I was suprised when I arrived in Batu Ferringhi - Baba's was so close to the beach and well located. The building at first appeared old and worn however when shown to my room I was happy. The room was large and bed very comfortable. Baba's wi-fi worked well in my room. There were quite a few guests staying on my visit and the other guests were friendly. The price was reasonable as well as normally you would pay a premium for such a great location. In the mornings I went across to the beack, swam and returned and showered at Baba's. The showers and toilets are in the same room and very small and old. If you don't mind some inconveniences and you are looking for a cheap stay this is the place for you. I'd recomment staying just a few nights. the owners are friendly there is a big family and they always seem to go out od their way to help you.

The Baba Guesthouse is, as another reviewer as already reported, ridiculously cheap and in a stunning location mid-point along the beach at Batu Ferringhi. I have never been so pleased with a budget guesthouse. Although not on the beach, only a narrow lane and a line of bars and cafes stand between you and the sand. The bars immediately opposite offer reasonable prices for food and drink, although we'd recommend the 15 minute walk east to the Long Beach Café, which is a lively Malay night market with dozens of kitchens around a covered dining area, for cheap and diverse food.

Penang itself divides opinion. With it's own airport, hundreds of thousands of tourists and expats descend on the island every year. As a result the fringes of George Town and other settlements (including to some extent, Batu Ferringhi) are being swamped with awful modern condominiums, apartment blocks and hotels. And while BF has a number of big resort hotels, there is a small slice of what still feels like the old town, and in the middle of it is Baba Guesthouse.

The accommodation is spartan, with shared bathroom facilities and amusing notices to guests scrawled in marker pen on the walls. But the showers were fine, everything was clean and the beds were comfy. We had been in Malaysia for some time, and were acclimatised to the heat, so were fine without air-con, however new arrivals may appreciate paying the extra. Likewise, we had been based for several weeks prior to our visit next to a mosque in Kuala Lumpur. Not every guest appreciates the 6am call to prayer which is broadcast from the building less than 100m near the hotel. All I can advise is that if you choose to visit a country with a predominant Muslim population, you have no sense to complain about this modest intrusion to your holiday.

Unbeatable for the price. We'll be back.

We stayed at this guest house for the sole reason that it was the only place available in Batu Ferringi at the time. The family that runs it is lovely, but the walls are taped together, and yes there are scribblings with permanent marker, but neither of these aspects bothered me so much. It you are staying with at a 'cheap' guesthouse then you should expect flaws in the room - but the value of this room is probably more like 4-5 dollars a night! not $30!!!

We also asked whether we could do our washing there, and he happily obliged, and then the made went off at us in Malay even though we had permission. she was very unfriendly.

I would not reccommend this hotel because it is exceptionally expensive for what you recieve in return. A boiling hot room with no air conditioner for $30 AUD dollars.

We stayed here for about a week. We didnt pay for the air con room but if we went again we probably would. couldn't ask for better in terms of location. 10 seconds from the beach and baba lends out beach mats if you dont have your own. there's no curfew but they lock the door to keep starngers out so you always feel quite secure. it was too hot to be in your room during the day without air con so if you like relaxing in your room by day - get air con!! would probably stay here again. we umped into baba and his family on holiday in thailand and they remembered us, nice personal touch! thanks baba for a nice stay :-)

We stayed here for 2 nigths on our round the world trip, we were travelling on a budget so we didnt expect much, but this place really is a dump. The walls are very thin, guest notes are written on the walls with marker pens. The showers are in the toilet cubicals so you have to try not to touch the urinals when showering. The toilets are always soaked as the showers are in there as is the toilet roll. This is a really unhygienic place to stay. No power sockets in rooms. Every morning at 5am, the local mosque has a service with loud singing and chanting over a PA system. We couldnt wait to leave.
