“Wild, authentic and good value”

The Lodge is about 45 minutes from Montagu along a mostly gravel road which is in pretty good condition. You pass through some beautiful Klein Karoo mountain scenery and interesting vegetation to get there, and the Lodge itself is set in a very peaceful valley. There is a restaurant/bar and swimming pool for guests use and the accommodation is in pretty thatched eco-cottages and a tent on decking overlooking a dam. Len and Mandy are wonderful hosts and their commitment to conservation shines through everything they are doing. No big five squashed into compounds here and no big five prices - instead tranquility, solitude (except when the ostrich tries to eat lunch with you!) and a host of animals in an appropriate environment.

We had a wonderful time. The cottage was stunning, food was great and Len and Mandy were amazing hosts. The kids loved seeing the cheetahs being fed and all the fun tame animals wondering around. Next time we will try the tented camp, very secluded.

A recent geological trip took us to an area of the 'Klein Karoo' - a four night stay in the chalets at African Game Lodge, a truly memorable experience! The extremely comfortable eco-chalets present sweeping views of 'rhenosterveld' up into the Langeberg Mountains imbuing one with an amazing sense of space and place. The chance of viewing the magnificent Eland in their natural environment as well as depicted on rock by the Bushmen/San eons ago lends this place a special magic. Fascinating was the geology, the bird life, the brightness of the Milky Way at night and the quirky goat Mildred. Thank you Len and Mandy Freeman - you have created huge possibilities for conservation and preservation!

My visit to the African Game Lodge in the Koo Valley, during mid-November 2012 was not only awe-inspiring, but also spiritual. Views surrounding the farm reflected the Karoo’s tranquility, intense heat and the majestic Langeberg Mountain range. Images of Eland; a legendary spiritual animal to the Bushmen is demonstrated on the walls of local caves that they occupied. Evidence of Bushmen, their paintings and their highly-esteemed Eland was one of the highlights for me. The wealth of bird life, resident Black Wildebeest and inquisitive Ostriches were welcoming wildlife experiences. The lodge’s unusual residents; Mildred the goat, a host of doe-eyed donkeys, the family dog and the rehabilitating injured Cheetahs, added essence to Mandy and Len’s attentive hosting skills. Thank
you for a great stay!

We enjoyed a special stay at African Game Lodge. The flowers were in full bloom and we hiked, cycled and relaxed in nature. Our cottage was well equipped with comfortable beds, a private patio and uninterrupted views across the landscape. We woke to delicious breakfasts and enjoyed interacting with Mildred the goat and the two ostriches Emma and Sadie. Len and Mandy are very warm hosts and we learned a lot from them about the plight of the cheetah and other wildlife. We were also struck by the sensitive manner in which they approach the myriad of challenges facing animal conservation. Thank you for a wonderful stay!

Dear Linda, thank you for posting a review on TripAdvisor about your stay at African Game Lodge so other potential guests visiting African Game Lodge can see more about what we have to offer. We love having guests like your family, keen to get going in the morning out cycling or walking our beautiful reserve, and just soaking up what nature has to offer, and recharge the batteries. It was wonderful to chat about our conservation philosophy and comforting to know that there are many parents out there who see the importance of involving nature and the environment in the development of their children. Hope to see you soon. Regards Len and Mandy

The weekend we spent here surpassed all expectations.
We stayed in a one bedroom cottage that is beautifully decorated - with a bedroom that makes you feel pampered. We didn't have a chance to try out the covered braai on the stoep, but had a wonderful fire inside at night.
The meals were absolutely great, and having breakfast outside - with Mildred, the goat, for company - was a highlight.
The hosts, Len and Mandy, are very special people - making you feel at home, while sharing their passion for nature. I love that the entire place is environmentally friendly.
We went for a lovely, long walk (there are various trails to take) and had the chance to really just absorb the beauty and silence around us.
You can relax on the stoep and gaze out over the amazing unspoilt scenery, go hiking or biking - and there is a lovely camp site opening.
Seeing the Cheetahs was both wonderful and sad and Mandy and Len's love for these animals is inspiring.
We really enjoyed our stay will definitely recommend this destination to all our friends. Thank you Len and Mandy for your wonderful warmth and hospitality. We will definitely return.

Thanks for posting your feedback on TripAdvisor, and also for your recognition of the things that are so important for us, that our reserve is truly environmentally-friendly, that you become aware of the true plight of cheetahs and other South African Wildlife, and most importantly that you are able to hike, get in touch with and enjoy the beautiful space that we share with our animals at African Game Lodge. Good luck with the wedding venue search... Regards Len and Mandy

Our family rented 3 cottages for 3 nights in September 2012. The setting of the African Game Lodge is remote and beautiful. The game drives we took with Len and Mandy were enriched by their extensive knowledge of the animals, fauna and flora of the area. It was quite special to have Cheetahs as your nearest neighbours. The landscape always looks breathtaking, even when viewed through the cottage windows as a spring storm raged outside! The open fire and thick blankets kept us warm and when the sun came out the next day, we were eating outside and walking the hills. Thanks to Len and Mandy for everything; we hope to return to this tranquil setting soon.

Dear Sally, thanks for posting a review on Trip Advisor. We are glad that African Game Lodge was such a wonderful experience for you to spend time enjoying the family. Particularly that it was Anna and Deon's second visit to African Game Lodge. We also enjoyed the fun time we had on the nature drive, and please tell Elih that the tadpoles in the river all have legs now! Regards Len and Mandy
