Decor aside, the hotel is pleasant; old and clean. The food is wholesome. Staff are friendly and helpful. There are 2 pools and pretty, overgrown flower gardens which are lovely to relax in. We stayed in the Victorian house annex and our rooms were enormous, although the beds were a little soft and the walls quite thin so our sleep wasn't too good. However as we only stayed 2 nights and could sleep in late, this didn't really matter. Other rooms we saw seemed more modern and quieter, but smaller.

The hotel decor treads a fine line between Art Deco and tacky. Ideally, it will get onto a interior-design reality TV show where some gifted designer will magically co-ordinate its Deco bits and bobs into a proper scheme and banish some of its creepier features such as an old shop-manequin in the bar and our porn-star bathrooms with their black tiles and mirrored walls.

The hotel is apparently 'pet-friendly' which is great for those travelling with pets but one of our friends took offense at a dogs in the dining-room.

I travelled the world to China, Brasil, the US and a lot more countries, but I never saw such a wonderful and peaceful place like the Montagu Country Hotel in the little Karoo. The hotel staff was friendly, very charming. Margret from Germany with son Uli.

I have a very well traveled dog...in fact he's the most traveled dog on the planet. he's been everywhere! (All to promote dog adoption). We recently traveled across the country for the same purpose, and were lucky (and blessed) to stay at the Montague Country Hotel. The staff were so friendly, the rooms were clean and nicely laid out- and the beautifully manicured garden outside brought peace to my chaotic schedule - while my dog 'Oscar' really found the time to smell the roses at this wonderful spot. The Team at the hotel kindly sponsored our stay die to the nature of our national tour- so when you stay here, you aren't just staying at the best place in Montague- but you're also supporting genuine people who support worthy projects in this world... we will be back, paw sure!

Stayed: October 2010, traveled on business
