The worse part of the entire stay was the check-in experience that took whole one hour and a cold shoulder treatment from the female front desk staff. We did not check-in early but arrived at 2 pm and were made to wait until 3 pm. I would not come again, even though the rooms were well appointed, because to me first impression is the last impression.
I still cannot understad, how a 5 star hotel can make their guests wait for a whole one hour after designated check-in time!

Dear CameronFan,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review of your stay at Hard Rock Hotel Penang.

I am very sorry to read of your check-in experience, which is certainly below the expected standards of Hard Rock Hotel Penang. The hotel does its utmost to ensure the rooms are prepared as quickly as possible. I should note that we do not generally advertise as a 5 star property, although this is our general guests perception when staying here based on the visual aspect and the service from our team.

Once again, thank you for writing a review of your stay. Such feedback helps us improve our services to ensure that our guests all have a rocking good time.

Kind Regards,
John Primmer
General Manager

The location is great. 5 - 10 min walk to Long Beach hawker market (or a quick bus ride) It's more quiet at this end of the beach.
We went to Penang for a relaxing time on the beach after a hectic week in Hong Kong
At Hard Rock, we hired a cabana for each of the days we were there - this was great! No worries about sunburn, a cupboard to store cameras, phones etc and pick up the phone to order food & drinks
Most of the activities were held in the other half of the pool so we could relax & destress
Only criticism is that the breakfast area is congested - needs to be spread out more with stations in different areas

The only person in the hotel who will actually help you with anything will be Ms Magdalene Koay, the Online Sales Manager, who faithfully and promptly answered all my emails before, during and after our stay. I never got to meet her and thank her in person, but she will be the only person in the entire hotel who has product knowledge, is prompt, courteous and has any inkling of what it means to be in the service industry.

The facility used to be called the Casuarina Hotel. The property has had a cursory facelift, a fine patina that will rub off after a few hours as a guest, revealing the tired, stodgy, 1980s hotel that this really is.

The front counter staff have a very limited attention span when it comes to your needs as a guest, details such as confirming the reservation of an extra roll-out bed and if this includes breakfast will be blithely ignored with a vague smile and a nod and a look over your shoulder at the next guest in line at check in.

Children are invisible to the staff, so please don't plan on bringing kids here. We traveled with kids later on this very same trip to the Four Seasons on Langkawi (see review) and the reception they got just made the shabby treatment at the Hard Rock Hotel, Penang all the more evident. We checked in at 3pm and into our room to find the requested roll-away bed no where in sight. We called and were assured that it would be sent up right away. The roll-away finally arrived at 10pm after I got the night manager on the line explaining that it was past bedtime for the kids and I would like to put them to bed. Other than the pool, the Hotel is not what could reasonably be described as "kid-friendly". The Lil Rocker's Club was as deserted, dark and uninviting.

The beach is crowded and noisy and not particularly safe; the water sports center is managed by third party contractors whose idea of safety is to watch from a safe distance whilst guests unwary enough to try parasailing are dragged through the sand before being airborne. My kids were almost clotheslined by the tow ropes from parasails and other towed atrocities while they played in the sand!

Visit Penang for the town, the street food and the Peranakan cultural experience. If it's a beach, nature and tranquility you want, Langkawi is a short 20 minute flight away. Staying at Ferringhi is neither tranquil nor convenient.

Here endeth the rant...I hope you read this and our mistake helps make your trip just that much more pleasant.

Stayed 2 nights with the family at the hotel. Easy to get there from the airport via air conditioned bus. A bit slow but comfortable and cost effective.
Location wise, towards the end of Batu Ferringhi but at the start of the night market....hence quite convenient start point to explore Batu Ferringhi from.
Nice facilties especially the pool which has slides which the kids loved. It also has a kids playroom which is convenient for parents when they take off for a massage at the spa...which isnt too fancy but has decent therapists. Restaurants are decent and food's not bad - would be better with a wider Asian selection though. Overall - nice sea fronting option to sight see Ferringhi from.

My husband stayed here a yr ago for leisure. The hotel was very new then. Besides a poor team at front desk, the rest of it were cool. Therefore when i knew my husband was offered a business trip here i was delighted....

The check in was cool. Unfortunately as we got into our room, i found that there were stain on the table in the bathroom (room 507). that totally put me off! The shower holder was a bit shakey n toiletries smells too artificial...(too fruity, not to my liking). However the bed was really cool, along w the good variety of complimentary items (i esp appreciate the milo drink which is not available in most hotels). The TV and the remote control was a bit cuckoo as well....

However the biggest let down was the food at Starz Diner. I had very fond memory of the char kuey teow there a year ago....unfortunately, the food quality dropped like ten notches.... buffet breakfast not only lacked variety but the taste was horrible! as what my husband mentioned, 5 star hotel w a 3 star brekkie...
