Ok , it's not the Kruga, but if you want to see a good variety of game, including the Big 5, within a three hour drive from Cape Town, Sanbona is a good choice. We spent two days at the excellent White Lion Lodge, located in the Southern part of the Reserve. On the game drives with Isreal, our knowledgable ranger, we saw the white lions sleeping of their eland kill, elephants, buffalo, rhinos, giraffes, the rare mountain zebra, antelopes galore, the endangered riverine rabbit, jackals, even a tiny mouse. The bird life in the Reserve is terrific also. The sight of a cheetah family feasting on their Springboch kill, within 6 feet of our vehicle was memorable. If you are remotely interested in animals, birds or geology, go visit Sanbona. You won't be disappointed.

Many people, especially tourists think that the best National Parks are far from and outside Cape Town. We have been to most Game Reserves in South Africa and although there are many animals, game viewing is never guaranteed. If you are wanting to stay closer to Cape Town, here is a private game reserve that doesn't get enough attention but is on our top 10 game reserves.

This is supposed to be a 5 Star, but I do not think so. This accommodation is like all 5 star lodges. They all look the same. The food was not a wow factor. The service not good. Sunday morning breakfast 7-8am way too early for me. We had to rush for the game drive. There were no coffee or tea on buffet table. I asked for fruit that I did not receive. I had to go to kitchen to ask for coffee after long wait. There were only 2 people to serve 9 people from 7-8...not good!! When we came back from game drive after 3 hours there were nothing to drink or snack. The closest cafe or restaurant was 1 hour away. Luckily we had a very knowledgable good game ranger. This reserve is VERY big and your game drives are long and far from this Lodge. Your chances to see a kill are very small. The lodges up North in South Africa are much better for game viewing.

We stayed in one of the Dwyka tents half way through our honeymoon. From the outset all of the staff treated us like royalty, the dining was excellent with a variety of dishes to choose from on the menu daily. The 5 star tents really were worth paying that bit extra for, with the insides being open plan, indoor and outdoor shower etc set against the stunning natural backdrop. The game drives were excellent also, and we were lucky to see all the big game which were there - it is very difficult to say which was the highlight; spending half an hour moving along parallel to elephants as they ate and crunched their way along, or the edge of being only about 10 meters away from the white lions! If you decide to go during the SA winter as we did then make sure and wrap up warm, cold but very exhilarating !!
Excellent time and big a big thank you to all the staff for making this an experience to remember!!
