“Simply the best!”
Reviewed May 13, 2013

My wife and I spent two nights with Gerhild and her amazing team and came away with a deep desire to repeat the experience as soon as possible. Israel, the guide, managed to organise close (very close) encounters with the white lions and elephants on two separate days and in general took us to see whatever our heart desired over all 55 000 odd hectares of Sanbona Reserve. Only the cheetahs would not cooperate ....

The lodge itself is just amazing. The love and attention to detail which went into the rooms (cottages) , main house and general experience is obvious and the passion and team spirit of the staff shines through everything. The food was divine and I made my presence felt in the wine cellar .....

Room Tip: All four rooms are excellent, so no it is not necessary to reserve a specific one, but plan to stay...

We were greeted with warm towels and the attention to detail and care afforded us just carried on for the two nights we spent at the White Lion Lodge. The accommodation is really beautiful, with great attention to detail - the outdoor shower is particularly to be recommended, and the loo with a view!

The food and wine was plentiful and well prepared and served. Oh and the safari part - Israel worked tirelessly to make sure we had a fantastic experience. We were able to go out in the lLandrover twice a day, not only to see animals but also take in the local flora, with explanations of medicinal and culninary uses. We saw many animals, and even though the lions did not show themselves whilst we were there, we were more than happy with the zebra, giraffes, buffaloes, kudu, springbok, hippopotamus, elephants and many more.

I would definitely recommend White Lion Lodge to anybody who wants a high class safari experience, and would stay there again. Thanks Gerhild, Israel, Laura and all the rest of the staff who made our stay so enjoyable.

Dear Guest,
Thanks so much for the review and the compliments.

I am glad you appreciated the game drives and seeing all the animals. It is fantastic that you saw such great game, although it is unfortunate that you could not see the lions. I am also pleased that the service and food quality was of a good standard.

Thanks for the thoughts regarding the staff. We all love what we do and hope it shows.

I'm glad our lodge was such a fantastic experience and look forward to having you back again.

Warm regards from the Klein Karoo

We only stayed one night at this amazing lodge and we wished that we could have stayed forever! Gerhild and the staff are amazing and will attend to all your needs, even before asking or knowing that you have them! The lodge and the units are very luxurious with attention to details and beautiful art. The rancher, Israel, is very knowledgeable and you can tell that he loves the Karoo. We only went on 1 game drive as we loved our unit and the swimming pool too much but if one loves the Karoo with its diversity of plants, bossies and birds, then the afternoon drive is a must. By chance, we also happened to encounter a hippo which is, of course a rarity in the Karoo! Anyway, the stay was memorable and we will be back!

Great experience and within driving distance of Cape Town. Gerhild, Libby, and Israel took great care of us. The lodge was superb and the food great. The scenery is beautiful as is all of South Africa. Regarding the game it was a question of quality rather than quantity: we saw the white lions in the wild on two days- one time on a kill- some cheetahs at very close range as well as elephant, rhino, buffalo, giraffe, eland amongst others ( and apparently a vine snake). As per usual in South Africa the guide, Israel, was very good and went to great lengths to show us as much as possible- we now know that baboons always stay close to kudu. Really hope this place continues to grow and good luck for the future. Peter and Sonja Roberts

We stayed at White Lion Lodge for three nights and it proved to be the undoubted highlight of our holiday.
The accommodation was superb - the unit had everything we could ask for. The swimming pool was a short (50 feet) way from the front door. All the furniture, the fittings etc throughout the lodge were of the highest quality.
Two highlights stand out. Firstly, the game drives led by Israel. His knowledge was second to none and during the four drives we saw almost everything. He was able to show us not only the wonderful animals but the different plants and their medicinal or other use, he showed us the different rock formations, the fossils and told us about the history of Sanbona. In total we spent about 20 hours out and about during our stay. Secondly, Gerry and her staff were so friendly - the chef Libby prepared wonderful food (her cinnamon waffles were to die for!!!!), Laura kept us amused with her experiences. It is difficult to single anybody out as they were all great.
White Lion Lodge is tremendous value and we would recommend it to anybody.

Room Tip: All four units are superb.

I love nature and I love animals. I love good wine and good food. I love being pampered. I love treating people like friends and I love it more when they do it to me...loving this too ? Then please don't hesitate and go spend AT LEAST 2 nights in the White Lion Lodge in Sanbona ! All of this and more is what will come to you, no need to manage your expectations this time.
Sanbona is a wild life reserve the size of Singapore and the name refers to the Khoi-San indigenous people and also means "good", the guide (his name is Israel) to take you out on the most beautiful botanical and game drives is Khoi-San and will shower you with a wealth of information. The rooms are spacious and beautiful. The service is excellent. The food and wine is tailored to your taste buds. The views are gorgeous. I wished I could stay forever...

Room Tip: All rooms are equally amazing

Just spent a day and a night at this lodge with my wife and our 5 year-old son.The 3 hour scenic drive to get there from Camps Bay was an experience itself. We wish we could have visited some of the beautiful villages we passed through (Worcester,Robertson, Ashton, Montagu) but there was no time as we had to get there by 1pm for our lunch. The lodge was defintely exclusive and perched on a hill in Southern Sanbona with a handful of beautiful detached rooms exotically decorated in African safari style. The balcony is huge with panoramic view of another hill and the bathroom is fantastic, equipped with indoor and outdoor showers and a huge bathtub. There was a small communal pool with beautiful view. The meals were all cooked to the taste and requirement of the guests and the best was the ostrich steak. The ingredients and drinks were all fresh from local farms and vineyards. There were two game drives and the first one was in Southern sanbona mainly on flora. Our guide was one cool vegetarian named "Mr Israel", who was the driver, guide, ranger, botanist, and traditional medicine man all rolled into one, and he learnt his trade not by reading a book or going to university, but by growing up and surviving in that environment. For a non-botanic person like him, Israel make the trip sufficiently interesting particularly on the medicinal values of the plants. The second drive started at 530am and was on games in Northern Sanbona. As some previous reviewers have mentioned, there were no wall to wall games here like one gets in kruger or Mara, but we did manage to see rhinos, antelopes, zebras, giraffes and the the all important white lions. It was our little one's first safari experience and although he could not see all the animals as some were far away, he enjoyed the bumpy ride and his small binocular provided by Israel.

The trip was short but no doubt the most exotic and exclusive part of our Western Cape holiday. The service and hospitality of Gerry the boss, her niece and other staff were great. The other guests at the same time were a German couple whose company and humour over the meals and game drives we thoroughly enjoyed and that was a huge bonus for our stay.

I would recommend the lodge to family and honeymooners but not those who only want to see lots of animals.
