“Clean and comfortable but not happy with service”
Reviewed April 4, 2014

Accommodation was superb. Clean and comfortable. Location is very convenient if you want to do the tongariro crossing and there's a great pub just down the road. The only let down was the male reception staff who seemed to make a lot of side comments which were quite rude and tactless.

It’s not just the Tongariro Alpine Crossing that’s available here, but if that’s what you want to do, the Adventure Lodge and Motel will take care of you. We stayed at the motel for four nights on our holiday in North Island. This establishment is managed to perfection: extraordinary (friendly) efficiency at getting folk through the Crossing safely and fuss-free, whilst dealing with all the other issues of their guests.

Our chalet was clean, well appointed and maintained. It had a very comfortable double-bed room with another single bed in the sitting area. An ensuite bathroom with a fantastic shower – but remember to lock the sliding door each time you go to the loo: it had a life of its own, and can bring you in to full view of the outside world!

Full breakfast was served in an adjacent building, but also had continental breaky if you couldn’t face the generous proportions of the full fry-up.

The owners (who are also the hosts) are extraordinarily knowledgeable about the weather in the national park: we were given perfect advice for each of our three days walking; where to go to get the best of the weather and a good walk.

When we checked in I was asked which part of Wales I came from? Wales?? I’m a Geordie! I, of course, forgave him. He was, after all, an Aussie;-)

I would recommend this motel without hesitation. Especially the Tongariro Alpine Crossing Package: with which they provide an excellent service.

We ventured down from Auckland for the weekend of the 14 and 15 February being the first available weekend where we could get a room given it is peak season for the Tongiriro Crossing. We were able to make all enquiries over email which made things easier with work and Lorraine was very responsive.

If you want an effortless weekend this is the way to go - two nights accomodation, breakfasts, packed lunch for the walk and a dinner as well as shuttle pick ups two and from Tongiriro all included.

We were three friends in one of the family units (a double bed as you walk in and two single beds in a separate room). The unit was tidy, beds comfortable and shower pressure good. There was also a kitchenette so we were able to make a cup of tea and also grab a bottle of wine from the dining area to drink in our room after the long walk on Saturday.

We do recommend you organise check in in advance if you are going down on a Friday. We were held up in Auckland and only arrived at the lodge after 11pm and had we not called the office would have been shut. Luckily we had rang ahead so we knew what room we were in and also what time we had to be ready for the walk the next day (including breakfast time and whether we wanted chicken or ham sandwiches for lunch).

On Saturday morning we were ready to go. Our cooked breakfast was provided on arrival to the dining room and a run down of the walk provided as we ate. We picked up our packed lunches and were rounded up into the shuttle. The driver took a photo of our group of three and away we went. We were provided three afternoon pick up times so we knew where we had to be and when but all times allowed for a leisurely walk (we grabbed the 4.30pm shuttle back). On return we were offerred two dinner seatings - we grabbed the earlier one and enjoyed our MASSIVE steak with a glass of red wine. Lorraine also presented us with our completion of the walk certificate and a t shirt. Couldn't argue with that treatment. We then booked a slot for the spa pool. Great way to end the day!

It really was an easy weekend as everything was organised for us which meant we only had to get through the walk. As a result we felt it was value for money as a result.

As long as you aren't expecting a really flash place there will be little room for bad ratings - the staff are knowledgeable and clearly passionate about what they do and it really is a homely environment.

Room Tip: We had the room next to the spa room - no complaints.

We only stayed two nights and had one full day hiking. The motel caters to hikers and the owners seem to know all about what is available to do. We would probably enjoyed our stay more if the weather had been nicer. This has to be one of the windiest places in NZ. We had a lot of issues getting the wifi working. We had a kitchenette and I thought it could have been better stocked. They also don't want you to actually cook in the rooms due to odors put there is a communal kitchen provided. Be aware that National Park village is very small with limited services. There is one small grocery store where you can get basics. The best restaurant in town is at the railway station. They do an excellent Sunday roast dinner.

You can't go wrong booking their tongariro package. The motel is located in the national park, they drive and pick up from the tongariro crossing, they organize food for you while you are there. All you have to do is turn up with your gear!
The room was spacious and clean. The family owned business is run very well and they will really look after you. If by chance mother nature is not cooperating, they won't charge you for the full amount.
You also get a bonus t-shirt as proof you've done the crossing! :)

The knowledge and helpfulness of the staff was very encouraging,we had booked to do the crossing but the weather forecast was not good so we did the lower and upper Tama Lakes, which was a wonderful walk and the weather was fine until you got up to the upper lake where the wind was very strong, apparently nothing like the wind on the Crossing, so we were pleased that we did not try it. However,we still had the delicious meal with great company and many climbing stories.Sad not to have got the T Shirt, maybe next time.

This small motel was a perfect base for exploring the National Park. The owner was really helpful with a good local knowledge. There is also the added benefit of use of the spa at the end of a hard day's walking.
