“Good priced self catering cottage”
Reviewed October 31, 2011

Four of us stayed here just one night on our way to Cape Town from PE. Shirley and Paul were very welcoming. We planned to go out for breakfast then decided at the last minute that this would take up to much time so Shriely and Paul put themselves out to provide piles of toast and bottomless pots of tea at he very last minute.

The two bed cottage is very reasonably priced, good beds, tv and heater if needed. The only minor problem was that both bedrooms had a door into the bathroom which could have been a bit embarassing, so sing when you visit the loo!!!!

Lovely little cottage, nice and social for 3-4 people. Little touches like kitchen roll, paper napkins etc make a difference to you feeling at home. Paul and Shirley are friendly and welcoming and available for advice but manage to strike the right balance of leaving you to get on with your trip. Absolute value for money, not the flashest place we stayed in our 3 weeks, but a cute place in the heart of Montagu.

Shirley and Paul welcomed us on arrival and immediately we felt at ease. This was where we wanted to stay for, sadly, a one night stop from our base with family in Capetown. Our room was very spacious, the BIGGEST DOUBLE BED I have ever slept in, a very welcome bath with masses of hot water, and we shared a complimentary aperitif with Paul and Shirley in front of a log fire before we walked over the road to a very cosy, busy Bistro for dinner. Next morning we had a sumptious breakfast with more than anyone could eat, and left , in pouring rain back to Capetown ( it was winter! ) but we promised to keep in touch and I can highly recommend Kookaroo Guest Lodge with the most charming hosts.....next trip to South Africa we will be back!!!

Room Tip: I would recommend our room with a massive bed and the bath behind screens in the room with patio doo...

We had a very nice stay at Koo Karoo! Wifi in the cottage was nice. Good beds and a heater for the cold nights.

We recently stayed here on our trip throught the Garden route. The property is clean but more basic than upscale. The same can be said about the breakfast, more country kitchen than upscale as it seems that they wish to be seen. Yes there is only a "nominal" charge for the Wifi but their website seems to suggest that it is provided although it does not say for free, but this was the only B+B in out extensive trip that charged for Wifi. Paul took exception with my comments about the Wifi charge and what I felt was an excessive amount to have laundry done. His reply was "we are running a business here". Most small B+B operators, thankfully do not exhibite this outword attitude. The property was OK, but there are better choices. We did not feel that it deserved it star rating.

I feel I must send an e mail with a short explanation to you and to say how sorry I am that you felt your stay here was not up to standard.

Upon your arrival at almost 4pm it was stated that you were looking for laundry facilities to which I offered to help as I know that unless you are staying a couple of days in the village there is no ‘quick’ option. I admit that I did not mention the amount that would be charged and that is definitely an oversight on my part for which I apologise. I did however think that you may have read the information booklet in the room at a later time which outlines the prices but again I should have directed you to this. The impression that you gave me was that you wanted the laundry completing for which I got it washed, tumble dried, and ironed before your departure after breakfast.

As for the WiFi charge of R20, this is the first time that we have had a complaint. Many guests are happy that we are ‘affordable’ accommodation and that the small fee for unlimited access is very good value. We do not try to deceive any guests about the charge and advise them accordingly when we present the password. We do not wish to mis-lead anyone and if you felt that we had done so we are genuinely sorry. We are aware of some establishments locally that ‘sell a voucher’ to guests for R55 which gives 1 hour internet usage, we feel this is too expensive as we do not want to overcharge anyone.

We endeavour to help all visitors with suggestions of places to visit and restaurants in the village which you seemed happy with, so we hope this was acceptable and helped with your stay.

We came for a winter weekend get away from City life and couldn't have been more delighted with our stay at Koo Karoo guest lodge. There is a real home away from home feel with splendid hosts who could not have been more helpful about local activities, restaurant recommendations, hiking and general info. The morning breakfasts are fantastic and incredibly filling - a real super 'English breakfast' and the bedrooms are very tastfully decorated and very quiet with very comfortable beds. I would recommend staying here for couples, families, groups of friends, buisiness trips and just about anyone else who is passing through Montagu too, we can't wait to return.

Koo Karoo Guest Lodge is a jewel. Our room was spacious, well appointed, very clean and tidy with ensuite bath and separate shower. Shirley and Paul are very cordial hosts, eager to provide knowledgeable recommendations for wine tasting, meals and things to do and see around the historic Montagu area.
