We unfortunately got to a late start for the crossing due to bad weather around when the cyclone was coming through. We decided to do the hike anyways (even though we were starting around 11am) and we checked our bags at the motel.

We hiked to the red crater and that's when the weather got crappy at the top. We couldn't see anything anymore after a while and everyone that was coming from the other direction said you couldn't even see the emerald pools or anything, so we decided that we'd end our hike there and turn back. :(

Overall we hiked about 6 hours and thought it was still worth it even if we couldn't get to the pools.

**Ps. The weather on the bottom/beginning of the hike is TOTALLY different then the weather on the top. So be prepared! We were sweating at the bottom and then at the top, freezing!

The actual room was very nice. Reminded me of a nice cabin. Plenty of space. Decent bathroom. The breakfast that was included was good. Full hot breakfast. The owners son (who is now taking over) was extremely nice and even helped with making the breakfast. No complaints. We were tired from the hike, so this is just what we needed.

We only had time for one afternoon/night/morning in Tongariro, and opted to stay here based on TripAdvisor reviews. Unfortunately, the fog/clouds were so bad that we didn't get to see any of the mountains, or do the Taranaki Falls track in the morning as originally planned. The room was nice, with wood-plank vaulted ceilings. Unfortunately, the radiator on that chilly and damp night simply could not keep up with the low temperatures (or, as we suspected, the heat was rising into the vaulted ceiling). This led to a very cold night. We did the bed & breaky option, and the breakfast provided in the morning was a good value, and would have fueled us well for the ill-fated Taranaki Falls trek :)

Hosts were very knowledgeable to help us plan the crossing. Gave us good advice on how to do the hike and with the bus ride to and from the trail. Delicious food for dinner when we returned and breakfast. Our room was basic,as described but nice with good shower, small frig and microwave. They have a hot tub for sore muscles after the hike. As noted by another writer- there is a nice pub within walking distance too. An equipment rental place is nearby too and I was glad I rented hiking boots and waterproof pants for the rainy weather. We were very happy with our stay at Adventure lodge!

We originally planned on staying at the Chateau Tongariro hotel, but it was fully booked because of the Easter holiday. We found this gem of a Lodge on Trip Advisor and we are so happy with our stay!
Thank you Lorraine and Jason for an amazing stay at your lodge and the adventure of a lifetime. We did their Tongariro Alpine Crossing package and got a lot of water and a filling lunch bag for our trip and heaps of information. They are very knowledgeable about the hike and the surrounding areas. The room was spacious and clean. Really good hot water!
However, what really makes this gem really shine is Lorraine, her husband, and son Jason who run the Lodge. They are all wonderful charming and warm people who really care about their guests. They advised us the dangers of the crossing and made sure we checked in with them after our hike. My wife and I did not make it across the trek unfortunately due to fierce gale force winds (I would not advise hiking in those conditions) which stopped us near the top and buckets of rain near the bottom - however, it was such an amazing trek nonetheless. An added benefit of being a more intimate lodge/motel was we made great friends with another couple who stayed at the lodge and attempted the hike with us. Highly recommend this lodge!

Lorraine and her team give excellent service for people wanting to do the Tongariro crossing or the northern circuit. They juggled things to accommodate us for extra nights stay when the weather wasn't conducive to tramping and suggested other activities to do around the area to keep us occupied. We stayed in the motel room and one night in the lodge due to our extended stay. Everything was clean and the spa pool was great. It's a shame you couldn't access the guest kitchen from the lodge without going outside but they tell me they're working on rectifying that. The shuttle service was great too. I would recommend.

Room Tip: You can hear people in the next motel room talking so have to be conscious of that if getting up ear...

The Adventure Lodge is a great place to stay when exploring Tongariro National Park. It is close to the visitor center, the chateau and all three mountains in the park. The room was nice and clean with a kitchenette. A full breakfast was also included in our rate. The owners had all sorts of information to share about locations used in the Lord of the Rings movies. Very interesting.

We had to try this spot again to make sure it was as good as we'd thought a year ago... and it was. Run by great people, it was all we needed in a national park setting. Room was quiet, clean and very comfortable, with a microwave and basic kitchen and a fantastic shower, complete with large towels. Heating was immediate and adjustable, good news in cold weather.
Cooked breakfast was included in the modest fee, and there was a large kitchen and barbecue had we wanted to cook our own meals. A perfect place to stay for a mountain experience.
