I was travelling in New Zealand without a car and I decided to take the train to National Park and do the Tongariro Crossing. I loved the train ride from Auckland (comfortable, informative, relaxing) and then Adventure Lodge looked after the rest. I can't imagine slogging up and down that trail, then driving somewhere and cooking supper. The lodge shuttle was waiting for us at 4 pm. I bought a cold beer as soon as we got back to the lodge, had a shower, then a jacuzzi and let Ron look after dinner. And it was a great dinner (steak, salad bar and lemon cheesecake) shared with all the other lodge guests who did the crossing that day. Extremely good value
Only one complaint - I was expecting to leave the lodge at 7:30 and be on the trail by 8:00. We didn't leave until 8:30 because we were waiting for some commuters to arrive. I think you want to be on the trail as early as possible because there is no shade and 6-7 hours in the sun and ultraviolet is very depleting.

Booked 2 nights in the motel accommodation but stayed 3 due to the weather. The freedom package is super value to do the Tongariro mountain crossing. Accommodation first class as is the organisation and food. Lorraine and Ron made us very welcome and their local knowledge made our stay. The jacuzzi was very welcome after our walk. We went as far as is open on the Tongariro crossing and hope to return to complete it one day.

We had a great walk, blessed by fantastic weather with clear blue skies. The organisation by Lorraine was professionally done, with spacious clean room, wholesome meals, free T shirt, and transport to and from the Crossing start. We ate our packed lunch, made by Ron, on top of Mount Tongiriro, and it will go down as one of the best sandwiches we've ever had ! Afterwards we had a welcome soak in the Jacuzzi, and generally felt on top of the world. Would definitely recommend the Tonariro Freedom package.

Room Tip: We had one of the Superior units

We stayed here and had the 2 night freedom package.. it has to be the best value for money we have ever had on any holiday and we have travelled extensively within New Zealand and overseas. The food was excellent, rooms comfortable and hosts obliging. The weather was fantastic and the hike just wonderful. We went to the summit of Tongariro and back and although we were unable to go right across as it is still closed beyond the lakes, we felt we did not miss out on anything. Ron cooked the moistest chicken breast we have ever had. Nothing to do with the accommodation but we did have a meal at the pub on the corner.. was good food but beware the "house" wine which consisted of the vinegary dregs of one bottle and then topped up with a new bottle of a different variety..!!

We are very grateful to Ron and Lorraine for their excellent hospitality during our two night stay at Adventure Motel.
We booked the Freedom Crossing Package (2 night accomm, 2x breakfasts, lunch, dinner and Crossing transport) and were very disappointed when we learned that due to the volcanic activity we would be unable to attempt the hike.
Lorraine, however, is a wonderful ambassador for the National Park and suggested another full day hike to the Crater Lakes which was still challenging with breathtaking views.
Our room was modern and clean, and we certainly appreciated the hot spa before dinner. We enjoyed tasty breakfasts both mornings and it was great to be able to chat to other couples who were also hiking in the area. The packed lunch was tasty and energising and best enjoyed with the view at the top of the hike.
We were even given advice on our departure for the most scenic route to our next destination and things to do when we got there.
I would not hesitate to recommend Adventure Lodge & Motel to anyone looking to visit Tongariro NP and we will certainly be back to make another attempt at the Crossing!

There is little reason to stay at National Park apart from proximity to the start of the Tongariro Crossing. But if you do have to, this is a good place to stay. Not cheap (nothing is in the area), basic but gradually being renovated and very clean and quiet, with a particularly comfortable bed and excellent bedding - and a flat screen TV! Make sure you bring food - there is nothing available to speak of, but the Lodge does do meals ( you need to pre-book).

Room Tip: All pretty much the same!

We arrived after a day driving and on checking in the owner, Lorraine, said "get back in your car NOW and drive up Mount Ruapehu because it won't be there in the morning!". She was absolutely right. The next day it was raining cats and dogs and we couldn't see 100 metres yet alone the volcano we had come to see. So top marks. If she hadn't have bullied us (in the nicest possible way) we would have missed what we had come to see.

We actually did get straight back in the car and enjoyed the experience.

As a keen birdwatcher I was keen to see the very rare (fewer than 100 in the world) Blue Duck which is found in this area. Lorraine phoned up the local "Birdy" person and gave me very exact instructions where I might find one. Hey, this is someone who knows the meaning of looking after her guest. She cares.

Our room was a good size (we decided to sort out all four suitcases and had room to spare). It was comfortable and the linen was good quality. The kitchen facilities are good and there is a real table and chairs - not eating on your lap like some motels. The separate laundrette was useful. Everything was scrupulously clean.

We were only here one night, but can thoroughly recommend it.
