would be vapourised by the Sun shining through, why didn't they?!
BUT the hotel was not all bad and no good.
The activities at the pool was excellent, though we did not take part but we had some viewing from our balcony and it was fascinating for kids. Family with young kids would love the programs.
I am really surprised by the thoughtfulness during check-in when a pair of thirst-quenching OJ was quickly presented to us at the counter while another staff process our booking. When I "reminded" for a smoking room,I was quickly reassured with a smile and "it's been taken care of Sir." One of the handful I had received in Asia.
When our room was found not ready, we were directed to the Starz Diner for a complimentary quick bite while we wait. Not so much of the freebies, but someone definitely had empathize the hunger and tiredness in arriving guests. Very well done.
The barmen at The Shack (pool bar) were really friendly and appropriately chatty. They know when to talk to you and when to walk away, which I was very much impressed. That is professional PR skills, which certainly not what I would expect to see at a pool bar named "The Shack" with an arrow through the heart...
On the footnote, although there is a local minimart just across the road and opposite the hotel, there is zilt activity within 500-700m radius. Shops around have mainly went kaput. The night market extends from Park Royal onwards. FYI.
Beach: Just at the entrance to it from the hotel, you would be warmly welcomed by the "touter" even before you could set foot on the sands. As you wave, they could recite to you an extensive list of services they could offer, from horseback riding to a back rub.
Hotel Food: Legendary 10oz burger - Overcooked. Char Kway Teow - Tasted more beansprouts than noodles and tasteless. Mee Goreng and American Breakfast - Good and Passable. Continental Breakfast - breads were cold.
Spa: We were quoted RM170 for the "Rock Massage" or likewise. A 60mins thing. But was told "Sir,it will be done outdoor with no privacy. We can arrange indoor with more privacy for RM50 more". I thank her and went out for a foot massage. I paid RM25, 60 mins.
Shower: EVERY morning I had to play the game of "Who Is Faster Than The Showerhead?" with the bathroom, avoiding the cold water pouring onto my head while reaching out to the knob in the claustrophobic shower room. Whoever designed it should be hung.
Taxis: A short trip within Batu Ferringhi is RM10 (occasionally quoted RM12-15). To the city is between RM30-40. It almost impossible to get a cab at nightfall even with money. It's slaughtering time. Twitch a bit and you'd asked to "you might as well walk Sir" at Holiday Inn, and "Sir, no cab will come into the hotel driveway. It's better you walk" at Park Royal. Yes,I bear grudges.
I would like to share a joke with you. When we ordered the "Legendary" 10oz Burger, we thought it was a typo error when it read "One onion ring". When the burger arrived and we search for the onion rings, we found "one onion ring" in the burger. It, could be the legendary factor.
